Just getting ready for a typical day out at a Dog Agility Competition Trial.

Agility training strengthens the bond between dog and handler,
and provides fun and exercise for both.

KIRA CD ADM JDM

Here I come. am nearly there..

I made it.

Where are you mum? Weaving

My great dog Kira, she flies through the weaving and as you can see she enjoys jumping, who needs a handler!!! She loved agility had her CD(Companion Dog) title in obedience, SUCCESS we finally obtained our ADM (Agility Dog Masters)on the 14th July 2001 (Yippee). To get these titles you have to pass 3 competition trials in AD, 5 trials for your ADX title and 7 trials for your ADM getting a clear round and doing it in the time allocated.
We have also done Jumpers and we have obtained our JDM(Jumpers Dog Masters) title, where you have to pass 7 trials going clear and getting it in the time!!! I relied on my dog finishing first as I was invariably way behind!!!!!!!!!! It required a lot of hard work and patience but it had been fun competing with her. I never knew what Kira was going to do when in the Trial ring as she liked to keep me on my toes and not take her for granted. She retired when she was 11 yrs old and passed away peacefully in her sleep January 2009 aged 14 years.

Then there was our other dog Jenah(passed away early 2008) she was affectionately called "The Rocket Rat" as she flew around the course as you can see she loved doing it and that size doesn't matter. If you are wondering where she is in the photo she is the little black dot going over the middle of the jump!

In August 2007 I got a lovely little male German Coolie pup who I called Ashwyn, he is such a good natured dog and lovely to train, we hope to compete in obedience & agility this year 2009

When competing in Agility you have to do a number of obstacles in the time frame set by the judge some of the obstacles you do are the following.

tyre: .. triple jump

Spread:.... A Frame,..

To obtain your AD (Agility Dog) Title you have to go round a course of 14-16 obstacles
To obtain your ADX (Agility Dog Excellent) Title you have to go round a course of 14 - 20 obstacles
To obtain your Masters Title you have to go round a course of 20-22 obstacles
As well as doing any of the above you are also running against the clock and you must go clear!

Agility Course Poem

You walk the course, memorising the way
A clear round you seek, could this be the day?
The judge is there, the one with The Power.
To raise an arm and shatter the hour
Course length is discussed, the time available
And don't forget "GO" before you leave the table
Your number is called "DOG" by your side
It's up to you, there's not place to hide.
The heart is a pounding, the nerves are on edge
The knees are a knocking, what was that the Judge said?
"You may go when you're ready" are the words you now hear
A command is given, the first obstacle's clear
A tunnel, a tyre, a change of direction
The weavers are next, please, no rejection
That crisis has passed, you now look for a number
To show the way, no time to slumber
Touch the colours are the words now in your head
Cause fast approaching is the dog walk I dread.
Up and down, no problem there, but don't become complacent--just take care!
A "come" an "over" a turn and twist
A few more jumps - was that on the list? The spread is last, the "dog" senses for sure
It's up and over, that's one foot in the door
The "dog" comes to you, a big pat and a hug
It knows it's pleased you
Now for the Judge!
Test finished
Clear round
But did we get the time
It's now been confirmed
That title is MINE!

A DOG'S EYE VIEW OF OBEDIENCE CLASS

HEEL ON LEAD: Walk as slowly as you can, then spring forward with all your weight. If your handler falls flat on his face, you score 25 points.
RECALL: When your handler shouts at you, assume rock deafness….On no account sit in front of your handler, because he will only make you heel… 25 points if handler loses voice.
RETRIEVE THE DUMB-BELL: On no account fetch it back because he will only throw it away again. If he wants the stupid piece of wood let hem fetch it himself; you will be helping to train him not to throw away things he really wants… You get 5 points every time handler gets the dumb-bell.
SIT : Keep your back end hovering one inch away from the ground.
STAY: As soon as your handler leaves you follow quietly at his heels…Wait until your handler looks comfortable then get up and run like the wind and when your handler screams at you, charge straight back and sit perfectly in front of him….25 points if you can convince all the other dogs to come with you.
CONCLUSION: Do any exercise you choose perfectly! This will leave your handler thinking that the earlier mistakes were his fault and he will take you to training classes week after week.
