Henry Andrew Hughes Family
1901

A traveling photographer had arrived in town, and the Henry Andrew Hughes family wanted to be certain of having their picture taken before he left. The year: 1901.

The family lived about a mile north of town. Henry Andrew Hughes (the bearded fellow) and his wife, Alice Givens Hughes (holding infant), got the children dressed specially for the occasion and the family walked through a virgin pine forest for this portrait, taken on the steps of the post office. The infant, Florence, was carried by Calvin Hughes, a nephew, who sits next to Mrs. Hughes. He was raised by the family after his father died.

Members of the family are, from left, Henry Andrew Hughes Jr., Frances, Asa Isiah, Calvin, Mrs. Hughes, Florence, Queen Victoria (standing to rear), Nina Bernice, Henry, Edna, and Daniel.

Henry Andrew Hughes raised a large family. Henry married Amanda Elizabeth Hogan (called Mandy). Henry and Mandy had five children: Frances, Etta, Victoria (called Queen), Daniel, and an infant (only lived one month). When Henry's brother Benton died, leaving two small children who lived nearby, Frank, the older of the two, came to live with Henry. After Mandy died (from pneumonia, having caught cold after scrubbing floors when she had not yet recovered from childbirth), Henry married Alice Givens, a pretty little blond, petite and plump. Henry and Alice had five or six children (on their way to having twelve children) when Henry's oldest daughter, Frances, died leaving her three small ones, so Henry and Alice took in those little ones. When Henry's brother Alfred was killed, young nephew Calvin came to live with Henry and Alice also. When Henry's daughter Edna separated from her husband, Henry had granddaughter Vivian enter the family. Another daughter lived nearby, out of desire or necessity, or perhaps both; so some of her children were in the family a good deal of the time. Henry and Alice's twelve children were: Asa Isiah, Edna, Henry Andrew Jr., Nina Bernice, Florence, Independence (only lived one month), Bailey Dees, Dora Esther, Robert, Clarence Evan, Elvin, and Ruby Eugene.

Mandy Hogan (Henry's first wife) was one of ten children of Daniel Augustus Hogan and Elizabeth A. Cox Hogan.
