Importance of Nutrition

    Things to Ponder
  1. If you have good health, how many hours a day do you spend enjoying it? Answer: 24 hours
  2. If you eat whatever you think you will enjoy, without regard to nutrition, how many hours a day do you enjoy eating? Answer: maybe 2?
  3. If you are in poor health, how many hours a day do you suffer? Answer: it varies but probably a lot more than you spend eating - maybe 24!
  4. There is a computer term - "GIGO" - Garbage In/Garbage Out. Isn't it the same with the human body?
  5. Can you gradually change your diet and come to enjoy food that is good for you? Answer: Yes - open your mind and give it a try for awhile!
  6. Do you want to give your children the best chance at enjoying good health? We all know what that answer should be!
  7. Do you enjoy frequent visits to the Doctor or would you rather be doing something else?
  8. In a recent survey, how many Americans said they are concerned about the nutritional content of the food they buy? Answer: Less than 50%
  9. Is it really worth it to be a part of that majority? You answer.

There are tons of nutritional information out there! Sometimes it can get really confusing. One minute it seems they are saying you should eat "this" and the next minute it seems they say "this" is bad, eat "that". But, if you really examine all the evidence and research and don't be to quick to jump at the latest new idea that ONE person comes up with (no matter how many degrees he has after his name), you can come up with a healthy plan. Some things have been pretty much proven over the years, such as:

  1. The more fruits and vegetables you eat the better, including preventing cancer and heart disease.
  2. The larger variety of healthy foods you eat the better.
  3. Supplements, within reason, can help fill in the gaps, but in most all studies the good effects are greatest when the nutrients come from real food!
  4. The less processed the food the better.
  5. The less animal fats people eat, the healthier over all.
  6. Minimizing or even eliminating fatty red meats and such from the diet can't hurt, as long as a variety of other foods and a moderate amount of protein is taken in.
  7. Eating more than you burn off, in the way of calories, will increase your risk of obesity and disease.
  8. But - not everyone that is overweight is eating an excessive amount, but the right foods combined with exercise can at least keep the weight under control and contribute to health.
  9. If you are slim a little sugar probably won't hurt, but if you are trying to keep weight down, it's hard to do without avoiding most sweets (and fats).
  10. The body does need a small amount of "essential fatty acids" - from such things as fish, flaxseed oil, etc. (we will cover this more later) to function correctly, so SOME fat is necessary!
