I adopted a son with RAD. He is now 8. I totally understand and feel for these families whose lives are touched by children with this terrible disorder.I wish there was some way I could help others who go through this. It is very supportive to me to be able to read other peoples stories and know that I am not alone. It gives me the energy to be able to keep on going on and to trust that this is not my fault.

We adopted our daughter 9 years ago, at the age of 3 1/2 through the foster care system. By the age of 5 she was diagnosed with RAD & ADD. It has been a long, hard life since then. My current issue to deal with is my extended family still does not understa d such a diagnosis or personality of this child, and accuses us of "not loving her and that if we don't love her and are so structured with her, that we have the potential to eventually abuse her" and that we "don't deserve to keep her in our home". They elieve that with only a saturation of 'love' the child will be 'fixed' and that it is 'our fault' that she is 'so messed up'. We are drained and discouraged, we are confused and brokenhearted, and feel as if we can't continue living with her at times. We eel that concentrating on her needs has taken so much away from our relationships and the needs of our other children, and strained relationships with 'sympathetic' extended family and neighbors who don't have a clue what we live with daily. I hope to vie your website at this time to find hope or new insights into this consuming situation we are living in, and to come to a conclusion as to whether we can continue with this relationship, as best we can, and try to raise our daughter to be the best she can e in this society. We are very oppressed right now.

This has been very helpful! I have a son age 12 with RAD and have had a lot of difficulty trying to find him the right treatment. There aren't treatment centers here in Iowa for RAD, and we have had much difficulty with funding for the out of state progra s. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Hi, We have had my grand daughter for 6 mths now...she was 22 mths when she came to live with us , reciently diagnosed with pts and rad discoative type, she acts out her abuse every night , is terrified to sleep and for the first 3 mths we did not have a nigh s sleep because of the night terrors and smearing poop from head to toe, she would not look in the mirror nor igknowledge her self, she injured herself many times daily and assulted us with no warning. we are certain without a dought that she was sexually abused as well as physically beaten.... Since a child is not born with these disorders is there a law that protects her,, ..like civil rights violited? Cps is involved as well as the courts and mental health theripests...all is documanted and with all this dad has stepped foward and wants her back and get this he has a free lawyer and can if he could follow through get visitation and coustdy....who pro ects these children!!!! As of yesterday she now has a lawyer..who will be forced to to only all within the law and can not guarntee us that there will never be visitations (although we all involved are sure and praying that dad can't follow through) but that should not be the case, dad and mom should loose all rights for the infliction of these disorders clear cut and dry!!!!Although cps took coustdy on an abdoment issue an not abuse, because the abuse was not adressed until we saw these behaviors, I don't believe that at this point that there are any abuse charges.. The wheels of justice grind slowley and not always in favor of the best interst of the child..after all once a POW is rescued from his captures no one meets and decides if he'll be forced to visit them or placed back with them................What then kin of a system do we here in America have for our next generation? oh well vented and asked so much needed questions, cindy

We are just learning what is wrong with our 14 year old foster son who has bounced out of over 20 homes - mostly because of tantrums. He is in a temporary group home because we were losing the battle, but we are still seeing him weekly and are not plannin to give up on him. Thanks for your site. I will refer to it often as we learn how to care for our son.

Although I have not had the time to fully investigate your site, it seems to be comprehensive. I will return to check it out more as time allows. We have a daughter that is RAD, I'm her 3rd mother and I believe her mother must have left her with different people for days at a time during the first 15 months of her life. She came to us at 2 1/2 yr. old, there have been problems all along. Mostly directed at me, for the longest time my husband blamed me and still does. This is not a good situation, I am just trying to hang in there until she turns 18, I will have hung in there at that time for 15 1/2 years. Then she will need to make other livin arrangements. This information has within the last few years been coming more available, hasn't made the job easier. Thanks for all the info. Elise B. Smith :-)

As a mother of three attachment disorder children, I have many experiences to share and would love to help anyone else going through what we have endured. We also need to educate the public about this problem, because we adoptive parents are too often co sidered the problem, especially at our schools. They just don't understand!!!!!!

I'm the parent of an adopted Romanian Daughter, with RAD as well as; SI, APD(auditory Processing Disorder), cognitive delays, expressive-receptive language delays and possibly other LD, as yet undiagnosed! I've learned all I could the first time I was t ld this child has Reactive Attachment Disorder. At first, my comment was "how long" and realized very quickly that this is something that is dealt with over a lifetime. It has been a very isolating experience, and has made me feel like a "BAD" parent at times.....I know it's not my fault nor my problem....but it doesn't change my desire or wish that it could be different for us and especially for my daughter. I'm really glad that there is more and more infor out there about this Disorder, because these children can appear to 'not have a problem' in the eyes of the unknowing. It's a good thing that you are here for those who don't know and are out there wonde ing what do I do next. We've been dealing with this for 7 1/2 years and we've definitely seen the ups and downs. It's a very cyclical pattern and is very exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Thank you!!
