Pattenburg United Methodist Churchyard

222; September 1987.
The Pattenburg Methodist Church is located on the north
side of Main Street, 0.2 mile east of its junction with Hunterdon County Route 614 in
Union Township. The burying ground adjoins the church, is well maintained, and
currently in use. It is surrounded by a stone wall in which appears a stone
inscribed: "E. R. A. 1857".
The church was erected in 1853 on land donated to the
Trustees in 1852. In 1883 the village boasted a church, a school, a grist-saw mill,
a tavern, coal yard, blacksmith shop, and a milliner's shop. Today, the village is a
quiet oasis a short distance from busy Interstate I-78, whose cross-country travelers are
barely aware of Pattenburg's existence.
The following inscriptions were copied and checked on
August 3, 1985 by GSNJ Trustees Sinclair and Stratford. The inscriptions have been
consolidated into family groups. An asterisk after a name indicates that the person
and the relationship were given in an inscription, but no gravestone was found for that
person. Inscriptions "on same stone", "in same plot", etc.,
suggest a family relationship but none was stated on the stones or is assumed in this
compilation.
