Brawner's of Franklin County, Georgia

Jesse Brawner, Sr. and wife, Sarah, moved to Franklin County from Elbert County about 1800 and settled on a farm on Nails Creek adjoining the farms of Richard Bellamy, John Bellamy, and the Jones family.

1. Jesse Brawner Sr. d. Mar. 1836; he m. Sarah Goolsby (?) b. 1775, d. Nov. 1853. Their children were:

2-1 John Brawner m. Patsea Bellamy b. 1800, dau. of John and Lucy Goolsby Bellamy. Their children:

3-1 Jefferson H. Brawner 1st m. Arminda Wiley, Dec. 24, 1844. Their children were:

4-2 John m. Mary Poole,

4-3 Mary m. J.C. McConnell (see Thomas McConnell family),

4-4 Bud,

4-5 Theodocia m. William C. Vandiver,

4-6 Henrietta m. Sloan Looney,

4-7 Harriet m. Eli T. Wilmot,

4-8 a daughter "Bill" m. Alf Dobbs.

3-1 Jefferson H. Brawner 2nd m. Nattie Mabry, Oct. 21, 1870 and moved to Texas.

3-2 Asa W. Brawner Ist m. Harriett Wiley. Dr. Asa W. Brawner was an ordained Baptist minister, an M.D. who was assigned by the Confederate Army to remain on duty in Franklin County to care for the aged and the wounded soldiers, the representative from Franklin County in Georgia General Assembly during the Civil War, postmaster of Walnut Hill, Georgia, and clerk of the Tugalo Baptist Association for many years. Known children of Asa W. and Harriett W. Brawner:

3-2 Dr. Asa W. Brawner 2nd m. Nattie Durrough, Mar. 8, 1870 and had

4-4 Leila m. Jim Skelton, and

4-5 a dau.

In the mid 1870's Dr. Brawner and all children moved to Texas.

3-3 Malissa Harriett Brawner m. Milton W. Gillespie, Jan. 9, 1838 (see Gillespie family).

2-3 Nancy m. Sterling Vaughn;

2-4 Mary E. m. G.W. Epperson;

2-5 Sarah G. m. Saulbury "Bing" Garrison;

2-6 Charlotte m. Leonard Shannon;

2-7 Elizabeth M. m. Samuel Mangrum;

2-8 Jesse, Jr. m. Sarah Coffee;

2-9.Susannah, daughter of Jesse, Sr. and Sarah Brawner, m. John Westbrook. Their descendants included two grandsons who were physicians in the Ila, Georgia, area. One Dr. George Westbrook married the sister of Dr. B.T. Smith and Dr. Robert Westbrook married the sister of Dr. Hall of Carnesville.

2-10 Washington Marion Brawner b. Mar. 11, 1811, d. May 1, 1891, m. Oct. 13, 1836 to Nancy Towns b. Nov. 10, 1816, d. Apr. 9, 1892. She was the dau. of John Towns and Elizabeth Spears and granddaughter of William Spears, Rev. Sold. The children of William[sic. probably Washington] and Nancy T. Brawner:

3-2 William F., killed in Civil War, never married.

3-3 Jesse Columbus (Lum), killed in Civil War, never married.

3-4 Elizabeth, never married.

3-5 Clementine, never married.

3-6 James W. Brawner b. June 27, 1848, d. July 19, 1915, m. Sarah Eudora Ballenger. Their children:

4-2 Tom m. Ila Dove,

4-3 John m. Callie Watson,

4-4 Lula m. Reppard Cole,

4-5 Lester m. _ Rice,

4-6 Hubert never married,

4-7 Hattie never married,

4-9 Herman m. Roberts,

4-10 Clarence m. Whitfield,

4-11 Grace m. Lam Bellamy.

3-7 Mary Eliza (Molly) Brawner b. Jan. 10, 1851, d. June 6, 1922, dau. ot W.M. and Nancy Brawner, m. Sept. 17, 1879 John Tillinghast Stevenson, son of Amaziah Francis Stevenson and Mary Ann Baker (see Stevenson family).

3-8 Thomas Brawner lived at Bay City, Texas, never married.

3-9 Harriett Brawner b. May 19, 1859, d. Jan. 21, 1924, dau. of W.M. and Nancy Brawner, m. Levi H. Bellamy (see Bellamy family).

3-10 Asa Washington Brawner b. 1856, d. 1936, son of W.M. and Nancy Brawner, m. Nillah Smith. Their children:

4-1 Pearl m. ______Gillespie,

4-2 Ola m. Thomas Ragsdale and lived at Homer, Ga.,

4-3 May m. a physician and lived in Florida,

4-4 Daisy Lee m. Lee Sullivan and lived in Homer, Ga.,

4-5 Addie m. Thomas and lived in Idaho and North Carolina,

4-6 a son who went to California when young.
