THE LYMAN FISH PAGE

Listed below are all known children of Lyman Fish.
He was married at least twice, to Adeline Ellis or Ely (m. Dec 8, 1827 per family records) and to Hannah King.
The first three children are Adeline's. Adeline, per family history, was born 12/12/1806 in VT and died abt. 1840
Lyman re-married 01/04/1840 in NY Hannah King (b. 1/15/1814 - d. 5/15/1890)
(37 days after Adeline's death).

Since primary documentation has not been found, the actual dates for Lyman's birth, marriages and Adline's death are based on family records only.

Current Research:

A Williamine Wood has been discovered on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 census in Potsdam, St. Lawrence Co., NY, married to Elbert Wood, and having children Emma, Ella, Clayton Lucius, and Nelson W. The age on census reports matches the age of Lyman's daughter Williamine. A local directory places Elbert Wood in the town of Crary's Mills. Williamine and Elbert are buried in Beech Plains cemetery. Williamine's death certificate confirms that her maiden name was Fish, but lists her father's name as William Fish, not Lyman. Sons Clayton and Nelson both show up in St. Lawrence County in 1900, but I have not been able to locate them on later census reports. Daughter Emma married George P. Traver and moved to Brooklyn. Daughter Ella (Minnie) married William W. Santway and moved to Russell. Williamine (Fish) Wood died at the home of her daughter Minnie Santway.

William C. Fish and Betsy (Freeman) Fish are both buried in the Sylvan Cemetery, Richland Co., WI. Based upon civil war widow's pension records, it looks like William's second wife, Harriet Matthews, remarried a man named (William or Avery) Burdick and moved St. Lawrence Co., NY. She was left a widow of Mr. Burdick and was left destitute. Her nephew had a very hard time gaining a pittance of money for her support from her widow's pension. She died 5 Apr 1939 and is buried in Beech (aka Beach) Plains cemetery in St. Lawrence Co., NY.

Seymour married Anna Twing, daughter of William Twing, and sister of Verone Fish's wife Martha Twing. Their marriage certificate lists her last name as Turane, but her recently found death certificate confirms that her maiden name was Twing, and that her parents were W.A. Twing and Lucy Clark. Seymour and Anna had children Carl, Elmer and Freda. Carl had children Theron and Evelyn, but the trail gets cold at that point. Seymour is buried in Yankeetown Cemetery in Crawford Co., WI with his first wife Charlotte Talcott. Anna is buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Beloit, WI.

Lafayette is the current mystery. Marriage certificates have been found in Crawford Co., WI for Lafayette's marriages to Josephine Bowmont (Beaumont) on 3 Mar 1881, and to Matilda Fetteplace (Phetteplace) on 19 Oct 1884. An article in the 2 Nov 1882 Republican Observer states that Josephine Fish was granted a divorce from Lafayette Fish. No additional records of Matilda has been found.

The obituary of Lafayette's mother, Hannah, places Lafayette in Texas in 1890. Lafayette shows up on the 1900 U.S. Census in Tarrant Co., Texas with wife Rose, and son Ben Lee Fish. The 1910 U.S. Census shows Lafayette, married, with children Bennie Lee, Alvin and Gladys, but Rose is not with him.

Tarrant Co., Texas records shows that L.M. Fish and Delia Gilley applied for a marriage license on 4 Sep 1896, but the license was not returned to be recorded, so it's not certain if they actually married. L.M. Fish then married Rose Harlan on 28 Feb 1897. Lafayette M. Fish shows up in the 1894 Ft. Wayne directory as a wood dealer. and again in the 1899, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904 & 1905 directories as either a wood or ice dealer. In 1911, there is an entry for Lee M. Fish, ice dealer. No trace of him has been found after 1914. Thanks to Dave Taft for researching the Tarrant Co., Texas information.

New Information on Lafayette's sons!

Bennie Lee Fish appears on the 1920 census in Tarrant Co., Texas, age 21, with wife Mabel, age 22. He works as a clerk, and there are no children listed. There is also a registration card showing that Bennie Lee Fish registered for WWI, was born May 20, 1895, was self-employed with an ice-wagon, and nearest relative was Mabel Fish. They lived on Route 7, Ft. Worth, Texas. Bennie was of medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. Bennie is buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Tarrant Co., TX

Alvin Fish was born 1 Nov, 1900 in Texas, and died December 1967 in Emporia, Lyon, Kansas. His social security card was issued in Oklahoma. He appears on the 1930 US census in Beaumont City, Jefferson Co., Texas, with wife Jarene and daughter Mary Ann, 1.5 years old. Alvin's obituary, provided by the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia says:

"Funeral services for Alvin H. Fish, 1803 West Sixth Ave., who died Sunday, were held Wednesday afternoon in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett chapel, conducted by Rev. Neal Brillhart, pastor of the West Side Baptist Church. Assisting with the service were representatives of the Topeka Consistory, Hugh Nichols, Master, Robert D. Brown, Prelate, Scott E. Kelsey, Preceptor, and Scott W. Kelsey, Prior. Mrs. William Goldsmith sang, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Plummer. Pallbearers were Harvey Rush, Glenn Palmer, Frank Mathena, M.B. Miller, E.B. Moyer and Floyd J. Shomber. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Relatives attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Roger H. Downing, Bellefonte, Pa, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Emminger, Indianapolis, Ind. Fay Singleton and Phoebe Gross, Kansas City, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. William Gross, Shawnee Mission and Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Adams Jr., Topeka." There is a note that the song sang was "In the Sweet Bye & Bye"
