Meet the President

Statement from Cynthia Moose, 03/1997

Not that long ago, Meower Power^tm was a vision of the future for me, a dream of hope for the welfare and safety of the homeless and feral cats in our communities with an avenue of fellowship and teamwork for the caretakers and lone feeders of these unique and remarkable creatures. I knew if I kept fighting for this cause and pressing onward, eventually something had to happen. Now, thanks to our members, friends, and hard working volunteers, I see my dreams slowly materializing before my eyes.

As an organization, we are beginning to grow and become stronger,
learning how to gather our resources and combine our ideas and talents, finding better ways to educate and serve our communities, to protect and provide for the animals we love and those who care for them. For close to two years now we have been serving the greater Hampton Roads communities, establishing the Meower Power^tm trademark; and our 1st year anniversary of having our non-profit, incorporated status will soon be upon us as well as the election of new officers. I feel as a group we have made remarkable progress through our 'Feral Spay Day' and 'PetSmart^tm Adoption' programs, passing the 100 mark for spaying/neutering, finding warm and loving homes for around 70 cats and kittens, and beginning our no-kill shelter, or sanctuary, which is currently housing approximately 60
cats and kittens!

We have now come to a time when we need to focus more clearly on the future and our mission, to develop a strategic plan which will bring about more unity in our efforts and establish our short and long term goals. We must continue to cultivate our sources of financial support, for this is critical if we are to have the resources to achieve our goals.

Meower Power^tm is a volunteer, non-profit corporation, and as such,
receives no government funding of any kind; therefore, our survival
depends on our donors. There are many challenges to be faced and we recognize that Meower Power^tm is up against formidable competition for donor support, being such a young organization. We further recognize that there are many potential supporters (and possibly a number of current supporters, too) who are not aware of the true nature of the Meower Power^tm mission, programs and goals. We are hard at work to "spread the word" far and wide. What we accomplish daily is a compelling argument for support, and of the surrounding the "right to life" of ferals, as well as colony management and care. What we need and want to do in the future is even more so. Please continue YOUR support. Help us help them have a safer, more secure life and a place in our society. Help us to end the tragedy of disposable animals and the killing of millions of healthy cats and kittens in our local shelters.

Meet Skittles, our Mascot

Skittles is a very unique and inspiring feline. When he was only a few
weeks old, a screen door closed on him and damaged his spine. His hind legs and hips were rendered useless, and he had to have stimulation to urinate and produce bowel movements. He required 24hour care, a task the president Cynthia Moose readily took on when the severely injured kitten was placed in Meower Power care.

Skittles is now a happy, well-adjusted juvenile. He still requires
assistance with litter box duties and his legs are still useless, but he
really is not bothered in the least. Very affectionate and curious, he can be more than a handful! Due to the efforts of our wonderful supporters and all those caring individuals out there who made donations, it was possible for Meower Power to purchase a custom-built 'wheelchair' for Skittles. This chair uses a sling to support his hind legs and hips, and allows him to maneuver using his front legs. (See the image below).

Skittles has been adopted by one of our wonderful volunteers, and has a happy and permanent home which provides him with the special care he needs. He has feline and human friends to play with and is one of the friendliest cats we have ever seen.

Skittles has survived terrible circumstances and is a lesson to us all on the value of all life, and what miracles can be accomplished if everyone chips in just a little!

	Skittles finally gets to take a spin in his new set of wheels. Typical of most teenagers with their first set of wheels he promptly crashes...but soon gets the hang of it.

	Skittles still has to sleep in a cage so he does not wander and fall down stairs or hurt himself in some other way. But he is perfectly happy with this arrangement because nobody can bother him during his R&R from family life!
	Skittles explores his home. He does the rounds making sure everything is as it should be. Notice the diaper, Skittles can't control his bladder so the huggies prevent any accidents. He doesn't even notice them and is very good at changing time.
	Skittles had to get a new wheelchair since he outgrew his old one. Once again, our wonderful supporters chipped in and in no time he was cruising in comfort.
	Skittles appreciates all your letters and all the help you give to his friends at the MPFCC shelter. Here he poses 'purrfectly' for the camera in his standard sitting posture.
