Phyllis C. Michael was honored in 1998 when the Community Service Award of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was presented to her by our Chapter at a special event held in a retirement home at Berwick,PA where Mrs. Michael had been a resident for nearly four years.

She was then eighty-nine and was continuing to add to the poetry and other writings that have brought her world-wide acclaim. At that time she was preparing four new books for publication; putting together a set of scrapbooks containing her work in order to present them to the Berwick Library and playing the piano at every opportunity to the enjoyment of those about her.

A teacher from 1928 to 1966, she found a way to continue to educate by meeting with the Nurses'aides at the retirement home during their training sessions. Helping them understand the needs and concerns of the residents.

The March 1999 issue of Billy Graham's Decision Magazine contained yet another one of her poems. Decision has published one or two of her poems each year for the past twenty years.

In 1979 she was voted Best Loved Poet for Ideals Magazine and has published seventeen books of inspirational poetry and over 400 hymns and anthems. These are also translated into many foreign languages. Senator/Astronaut John Glenn's Mother provided a "blurb" for the dust cover of one of her books.

The list of Phyllis C. Michael's accomplishments and honors continues to grow. Fort McClure is doubly pleased to honor this very special woman as she is a long-time member of our Chapter.
