Ogden Shops, Calgary, Alberta

Freight car repairs have been going on at Ogden since 1912 in two seperate car shops in the yard. Called the #1 and #2 Car Shops, they saw their fair share of passenger, stock and freight cars. A new era of car repairs started in February 1973 with the opening of the Steel Car Shop, and the closing of the older two repair shops.

The Steel Car Shop is the second largest  building on the complex, covering more than 9,986 square meters ( 11,943 square yards ) and was designed and tooled to effect heavy repairs to damaged freight cars of steel design. These types of cars consist of covered hoppers, open top hoppers, standard and high sided gondolas, coal cars, bulkhead flat cars, ore cars and AAR wreck damaged cars of all types.

The Steel Car Shop is presently staffed with about 300 employees and is responsible for major and minor repairs and rebuilds about 3,300 freight cars a year.
There are four main bays. Two of the bays house two tracks, each containing 5 cars per track. Each bay is equipped with two 20 ton overhead cranes with a 7 1/2 ton auxiliary hoist. They are pendant controlled from floor level, which makes this shop self sufficient, eliminating the need for mobile equipment for overhead handling. The third bay is a Fabrication Area that has machinery and equipment to do custom manufacturing and parts repairs, and also has 2 overhead cranes with a 7 1/2 ton capacity to lift heavy plate and parts. The fourth bay, houses 3 cars on the track and is used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for freight car repairs.

In the early part of 1997, the Car Department received ISO 9002 certification. This includes the Steel Car Shop and the Paint Shops. Obtaining this milestone was a long and sometimes frustrating achievement as every work procedure had to be documented along with training each of the departments employees and management staff. The rewarding part of all of this was the buy-in that was shown by everyone involved.
