One of the advantages of having the name Atyeo is that it is not only rare, but only appears in Mid-Somerset for hundreds of years. Our research to date has managed to trace all Atyeos, wherever they are in the world, back to a few small villages in mid-Somerset: Langport, Othery, Stoke St. Gregory, Middlezoy, Weston Zoyland, etc. Until the 12th/13th Centuries, only the aristocracy tended to have surnames. The peasants didn't really start using surnames until a minor population explosion meant that you had to differentiate, between say, John (the) Fletcher (= arrowmaker) from John (the Black-) Smith, or John At(the)hill, etc. Most surname dictionaries agree on the basic derivation of Atyeo from Somerset/Dorset/Devon dialect, for example, one has the following entry: "Yeo is a common name of streams in Devon, Somerset. It is Old English ea 'river', which in the dialects of these counties has given 'yeo'. Yeo has often displaced earlier names." Another dictionary mentions "Atyeo: Roger atte yo 1333 'Dweller by the river'. So, Atyeo (or Attyoe, or all the other variations we have come across) comes from Old English Atte yeo, meaning 'dweller by the river'. The Roger atte Yo mentioned was actually in Devon, rather than Somerset, but the earliest mention we have found is: "John atte Yo (or Yoo) Somerset Subsidy-Roll 1327." (from yet another dictionary of surnames). Note that there are still at least 3 rivers in Somerset and Devon named 'Yeo', one of which forms part of the border of Langport Parish. Could one of these have been the original 'Yeo' we were named after?
