Byrd had a partial laryngectomy on July 23, 1998 which was performed by her regular vet at the Centre Animal Hospital in State College, PA.. There was no noticeable improvement in her condition, so on July 27, 1998, a single
tie-back was performed by Dr. Neath at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Neath also "trimmed"   her soft pallet, because she found it was a little long and could also impair Byrd's breathing. She also said that scar    tissue had formed as a result of the partial laryngectomy, which is why there wasn't a noticeable improvement.
At 11PM on January 24, 1999, Byrd left us and is now waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge. Even though her heart was as strong as ever in the love that it held,  its physical strength continued to weaken. She died in my arms on the way to the Vet's office.

Byrd also suffered from a loud heart murmur, which made it even more difficult to diagnose the LP. Upon her initial  visit her lungs were filling with fluid and her heart was only working at 50%. At first she was treated for the heart    condition and when the breathing did not improve, further examination was warranted. I am so grateful to have a good vet that was able to properly diagnose her LP or I don't think Byrd would have made it for as long as she did.
