Newsgroups with interesting content:

          Text

  • mi.jobs        - newsgroup with help wanted for Michigan area
  • rec.models.railroad  - newsgroup for Model Railroaders
  • alt.railroad   -  The real railroaders gather here to interact
  • rec.photo.digital  - a group discussing digital cameras and related websites.

Note:  Newsgroups are different from hot links. You need to use your browser to subscribe to the ones you are interested in. There are thousands of them out there. Once you subscribe, you can access the messages just like you would access mail. They provide a header and if you are interested you can access the rest of the message and/or picture. Some ISPs(particularly AOL) do not allow access to all newsgroups.   Graphics(Pictures) can be saved by right clicking on them and then doing a save file as to download it to your hard drive or floppy.

Warnings:  Responding to a message or sending in a new one may get your e-mail ID picked up by spammers.  Some participants modify their E-mail addresses to prevent this.  That however, makes it difficult for people, with a common interest with you, to contact you.  Many put their E-mail address or instructions for correcting it, in the body of the message.  The other problem with newsgroups is inappropriate content, usually of a sexual nature.  These are usually identifiable from the header and can be skipped, marked as read or deleted without actually reading them.
