GREAT DUCK ISLAND

Great Duck Island, commonly called "Big Duck" is the largest of three islands - Great Duck, High Duck and Low Duck. Great Duck lies about two miles off the village of Woodward's Cove, Grand Manan. The fog alarm was established there in 1886. The horn blasts 4 seconds and is silent for 56 seconds. The lighthouse was built in 1966 at the southern end of the island and flashes every ten seconds.

L. to R. house, barn with outhouse in front, henhouse, roof of reservoir in back, whistle house.
The reservoir was used for the steam engine and pipes ran from it to the whistle house.
There was also a storage house and derrick down over the bank behind the house.

The house burned down Oct.5, 1955, due to a defective chimney, and two new dwelling houses were built.
