Stories from 'OUR TOWN'

Our Town

Well, we've come to the third week of July and summer couldn't be better. Tiny apples have appeared on the apple trees, tiny T-bones on the T-bone trees, and we can see baby shrimp as a result of the blossoms alongside the filet mignon vines.

We've already harvested the burgers from the Hamburger bush.

Is your summer going well? I hope so. I ran into "Tired Tom" when I was uptown on Saturday. He is quite a character--always friendly but always tired!

"Tired" Tom has an awful time with his women-friends. I suppose these hot summer days don't help a bit. Old Tom told me that he had a run-in with Tiny (one of his gals) the other day. I appears he had accepted a dinner invitation at Bill's house. Now Bill and his wife are real nice people. They often invite folks to their house because they just like to have the company and they figure "single" folks need a home cooked meal on occasion. Tiny didn't take kindly to this. I guess she thought Old Tom didn't need to be someplace without her. She flew into a rage and threw a watermelon at Tom's truck.

SPLAT!!----all over the windshield in 14 pieces! Tom was aghast. He begged her to calm down but she began picking up the chunks and heaving them at him. She hit him in the head with two of them as he jumped into his truck to spin away. Before he could close the door, she chucked a few chunks right into the truck.

Well Old Tom hit the accelerater and away he went, chunks and all. When he arrived at the tavern (where he thought he could be safe), his friends said "Where in blazes have you been. Were you joyriding in a melon patch or were you in a watermelon war?" Tom likes to tell his war stories, so I guess he actually enjoyed all the fuss. Well he must enjoy cleaning his truck, too. Skinny little guy like that has lots of work to do. No wonder he's always tired.

Try to stay cool.

Thats all for now-----happy trails.
