"The End of an Era"

We'd like you to meet the Alaska RedDogs: CH ZuluDawn's Mountain Flyer, CGC, HIC (Piper) and Anchor Ridge Blazing Aurora, FCh (Rory). Have a look at the photos of our dogs and some of their friends over the years, and be sure and sign the guestbook. Note: We are not breeders, but we're always happy to answer any questions or help you find out more information about Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

Piper (AKA: P-Pipe, Pooh) has mellowed considerably over the years, and is a laid-back boy who wants nothing more than to just be with us, wherever we are. This includes breaking through any barrier to get to us. Kennels, dog gates, and closed windows don't hold him back. To date, Piper's Hound Group 1 win under Judge Joan Brazier at the Cook Inlet Kennel Club show in August 2002 is our biggest highlight. What a surprise, and what a thrill and honor to be included in the Best In Show ring with some very nice dogs!

Rory (AKA: Roar, "Rufus B Roo-rah", Roo, Little Mutt-head...The name Rory means "Red King") keeps us all on our toes. Rory's a champion counter-surfer and amuses us by taking his bowl to the kitchen when he thinks he wants something there. His temperament isn't quite the fearless Ridgeback, as he gets spooked by strange noises easily. He isn't fond of dog shows, but he's one point away finishing his conformation championship. He's a lure-coursing maniac and finished his ASFA Field Championship in July 2006, making him the first Ridgeback in Alaska to earn all his points locally. He LOVES to race and it takes a lot to hold him back at the line.

Leash: a must-have

History of the Breed
Rhodesian Ridgebacks, also called 'African Lion Hounds', are a relatively new breed compared to others. The 112th breed to be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955, Ridgebacks can only be traced back the last 400-500 years.

As their name implies, they originated in Africa as a hunting dog, companion and family protector. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the only known breed who, in a pack, could bay a lion and survive. (Contrary to some accounts, they did not kill the lion - they merely cornered it until hunters arrived.) It is believed that Great Danes, Mastiffs and Greyhounds, to name a few, played a role in the Ridgeback as they are today.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are striking dogs to behold, with their trademark characteristic of the ridge, running from just between the shoulders to a point between the hips. Often to a first-time viewer, the ridge is mistaken for the dog having his hackles up. This is not the case though, so don't worry!

Personality
A typical Ridgeback's personality is aloof and stand-offish to strangers. However, they are loyal and loving companions to their family and they bond heavily to the people they love. Ridgebacks are very much "people dogs" and they love to be where their people are - including right in the middle of your bed at night! (See our photo album for proof)

These are not dogs suitable for a first-time dog owner or the inexperienced. Ridgebacks can be quite headstrong and independent, and require consistant, positive training. They do not respond well to "heavy-handed" training and can have their spirit broken easily by those less experienced in the positive training methods. It can also be said that Ridgebacks are very food-motivated. It is a rare or ill Ridgeback that doesn't want food.

Although these dogs are athletic and muscular, they have a moderate activity level for their size. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are just as happy in a full-out run after small prey as they are stretched out sleeping in the sun.

A Ridgeback is not typically aggressive toward other dogs - mostly they are just looking a buddy to play with. However, they can and will defend themselves if threatened.

Now that you have a brief history of the breed under your belt, we invite you to browse our photos, stories, and rescue information. Please sign our guestbook before you leave!
