Mill Creek Akitas

Origins John and Sheila Proudman, aka Mill Creek Akitas, obtained our first Akita, Smokey, in 1976 from Kirabran Akitas in New York. Two years later we selected the Kirabran puppy who would become our first champion. Flash, who appears in the drawing above, was sired by Ch. Tono Sama out of Ch. Fio Princess Kira of Kirabran, C.D. [ROM] as were his brothers, Ch. Tono Hai Kirabrans and Ch. Kirabran's Perfect Arrow, C.D. In 1980 when we decided to begin breeding Akitas, we were fortunately able to obtain Flash's littersister, Kirabran's Kiss-N-Tell. Kissie was bred to Ch. Krug's Yoshinori [ROM] and produced Ch. Mill Creek Bozo Jo, C.D., Ch. Mill Creek Chibi Kuma, and Ch. Mill Creek Sweet-N-Sassy.

Breeding Direction Sassy was subsequently linebred to Arrow's son, Ch. Kirabran's Hoshi Akai, C.D., and produced Mill Creek a Touch of Sass. Although typey and well built, she hated the show ring and never earned a single point. She was breed twice, once to Ch. Genesis Mr. Dexter, a son of Ch. Tobe's Abracadabra [ROM], and once to Ch. Takara's Saidai Osho, C.D., a linebred Lijo dog. The breeding with Dexter produced Ch. Mill Creek Mister Wizard, and the breeding with Shine produced Ch. Mill Creek Wildfire Brenda and her brother, Mill Creek Days of Thunder. Brenda was bred to Ch. Koma Inu Hide Your Heart, a full brother to Ch. Koma Inu Bronze Bruin, and produced a daughter, Mill Creek Born to Be Wild. Bonnie finished her championship in September, 1998 at the Somerset Hills show. Thanks to Kathy Mines for her great work and to the judges who liked Bonnie!

Memberships We have been members of the Akita Club of America since 1976 and helped form the Greater Baltimore Akita Club in 1981.

Policies We breed very few litters, and keep the pups we want to show. We prefer to place puppies as companions rather than as show or breeding prospects, and require that females be spayed before registration papers are transferred. We believe that dogs used for breeding should be certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and the Canine Eye Registry Foundation, and that they should have normal thyroid function and be in good general health. We also believe that good temperament is an absolute necessity in the modern Akita, and strive to produce happy, affectionate, self-confident dogs that respond well to proper training and are a credit to their breeders and owners. Our informational materials strongly suggest that all puppies attend puppy kindergarten classes and our contract requires that the new owner agree to take the dog to a basic-level obedience class by the time the dog is one year old. Our contract also stipulates that any dog we place can be returned to us at any time during the dog's life, for any reason. Because we have pups so infrequently, we do not offer any type of replacement "guarantee".
