Trinity Church Welcomes You!

The Bishop of London licensed the Reverend Hezekiah Ford on 29 September 1774. Having come to the colonies, he served St. Jude's Parish in Surry County for a short time. What happened among Anglicans and Episcopalians in or near this area is unclear until the founding of our parish.

Tradition says that the Methodist church on Ward's Gap Road served as the first meeting place for "the Episcopalians" in Mount Airy. The mother of General J.E.B. Stuart is said to have been one of the communicants. According to this tradition, J.E.B. Stuart's sisters were confirmed here in 1852 (though this date makes it highly unlikely).

Construction of Trinity Church was begun in Spring of 1896, and the first service of our current building was held in July of 1896. Trinity was consecrated on October 13, 1900 and was dedicated to " ...the Worship and Service of Almighty God, the administration of His Holy Sacraments, the Reading and Preaching of His Holy Word, and for the performance of All Holy Offices."

To the original structure, construction of a parish hall was added in 1954. Our small nave, Sunday school rooms, offices, and meeting hall are built into the slope of a hill from Main street to the alley below.

We are a community of Christians who recognize and affirm each other's differing gifts and roles, as members of the body of Christ who are committed to doing God's work in the world.

Our mission is based on the letters in WE SOW, which stand for four related aspects of our purpose: Worship, Enable, Support, and Outreach. Our purpose is:

To WORSHIP together and to glorify God through the liturgy of the Episcopal Church, to hear God's word, to receive the sacraments, to pray together, and to sing his praise.

To ENABLE each of us to become the person that God calls us to be and an effective minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; to educate us in the teachings of Christ and the salvation story of God's relationship with his people, and to apply these concepts in the world in which we live.

To SUPPORT each other in our various ways of serving God, both in times of trial and in times of celebration, as a community of individuals who love one another.

To REACH OUT beyond our own congregation to meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and to invite and welcome others to join us in our endeavors.

This statement of purpose is intended to be a guide for our decisions, activities, the work of our leaders, committees and volunteers, and the use of our property.
