DARBY'S PAGE
I had never seen a ferret before my son, Steve, a
Ranger in the 82nd Airborne, bought Darby. The first time I saw him I fell in love with
him. I had always had dogs and cats for pets, but I soon found that no other animal's love
could ever equal that of a ferret's. It all started when my husband and I would keep Darby
while our son went to the field. I grew so attached to him that I hated to see my son come
and take him home. The house always seemed so empty when he would leave. I found myself
listening for him and watching for him even though I knew he was gone. I could stand it no
longer! We went to a pet store and had them order us one of our very own. About the time
they came in, my son decided he no longer had the time to devote to Darby and he would be
better off with us. This was four years ago, and I have loved and treasured Darby ever
since.
Darby (named for Darby's Rangers) is the brains of the
operation. He can figure out how to do anything such as how to climb on to a table, push
the dishes off, open drawers and doors. He spends a lot of time lying on his back looking
up at the ceiling. I know he must be planning his next maneuver. His favorite treats are
broccoli stems, celery, raisins, and Winn Dixie’s pimento cheese spread. He also
likes tomato if it's fresh from the garden.
Darby likes to stay near the
phone in case he might get a call. Some ferret people believe they are aliens from
another planet and are trying to call the Mother Ship when messin' with the phone.
Darby loves presents especially
the wrapping paper. What's inside doesn't really matter as long as the paper
rattles. If it's in a bag, forget the present. Just give him the bag.
These handles on bags make good
peep holes!
I bet you are going to taste
good!
Even Darby gets tired every once
in a while and has to take a nap!
