Newark, NJ

According to a NJ Transit engineer, and FOT adopter, January 1998 saw a number of discarded, dead pit bull terriers along the railroad tracks in the Roseville section of Newark. They are being tossed off the bridges on 3rd through 7th Streets, presumably the losers of dogfights. They are described as typically small `pits', usually with collars. Some were disposed of in green garbage bags.

Paris, France

Paris had banned pit bull terriers and other breeds deemed attack dogs from public housing in July,1997. Residents were given just a few days to get rid of their dogs or face eviction. As of May, 1998, all pit bull terriers are banned from the entire country. France joins Holland and Great Britain in this breed ban.

Mount Laurel, NJ

In late summer, the loser of an apparently forced dogfight was found dumped in a trash can on the New Jersey Turnpike. At the James Fenimore Cooper service area at Exit 4, people reported animal noises coming from one of the trash barrels, and called animal control. The ACO found a bloodied, battered pit bull terrier, about one year old, who had suffered bite wounds to the face and hindquarters. The dog was being treated at an area animal hospital where he was named Rusty. He received antibiotics and cage rest; his wounds did not require suturing.

Authorities report that dogfighting is on the rise in that area, with three men having been charged in Pemberton just a few weeks earlier.

Trenton, NJ

An 8 week old American Pit Bull Terrier puppy, slashed over 30 times, was found on Friday, Feb.6, 1998 by Trenton ACO's. A concerned citizen called in to report the dazed puppy wandering about Laurel Ave. The 30 slashes on the back, tail and stomach seemed to have been done by a razor blade. The puppy survived the attack and was expected to recover nicely in the hands of Animal Allies, a Trenton based organization who helps stray and abused animals.
