Ben and Marilyn Morimoto have been owned by at least one Akita since 1988. "We waited about one and a half years to get our first Akita. She was bought as our beloved pet and it was her regal manner, beauty and family devotion which inevitably made us purchase another." Our quest for showing and breeding has developed ever so cautiously but our Akita population has grown by leaps and bounds. RanMor Akitas has had only four litters of puppies during this time; striving to develop a line/gene pool which will be used to breed for:
Temperament: is very important to us because foremost a puppy is a companion and beloved pet. Too much is seen and heard about people who have had to put their Akitas down because of related negative human to animal interactions. The liability a breeder has in these instances is not a small matter, to say nothing about the anguish the puppy buyer experiences. Temperament is probably 75% genetics with the environment having an influence as well. Since we frequently can not totally predict what our puppies may go through once they leave their "nest", let's try to control that 75% through good breeding practices. Type: runs a close second for us, as after all, your puppy must look 100 % Akita; as close to the standard as you can produce. When you walk into a show ring, or around the park, while others admire from afar, you want to hear the comment "now that is an Akita." Recently, we are hearing much about the 'Japanese Type' and the 'American Type', which is all good because the debate helps us define our beliefs clearer & may even move us off center and to clarify our product. But an Akita is an Akita, is an Akita (in our opinion) and you the buyer will purchase or produce what you like; this does not make it any less of an Akita. Ben and I (at this point) show and produce the American type and we remain happy and committed to this end. Soundness or type: type or soundness. Even many judges have the jury out on this age old debate. Did the chicken or egg come first? We believe that you define your type first than work on producing sound puppies. Once you have type the soundness issue becomes your top priority. We are going to stay within the line we have developed; using sound animals (and praying a lot) and we feel confident that our program will support our ideals. Flash: how many times have we all said "I want a flashy puppy?" Color, amount of white, pinto, etc, are the last consideration anyone should use in acquiring an Akita. Use the three of the aforementioned points and you will be happy with your animal. But 100% happy ????? Those of us who have tried to finish a "plain Jane" know the answer to that question.. To end this diatribe; Ben and I are here in Huntington Beach California working on stamping out a miniscule place in Akita history with our small breeding and showing program. Our dogs are OFA good, Normal CERF, Normal Thyroid. We are members of our local Akita club - Inland Empire Akita Club and the national parent organization - Akita Club of America. Marilyn is also on the National Show Committee. (please no complaints!) which works hard to bring Akita fanciers a bigger & better National Specialty Show. Want to join us.........
