Leprechaun Game
Two weeks ago, a leprechaun "lost" all his gold in our play spaces, he left us his pot and a reward notice saying that if we could find all his gold and refill his pot by St. Pats Day, he would leave us a reward. The children have been having a wonderful time finding the gold (gold spray-painted items - anything I could think of - marbles, rocks, buttons, keys, feathers, spoons etc.). Each time they find a piece of gold, they place it in the leprechauns pot and I give them a "Lucky Shamrock" sticker to put on their cubby name label (we count how many items we have and how many stickers each child has - Math). On St. Pats Day, the leprechaun will return at nap time and pick up his small pot full of gold - and in return he will leave a large pot (a Halloween witch's cauldron) full of a reward. The reward will consist of shamrock shaped cookies, a pitcher of lemonade tinted green, festive cups and napkins, and a goodie bag for each child.

Five Little Shamrocks

One green shamrock, in the morning dew;
Another one sprouted;
And then there were two.
Two green shamrocks, growing 'neath the tree,
Another one sprouted;
And then there were three.
Three green shamrocks, by the cottage door,
Another one sprouted;
And then there were four.
Four green shamrocks, near a beehive;
Another one sprouted;
And then there were five.
Five little shamrocks, bright and emerald
Five little shamrocks, bright and emerald green,
Think of all the luck these shamrocks will bring.

It's St. Patrick's Day!
Tune: "Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands"

It's St. Patrick's Day!
Dance a jig together.
It's St. Patrick's Day!
Time for sunny weather.
(Chorus: "la, la........")
When St. Patrick came along to the Emerald Island,
He chased all the snakes away; you won't find snakes in Ireland!

St. Patrick Songs and Poems
Looking for a Leprechaun
Tune: "Mary Had a Little Lamb"

I'm looking for a leprechaun,
Leprechaun, leprechaun.
I'm looking for a leprechaun,
Do you know where he's gone?

He wears a suit that's made of greeen,
Made of green, made of green,
He wears a suit that's made of green,
Do you know where he's gone?

He lives by a rainbow and hides his gold,
Hides his gold, hides his gold,
He lives by a rainbow and hides his gold,
Do you know where he's gone?

If you see a leprechaun,
Leprechaun, leprechaun,
If you see a leprechaun,
Please tell me where he's gone!

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is here, you see.
We'll pick some shamrocks, one, two, three.
We'll count the leaves and look them over,
And maybe find a four-leafed clover.
I'll sew green buttons on my vest,
Green for St. Patrick is the best.
I'll wear a green hat, very high,
And dance a jig--at least I'll try!

Rainbow Bridge

There's a great big cloud over here.
(form clouds with hands to right side of body)
And a great big cloud over there.
(form cloud with hands to left side of body)
The rain falls down and makes a path.
(make pretend falling rain with fingers)
A rainbow bridge up in the air!
(make a large arc from left to right with hands)

Leprechaun Ladders
Supplies:
Green Construction Paper
Straws
Strings

On St. Patrick's day the leprechaun is very mischievious. He upsets chairs while children are outside playing, walks through the jello, and dyes the mashed potatoes light green. To help him keep out of mischief we make leprechaun ladders for him to play on. Stringing shamrocks alternately with snips of straws. Hang from ceiling or windows.

Dyed Foods
It is a tradition in our house to dye everything we make to eat that day green. We dye the milk, eggs, chicken(that one is a little hard to choke down!), rolls. I mean everything. If you do this go easy onthe green food coloring. You will pass it for several days!! YIKES!

Irish Shamrock Pins

Supplies needed:
green Pipe Cleaners
white or green Tulle fabric (netting) large square
Tacky glue
Scissors
small Shamrock attern
1/4 inch white satin Ribbon, about 10 inches long
small white satin Rose (available at craft stores)
tiny star Sequins
small Safety Pin

Directions:
Lay your shamrock pattern on your work area. Next, twist the pipe cleaner into the shape of the shamrock, including the stem. Twist the ends together and cut off any excess. On one side of the pipe cleaner shamrock, run a stream of tacky glue all around. Lay this sticky side down in the middle of the tulle fabric and let it dry completely. Now take the scissors and trim all around the outside edge of the shamrock. To finish the pin, tie a bow around the top of the stem, and glue the satin rose onto the middle of the bow. Attach a small safety pin to the back of the shamrock where the ribbon is wrapped on the stem. The rose is optional, as are the tiny star sequins you can glue onto the tulle fabric.
