Navy Recruits Marching:1982

Michael McMillan is a native of Coldwater, Michigan and graduated Coldwater High School in 1982. Enlisting in the U. S. Navy he began his basic training in Navy Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes IL. This was followed by six weeks of training at Basic Submarine School, New London, CT.

In March of 1983 he reported to the USS GEORGE C. MARSHALL (SSBN-654) which was undergoing overhall in the Newport News Shipyard. During his tour he help onload over $20 million dollars in parts and equipment. At the end of the overhaul period he was assigned to the Gold Crew for four deterrent patrols. In January 1987 he completed his tour on-board, achieving the rank of Storekeeper 2nd Class.

Petty Officer McMillan was assigned temporary duty at Submarine Group Two. While here he assisted the shipping expeditors at PMOLANT SSN SUPPORT DETACHMENT, Groton, CT. In September of 1987 Petty Officer McMillan arrived at ARMED FORCES SOUTHERN EUROPE and was assigned to the SOUTHERN REGION COMMUNICATIONS AND LOGISTICS DEPOT, Lago Patria, Italy. He performed the duties of Contracting Clerk and as Technical Auditor.

In September 1990 he reported to the Electic Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, CT as Junior Storekeeper of the Pre-Commissioning Unit MARYLAND (SSBN-738), he was advanced to Storekeeper 1st Class during this period. Upon commissioning on June 13, 1992 he was assigned to the USS MARYLAND (SSBN-738) (GOLD) where he completed an intensive work-up period which included every major inspection.

Petty Officer McMillan transferred to the USS GRAYLING (SSN-646)in February 1993 as Leading Storekeeper. He ran all facets of supply operations until his transfer in November of 1994.

He was assigned to Trident Refit Facility as part of the Submarine Logistics Center as a Site Monitor, he was responsible for inputting supply requests for the entire submarine fleet. He also validated requistions with each unit to ensure proper accounting for these requisitions.

While assigned as Leading Storekeeper aboard the USS WEST VIRGINIA (SSBN-736)(BLUE) Petty Officer McMillan achieved many professional successes including the Supply Blue "E".

As his final tour, PRIORITY MATERIAL OFFICE, BREMERTON WA was a challenging enviroment. With the 9/11 attacks and the commencement of the War on Terror the job of tracking emergency material support had a special significance. It was a rewarding experience to assist the Pacific Fleet in their endevors for the American people and the world.

On September 30th, 2003 Storekeeper First Class (Submarines) Michael A H McMillan retired from active service in the United States Navy. Petty Officer McMillan has been awarded the Joint Service Commedation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4 awards) and the National Defense Medal. He is married to the former Teresa Cline of Coldwater, Michigan. They have a son and daughter, Michael and Kayla.
