INSCRIPTIONS AT MOUNT SALEM M. E. CHURCHYARD
Alexandria Township
Source: By Beverly G. Kirby-McDonough - Transcribed December 2006.
The Mount Salem M. E. Church was dedicated in 1846 on a lot donated by David Dilts. The original structure was remodeled and expanded in 1865 to 36 feet wide by 52 feet long, with a ceiling height of 20 feet. The cost of the expansion was $3,600. Unfortunately, some of the graves were covered over in the process. By the 1940s, worship services were held infrequently, and the last service took place in 1952. In 1973 the church was donated to Alexandria Township. Recently, a fresh coat of pure white paint was applied to the exterior at a cost of $8,000. The property now appears on the National Register of Historic Places by United States Department of the Interior.
