Background

Congrès Mondial Acadien - Louisiane 1999 will be the second worldwide reunion of people of Acadian descent. These are the descendents of the first settlers of the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. In the middle of the 18th century, their ancestors were separated from their families, forced to watch as their homes were burned, and deported to locations where they withstood years of suffering. While Acadian descendents eventually settled all over the world, the largest concentration outside of Acadia settled on the bayous and prairies of south Lousiaina. These are the people, proud of their history, their language, and their culture, who are preparing to welcome their Acadian cousins from around the world. These are the Cajuns of Louisiana.

Congrès Mondial Acadien - Louisiane 1999

The first worldwide reunion of Acadian people was held in 1994 for two weeks throughout nine municipalities of New Brunswick, Canada. An estimated 250,000 people participated. The celebration was marked by conferences, genealogy workshops, cultural exhibits, music, theater, and most important of all family reunions. Most important because the family reunions were the events most enjoyed by the people who attended. When the Congrès Mondial Acadien organization agreed to allow Louisiana to host the second Congrès Mondial Acadien, Louisiana organizers decided to make family reunions the focus of the 1999 event. There will be one sanctioned reunion for each Acadian family that was present in Acadia at the time of the exile during the two week festival.
