Birth is a natural process, not a medical procedure.

MAGGIE'S HOME BIRTH PAGE

Painting of a woman.

This is a picture of me, of course, um... (before I had children!)
Okay, I was fooling! I'll try to get serious.

My real name is Maggie but I usually answer to "MOM."

One of my interests is home birth. There are some people who have their children born at home because they don't want the "negatives" such as medical intervention. Even a natural healthy birth can be interfered with by the doctor, which can sometimes bring on complications and that can mean more doctor Me, 9 months pregnant, in 1985. (mis)management. One example of that is rupturing the membranes. Another is medicating the mother. How about the practice of forcing the mother to stay in bed so a fetal monitor can be attached? Even getting prepped can sometimes cause harm. What about just the fear and stress of being in hospital. Yes, some people will say just the opposite, that they would be scared to be giving birth anywhere but in a hospital. That's okay, each woman should be able to choose where she is the most comfortable. That's the whole point. Make your own choice, become informed and make safe choices.

Some think about the positives of a home birth, the advantages of being able to dictate their surroundings, their choice of who is there, their style of birth. You can play quiet music, sip on juice, get up and phone your mom (and tell her how your labor is progressing!) You can even invite your mom or whoever you want to be at your side if you are at home. You get to be the boss. You and your partner are in this together, not your doctor and the hospital staff.

Hopefully, people don't choose home birth because they feel forced by well meaning friends to "do the right thing." What you choose should be based on reasoning after learning all you can about it. It can be a near miraculous event or it can be a disaster with the worst possible outcome in rare cases.

You are taking you and your baby's life in your hands. Of course that's why I avoided hospitals, I stay away from them unless I need them. You decide for yourself. I am not ever going to try to talk someone into having a home birth, I simply suggest considering it and investigating the good it can do for not only your new little human cutie, but for yourself and your relationship with those who surround you in this moment of joy.

When I was in labor each time I thought about how I was doing what women have done throughout the ages. I felt strong and so feminine at the same time. Okay, my third baby was pretty difficult. I almost had to go to a hospital, but I had just been in a car accident 2 weeks prior to delivery. I was tired but I was so glad to be at home. That labor was slow at first and I know I would of been induced or worse if I was in a hospital. As it was, my midwife called in a more experienced midwife, who helped get me in a "better working position" Anna holding her newborn sister. and within a half hour I was looking at my precious little Serena.

This is a picture of her big sister holding her when
Serena was about 10 minutes old.

Well, I hope you didn't mind my little sermon. Pregnancy and childbirth really are fantastic.
(Easy for me to say now that I'm finished having mine!)
Enjoy reading, Enjoy your pregnancy.
Enjoy your little baby!

Now...
Take some time and
check out some of these links!

Some are for pregnancy, some birth in general, and many are homebirth oriented.

I offer these in an attempt to help you find sites of interest to a pregnant or soon to be, pregnant woman and do not necessarily promote the beliefs or practices found in them if you or your healthcare professional feel it is not in your best interests . As much as I prefer home birth, I am not trying to convince you to try it.  You must want to do it on your own, and I hope you read as much as possible about the benefits and possible problems of home, hospital or birthing centers.  Any child rearing practices that differ from what feels right to you, probably isn't best for you or your child.  On the other hand, you may find ideas that you never heard of before and are pleasantly surprised at how much more practical, spiritual, and  loving the ideas fit in with your family.

I think this is a variety of first class sites. Many of these have been given awards. Here are pages on Childbirth, Breastfeeding, Rearing your children, and other issues dealing with women and their children.
