NEW FINDS FOR 1999

Yes, I have been metal detecting this year!! I've made a few
good finds - you will see photos of them on this page.

(THIS SECTION WILL BE UPDATED AS NEW FINDS ARE MADE AND WHEN I GET THE FILM DEVELOPED!!)

The following photos are of finds made at a friends place. He told me of a school that was at the site back in the early 1900's and "silly old me" never got there untilTWO YEARS LATER!! The land has been plowed, tilled, planted, and harvested for 10 years. This keeps the soil "churning" to bring more finds to the surface, each year would have brought more good keepers to the surface, some of these finds were virtually on top of the ground!!
One of the favorite finds is a button. Through the help of others, I've found out its a New York militia button from the period following the Revolutionary War, but before the Civil War!!

Also found was a "Junior G-Man" badge. Slightly bent out of shape but still a nice find. If you have any helpful hints on how to straighten it out, let me know!! I was told "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!" So far its just as found, I thought of maybe a little heat to soften the metal and a gradual pressure to bend it back --- I think I'll leave it alone!! (I will take any suggestions!!)

This one was found by my detecting partner, Terry Schroeder, in the same area mentioned above. Its a 1/2 Skilling, from Norway, dated 1867. Does anyone know what a Skilling is?? Is it like a dollar, quarter, dime, or what?? It was a nice find for him and he also found the only silver at the site, a 1906 Barber dime.

This was MY best find at the site, even though its got the "green scaley stuff" on it. I'm soaking it in the olive oil to try to get more of the green off. Its an 1865 two cent piece! Most people never heard of a "two cent piece". They were minted in the U.S.A. from 1864 to 1873. I didn't know what I had dug up until I got home and looked in my coin book.
