例年11/25日だったか、Thanksgiving,感謝祭が過ぎると町はクリスマスの準備だ。 家の外の飾り付け、クリスマスツリーの準備、店はクリスマスセールと 一年のうち一番盛り上がる季節である。車にも赤いリボンを結んだり、リースを 付けたりする人もいる。
クリスマスまであと1,2週間となると店の営業時間がやたら長くなる。 Macy's など一流のデパート、 Toys R Us などのおもちゃ店など夜の11,12時まで営業するのだ。 これにはたまげる。アメリカ人は働きばちではないと思っていたが、 この季節は皆頑張っている。また、25日がすぎると26日からいきなりアフタークリスマスセールだ。 特にクリスマスの飾り付けの備品などはいきなり50%引きになり、来年のために買うという 話も聞く。また、こちらの消費者保護の為か、購入した品物はほとんどの場合返品、返金 が可能である。例えばクリスマスパーティーのためにドレスを購入して、クリスマスが終わると 返し、返金してもらうといった芸当をする人もいるとか。
さて今回紹介したいのはクリスマス時期の家の飾り付けである。例年この季節になると 新聞にどこどこにお住まいのxxさん家の飾り付けがはすばらしいなどの特集記事がある。 今年はこの中からいくつか写真付きで紹介する。
ここはVonderwerth家。屋根の電飾はもちろんだが庭, ガレージの飾り付けがすごい。ガレージの中にも 人形がいっぱいだ。手前に見えるのは鹿の形をしたはりがねに 電球が巻いてある。以下の新聞によれば屋根の電球は4000個を超え、 10/31以後から準備を始めた。総額200-300万円は使って いる。見に来たら食料の寄付を御願いしたいとの事。

Vonderwerth: Five minutes into a conversation,
he's raving about the country's largest Christmas
store in some town in Michigan.
``I just started putting out lights, and it just grew and grew and grew,'' he says.
Indeed. So much so that Bob and Jenny Vonderwerth have landed our much-coveted best of show award.
That glow you see as you drive down Blossom Hill Road in South San Jose just might be coming from the Vonderwerth place. More than 40,000 white lights surround the roof, and icicle lights hang from the eaves. Bob Vonderwerth started decorating the day after Halloween.
He picks up items around the country for his big production. One of this year's many additions is a lighted musical wreath with an animated figure. Bob Vonderwerth is into his display for $20,000 to $30,000, he figures.
``I'm competing with San Jose's Christmas in the Park,'' he says.
Our scouts called his garage a winter wonderland, with flying snowmen, bears and elves playing in the snow and a huge Santa that set Vonderwerth back $3,000. Also on site are a Christmas train, a pair of five-foot toy soldiers, an arch of garlands, white lights and poinsettias and Disney characters. Really, this is a theme park waiting to happen.
The Vonderwerths ask visitors to stop by between 6 and 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Fridays and Saturdays, Santa hangs around, passing out little toys donated by fast food restaurants.
In return, the Vonderwerths hope those who stop by will bring toys for the Toys for Tots drive or non-perishable food items for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

stop here. Wood cutouts of Santa and spouse,
elves, reindeer and snowmen stand in harmony with
Beauty and the Beast, Winnie the Pooh and
gingerbread men. A moving Santa in an elaborate
workshop, a carousel, a balloon carrying bears
and dolls and penguins ice-skating would be
enough to complete the picture, but don't forget
the Nativity scene and a train carrying presents.
Whew. Nominator Kimberly Hill called this
extravaganza ``the best single-house display I've
seen.''
フラッシュが弱くてちょっと暗そうだが本当はもっと明るい。 このOrnellas家は毎年9月から飾り付けの準備をする。今年は全部で58000個の 電球を用意したらしい。数ではこの家が一番である。 古くなった電飾求むの看板があった。飾り付けの半分程度が寄付の電飾で まかなわれているらしい。電気代はこの家持ちのはずだ。

Ornellas began setting up his 58,000 lights back
in September, and he's invested 156 hours in this
masterpiece. The animal topiaries strung with
lights are back, but it's the 40-foot-tall peak
of lights running from the roof to the front yard
that stuns. Santa passes out candy canes on
occasion at this Willow Glen sideshow.
