Quest's Story

Quest showing as a yearling

Update: Quest as a 2 year old

In March of 2002, I found out about the PMU industry. I learned about the many foals in this industry that do not find homes and are destined for feed lots. Since most of my horses are older, I decided that this would be a good way for me to get a young horse started for when my others are living the life of leisure in retirement. This would also save a foal's life, which is important to me. I did some research and the leading organization at the time appeared to be FoalQuest. I sent in my money for my foal immediately and began the wait to pick my foal.

The first photos were posted in early June. Within approximately another month, all of the original 5 farms had pictures posted on the internet. I spent many hours studying pictures. I wanted a foal that would be good for me but also one that might not find a home as easily as some of the other flashier foals. I do a lot of foxhunting and wanted a "heavy hunter" type and was looking mainly at draft crosses. I found several that I liked but the one that really got my attention was a filly from SC Farm. She was by the Percheron stallion Wold Johnnie Showtime (now standing in South Carolina) out of a Percheron/Quarter Horse cross mare. I figured that the amount of Percheron may be a little more than the average person would want and thus may be a good candidate for adoption. I ended up settling on her. The following pictures are the one I chose her from and then an updated one from later in the summer.

My next step was to select a name for her. The most obvious marking on her is the backwards question mark on her forehead. I used a dictionary and a thesaurus to come up with the name "Out Of The Question", or Quest for short.

Delivery of my filly was in Suffolk, Va on Nov. 10, 2002. She came all the way from Olds, Alberta, Canada, approximately one hour north of Calgary. Here is a picture taken at the drop off.

These are a few pictures taken after she was home for two weeks.

These are some more pictures taken just after Christmas 2002. She had just begun leading! Here she is showing off her new halter that she got for Christmas. At approximately 7 months, she stood about 13 hands tall.

April 15, 2003: Quest is now approx. 11 months old and is 14.1 hands tall at the withers and about 700 pounds. She is finally shedding out so I snapped some pictures of her out in the field.

I have kept track of Quest as she has grown. She definitely grows in spurts.
