Hey you future-hamster owners! This page is for you, helping you
to decide if a hamster is right for you. I got 10 points that will help
you decide and you should think them through.

Here are 10 points to help you decide.

  • A hamster needs a suitable place where it can sleep undisturbed during the day but where it can be noisy in the evening and at night.

  • It would like a clean cage and fresh food every day. This takes a bit of work as well as time, which you may be short of.

  • A hamster doesn't want to be petted constantly; on the other hand, it will only become tame if you spend some time with it every day.

  • The animal needs absolute quiet during its sleeping period. Only if this condition is met will it live to its full age of two to four years.

  • If you go away for vacations, you have to make arrangements for the hamster to be taken care of.

  • Hamsters like to move around and should be let out of their cage to run free in a closed room with you watching or let it into it's own plastic ball to roam around your house.

  • A hamster may gnaw on wallpaper, floor boards, or clothes while running free.

  • The animal should have as large a cage as possible to give it plenty of freedom of movement.

  • If you already have pets you should ask yourself if a hamster will be safe.

  • Before you buy a hamster, make sure that nobody in the house hold is allergic to animal hair.

All of the above information is from "Hamsters" by Otto von Frisch.

I hope this page helped you decide whether or not a hamster is right for you.
