My Truran Family Tree

My great great grandfather Richard Truran immigrated to the United States from Cornwall England in the 1850's.

Through the wonder of the internet I have recently been in contact with a sixth cousin living in the UK. She has done extensive research on the Truran name and family. We can now trace our heritage to the 1600's with Reginald Trewen and Hannah Stren. Some of what she has passed on to me:

"You will find that the name Truran can be spelt in numerous ways. The parish records in Cornwall contain many spellings. Nobody has agreed on the correct spelling. You would need to consider all name variants in your search. Literacy was a problem in the 19thC and no vicar ever spelt the same name in exactlly the same way

Truran
Trewren
Truen
Truan
Treuren
Trewen
Trewin
Truren
And so on.

The name should, according to the scholars , be spelt Trewren. It comes from the name Truro which is a large town, now a city in Eastern Cornwell, UK. Tre is the Celtic for three and Truro derives it's name from the rivers which pass through it's town. Wren means a white homestead by a marsh and Truro has marsh land adjacent to the three rivers (8thC). There is apparently a Truran coat of arms which contains three blobs of white."
