THE HOME RUN RACE

McGWIRE vs SOSA

Previous Record:
Roger Maris with 61 home runs in a season.

September 27th, 1998
Mark McGwire extends his lead in the game against the Montreal Expos. He hit run #69 in the 3rd inning. Then in the 7th inning he hit run #70. That puts him ahead of Sosa by four runs. The Cardinals won the game 6-3, thus ending regular season play for the St. Louis Cardinals.

September 28, 1998
In the play off game against the San Fransico Giants, Sammy Sosa hit no runs, leaving his count at 66 which was hit on the 25th in the 4th inning of the game against the Houston Astros. The Chicago Cubs won today's game 5-3 for the last wild card slot.

I won't forget one of the joint interviews with Sosa & McGwire. The interviewer asked "Who's the man?", Sosa replied "He's the man (pointing at McGwire) in America and I'm the man in the Dominican Republic."

CONGRATULATIONS to Mark McGwire!! He now holds the record for the most runs hit in regular season play. He hit a total of 70 runs breaking Roger Maris' record of 61.
