The Cloister Walk
by Kathleen Norris

This is one woman's journey into contemplation, as she travels to a variety of destinations across the globe in search of her soul. She offers some interesting history of convent life now and through the ages, and a lot of food for thought.
Sisters in Arms: Catholic Nuns Through Two Millennia
by Jo Ann Kay McNamara

I include this on the medieval page because this is such an outstanding history of the beginning, evolution through centuries, and survival, of women's religious communities. And Ms. McNamara covers the Middle Ages thoroughly. This book is actually so interesting that it is fun reading. It is educational in spite of itself.
Popular Religion in the Middle Ages: Western Europe 1100 - 1300
by Rosalind Brooke and Christopher Brooke

Everything from false relics, to the Crusades and the custom of pilgrimage, to the rise and role of the Inquisition. A must read for the serious medieval history buff.
Veil and Cowl: Writings from the World of Monks and Nuns
by James B. Simpson, Editor

An inspiring collection of essays from various persons, including modern voices and some from the past. The spiritual world through the eyes of those few who choose to live between this world and the next.
Plain and Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish
by Sue Bender
Ms. Bender surprised friends and family one day by announcing that she had arranged to live with an Amish family for several months. She surprised herself with what she found, and how it affected her future. It's a book that offers interesting insight into the daily life and beliefs of the Amish, but even more it's a book that records one persons spiritual coming of age. Really moving reading. I have given this one as a gift.
Visions of God: Four Medieval Mystics and Their Writings
by Karen Armstrong
Better than the actual writings, which are themselves a fascinating journey into the medieval experience and popular belief, is Ms. Armstrong's summaries of the lives and philosophies she highlights. I wish there were more than four!.
Talking to Heaven: A Medium's Message of Life After Life
by James Van Praagh
James Van Praagh's inspiring first book on the insights he has gained through his lifetime work as a medium. In particular, skeptics will find this very worthwhile reading.
