Liberty, Freedom, and the Church

Joseph Smith ran for the Presidency of the United States. It is impossible to know what success he may have had if he had not met his death in June 1844 by the hands of a blood thirsty mob at Carthage Jail.

His platform was well grounded in principles of truth and justice. If the American people had voted him into office, it could have revolutionized the course of American politics and set a precedent worthy of adoption to all the nations who espouse the course of truth, freedom, honesty, and justice. Designing men have robbed us, the citizens of the US, and the world, of much glory because they have forgotten the basic principles of honostey, integrity, and morality upon which this nation was founded.

How many of you can say that this adminstration which we now have is honest, moral, and to be truly trusted?

How many of you have confidence in them to run the country when their private lives are tainted with filth?

The general attitude seems to be: "I don't care what they do in their private lives." I declare before you and God that it does matter what they do. This nation was founded upon moral values, honesty, and integrity. We as a people, are forgeting that we have to take responsibility for ourselves. We have the Statue of Liberty on the east coast. Perhaps we should have a Statue of Responsiblity as well, not only for those who lead this country, but for the citizens as well.

As followers of Jesus Christ and members of his Church, we must see that those we elect view the role of Government as we do.

"We believe that no government can exist in peace, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the free exersize of conscience, the right and control of property, and the protection of life." (Doctrine and Covenants 134:2)

Three things are mentioned here:
1. Free exercise of conscience
2. Right and control of property
3. Protection of life

President Benson said: "The proper function of government is limited to defending its citizens against bodily harm, theft and involuntary servitude from within and without. It cannot claim the power to redistribute money of property not force reluctant citizens to perform acts of charity against their will... The sole object and only legitimate end of government is to protect the citizens in the enjoyment of life, liberty and property and when the government assumes other functions it is oppression."

Unfortunatly, our government has over stepped its bounds in many ways. There are those who wish to take away our freedom--freedoms that may be bought back only again with blood.

Moroni was last Book of Mormon Prophet. He saw the destruction of his people that happened because of "secret combinations." He saw our day, 1600 years before, and the things that would happen in our government.

"And they [the secret combinations] have caused...the destruction of the people of Nephi. And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nations, behold, they shall be destroyed... Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinatoins shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain...Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come amoung you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be amoung you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for a vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up. For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people." (Ether 8:21-25)

The Prophet Joseph Smith said: "Even this nation will be on the very verge or crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground... when the Constitution is on the brink of ruin, this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction."

Will you be amoung those who will "bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction"? If you desire to be numbered amoung those who will, you must (1) be righteous and moral. (2) learn the principles of the Constitution and then abide by its precepts. (3) become involved in civic affairs as was Joseph Smith when he was murdered. (4) Seek wise and honest men and women. Test them against section 134 of Doctrine and Covenants. Vote for people who protect life, not those who condone killing millions of babies a year because of conveneince. (5) Make our influence felt by our votes, phone calls, emails, letters, and whatever else.

Brothers and sisters, this is our cause. The gospel couldn't stand without a honest and moral government. We must let our views, and truths, be shared with all until the "secret combinations" are cleared from the world. I have faith that the Constitution will be saved, but not in Washington. It will be saved by the citizens of the United States who love and cherish freedom. They will be led by the noble youth of the Church.

Now let us stand up as the children of God and go forward as Captain Moroni declaring, "In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives and our children"!
