This is an update on Russell's surgery of Mid Nov.'99. 8 weeks postop and Russ is doing fine! Beathing well, able to go for walks on the beach, carry his tennis ball around and sleeps like a log! He can now tolerate indoor temperatures without a proble . We are so glad he had the surgery, as he seems to be so much happier now. It was well worth the first 4 weeks of anxiety that you go through while your pet is healing. Let's hope we get through the sumer okay. Russ now gets turkey hot dogs and americ n cheese for treats instead of biscuits and that's plenty OK with him!

My 12 year old yellow labrador retriever, female, was just diagnosed with LP. I'm exploring surgery options today. Apparently there are two different kinds of surgeries, the tie back technique which I found described so often at this web site, and anoth r, a "bite" technique where they remove pieces of the arytenoid cartilage rather than tying them back. Anyone have any experience with the "bite" technique as opposed to the "tie back?" Thanks all for a great web page, very helpful in this time of stres ! Keith Conant

Russell came home from surgery a day early, as they had a hard time keeping him quite. Postop care at home was scary, as he gagged & coughed so much. Eating was no problem, but he would cough alot after drinking. Had many sleepless nights on the couch ith him the first week home. On his recheck visit, he was put on additional 2 weeks of antibiotics, as he sounded wheezy-to prevent pneumonia. All that mucus was collecting in his lungs. He is now 4 weeks post surgery and is much better. The coughing as lessened & so has the gagging. He will still wake up occasionally gagging, but goes right back to sleep after he clears his throat. His breathing is so much better! No more heavy panting. He now sleeps indoors. Previously, he could not tolerate te peratures over 60 & prefered to spend the night in his dog house. He can now walk around the yard without having to lie down & rest. Hopefully, he will continue to improve. His nose seems to run more often, but I think its related to the throat irritat on and all the mucous it is producing. I hope this will lessen with time. He does seem much happier now.

Penny was operated on Dec. 7, 1999. She was first diagnosed with distemper when we got her from the shelter. The vet believes the partial paralysis she has was caused from damage by the distemper. She now is given a prognosis of "fair". Her lungs are illed with mucous from two different bacterias and we now have her home & are fighting the infection with two antibiotics. I thank you for the information you provided about this condition. It certainly helped me to understand.

Star started panting alot with heat & exercise last summer, this summer the hoarse panting was more constant. She doesn't cough. She does show nerve weakness in rear legs only after laying down along time, she's never dragged her back end & weakness dis apates quickly with walking. Took her to vet for diagnosis, I found more info via web sites. Chest x-rays show clear lungs, no obstruction in lower thorax. She doesn't have signs of thyroid problem but after reading all your surveys I'll have that test d ASAP. Last night was her worse episode inwhich she gasped for air about 6 hrs. She threw-up pale foamy mucus 3x. I talked with UC Davis. What I want more info on are the conditions that cause LP, besides thyroid problems. A vet student told me that disease causing LP and rear end nerve problems is easily diagnosed & treatable with rear leg nerve recovering & less often LP self correcting. The symptoms for that diseases' rear end nerve disorder was with exercise, not like my dogs. My next step is o find out what other diseases/problems LP is a symptom of. I'd rather not go the surgery route is it can be helped. The surgery cost here are $1200-$1400, that's without any asperation problems & without admitting her in an emergency type situation. L st night I struggled with the decision of taking her to Davis (on a weekend) to insure her ability to be able to breath until further diagnostic work & probable surgery could be done during the week, at an estimated cost of $2000. My initial feeling is W AT'S MONEY in comparison to her well being? I know atleast 3/4 of the reason to go to any lengths to save an almost 14 yr old dog who sight & hearing are pretty bad are selfish. I can't stand the thought of her leaving me. This morning she's better, not OK, but breathing calmly while sleeping. She's eating & drinking. I wonder if I would be a better person to let old sleeping dogs go & donate $1000 to a wildlife cause.

DID YOU TRY AND CONTROL IT WITH MEDICATIONS,
WHICH ONES, RESULTS?:
Russell is on 0.8 mg Thyroxine-L b.i.d. with good results per 6 mos. blood work. He was put on theophylline for "bronchitis" with no change in breathing symptoms.
WAS SURGERY PERFORMED, AT WHAT AGE,
TYPE, RESULTS?:
Yes, laryngeal lateralization-one side. Surgery done today & went well, but he's not cooperating per surgeon, as he keeps wagging his tail & barking at everyone that goes by-had to be heavily edated to keep him calm so he won't aspirate. Russ, this is where quiet dog overrides happy dog.
CURRENT CONDITIONS?: Just out of surgery, will be in hospital for 3-4 days. Russell's tendency to love everyone & get excited when he sees people will not be to his advantage during this critical postop time. How about a prayer for this very happ lab!

CURRENT CONDITIONS?: Worse since last winter/spring when we first began to notice the loud breathing

Comments:
My husband and I are trying to decide what our next steps are with Nikki, our 12 y.o. black lab. So far, we haven't had any scary episodes, but we do believe she is progressing. No exam of her throat has been done - diagnosis only based on symptoms repor ed and seen by the vet. Two possibilities were explained. The tie-back procedure and the perm. trach. The vet at U of IL recommended the trach because of the increased risk of aspiration in the tie-back, and the chance in an older dog that the cartileg would break when tied. Both options are a little scary to me. My husband and I do travel for antique shows, and it would be challenging for all of us, including Nikki, to have to go with to care for the trach. However, the description of the possible spiration with the tie-back was also pretty scary. The vet made it sound like we would want to be watching her every minute. The description of the lake activity in the Fun, Fun, Fun part of the website makes me think the vet might have been exagerratin a bit. I'd be interested in hearing from people who have had the tie-back procedure, or any other possible treatments and their reactions.

Folks were driving around with 4 pups(1mth.old,in their car trunk)and told us that their friends had too many and wanted to give these away for $20.00. The second day here, he started gagging and spitting up mucus in huge wads. Slowly the wheezing, gaggin and vomiting increased, especially when eating, active or excited. Both my son and I are guilt-ridden, afraid that we pulled him back too hard on the collar, even if it was not a choke. Also, you tell yourself that maybe he would have recovered from some unknown trauma, from some small piece of inhaled plastic or grown out of it, even though Dr. said that it would have been a lifetime of medical crisis, in spite of the fact that he performed no blood tests, no X-rays, no scope. Yesterday,''PAX''was wheezi g, gagging, playfully chasing his tail and watching me cook (he was still affectionate, playful, active and curious) - today, he is dead -and I am, here, wondering if the so-called ''congenetal - defect'' sounds like LP.

After getting a diagnoses that Nikki had LP I started searching everywhere to get info. I stumbled across this site and was so happy to find others who had this problem. I read everything and was encouraged enough to get the surgery. It was beginning the ummer and it was now or never. She was a good candidate for the surgery and we had it done about 2 months ago. She was lethargic for a couple of days and started feeling better after about a week. Her overall health is good, but she is gagging and coughin continuosly (she sounds like an extremely loud goose honking). We had the vet check her out twice and he prescribed three different medicines ( none of which worked ). At this point I am convinced the vet has no clue what to do for her. We are feeding h r twice a day and have her food raised. Basically, she is doing well except for the "honking" and gagging. It seems to be uncomfortable for her but not life threatening. We love her so much but we are at wits end. No one in my house has slept for two mont s because she "honks" so loud it keeps us up. Besides that she seems to get really agitated and unhappy that she continues to do it till I can calm her down. Please, Please, Please if anyone has any suggestions or ideas what can help let me know. I just w nt her to better and happy for the time she has left. Thanks.

Comments:
This is a wonderful Website. Thank you. Reading everyone's experiences both cautioned me and taught me more about the problem and helped me get started. Trendy diagnosed with LP about five weeks ago; surgery scheduled last week and then I delayed it. Problem started at least one year ago with hoarseness after intubation for dental surgery; dog has always hacked and coughed, but got much worse aftger that intubation experience. He also always pulled hard on his choke collar -- now in harness. He rem ins strong, alert, with good posture and extension even after labored breathing after too long walks in the heat. He is also being kept cool, which he and the other three standards love in this desert heat. The reason I delayed LP surgery: aging humans ith hypothyroid can also get LP. With appropriate thyroid replacement therapy, sometimes laryngeal nerve response returns, usually about 6 - 9 weeks post treatment. I had Trendy tested, and his thryoid production was low normal; decided to go ahead wi h thyroxin, though still consulting with vet to figure if that is the problem, and if so, what a therapeutic dose is. We will review next week his history of thyroid tests to see how to proceed. I am also planning a consultation with a small animal neur logist, either locally or at Davis Vetrinary School. Trendy was also overweight, so we are addressing that issue. I hate to put him through surgery, but he has no other health problems at this point, and his mother in Sweden is still alive and very wel at 16. Would love to hear if anyone has been able to resolve this problem without surgery. Thank you.

My Lucy is sleeping downstairs this afternoon after four days at the veterinary hospital. What was diagnosed initially as a growth on the larnyx turned out to be LP which was a relief with the history of thyroid problems with Lucy and thyroid cancer with one of her puppies. Surgery went well. Side affects are a bit of coughing which I understand will be temporary.(or so we hope) 2 to 3 weeks recovery is what I was advised and keep her out of the heat! Lucy has been more of a lap dog the last two to three years. At least we will be able to enjoy her a few years longer. The earlier prognosis was quite questionnable. Thanks to all those who have contributed to this survey with their experiences. It helped and reassured me as I was entering this unknown problem. Best wishes to every other owner of a beloved Canine with LP. Scott Pierce

Comments:
About a year ago, we noticed Penny breathing loudly upon exertion, such as walks. Her breathing became progressively worse during walks and sometimes she would take a big gasp as if trying to clear her throat. We also noticed that during the warm weathe in the spring of this year (99) her breathing became loud, much like during the walks, and she had slowed down considerably. Memorial Day weekend, she suffered staggering and overall weakness in her hind legs which resulted in a trip to the emergency ve where she was initially diagnosed with LP. We subsequently visited our regular vet. He scoped her and confirmed the LP diagnosis. His recommendation was unilateral tieback surgery, which was performed yesterday, 7/13/99. Although I initially felt we ere well informed about the procedure, I was unprepared for the apparent long term prognosis. Prior to the surgery we were advised the risk of aspiration and resulting pneumonia were said to be limited by the unilateral tieback procedure. However, we no have been told, by a different vet, the risk of aspiration could last a lifetime. This new revelation has lead to a whole new list of questions for which there seems to be ambiguous answers at best. Some of my questions, to date, are: When is the risk of aspiration no longer a concern? How soon after the surgery do they start aspirating? Do you feed less food more frequently to try and limit the aspiration? If they don't aspirate within 2-3 weeks of the surgery is there still the risk of aspiration? I have read all of the survey responses and, although very informative, I did not find the answers to these questions. Any information would be most helpful. Thanks.

She is under vet supervision for her LP and when necessary vet will operate. In the meantime we have restricted heavy activity and are protecting her from extreme heat. I would say the operation will be necessary within the next year at her current rate of deterioration. She is healthy and active in all regards besides her LP, except for a suspicious mass detected by x-ray in her thoracic cavity. Blo

Max did not have an LP problem until after his first total ablation and bulla osteotomy surgery. At first, we thought it was a post-op cough then we thought it might be kennel cough. After a trip back to the surgeon, a larngoscopy revealed right-sided par lysis with left arytenoid movement minimal. The surgeon said we had three choices, a tie-back, do nothing or put him to sleep. The last choice was not a consideration. We tried many medications, nothing helped his cough/gagging. Five months later, Max had his second ablation, but this time we took him to North Carolina State University. They also planned to do the tie-back, but decided against it. They thought it was cause more problems than it helped. Several months later, it was suggested by a cyber vet to try phenobarb. At last something worked. Max takes 1/2 a grain once a day. Although we have no proof, we think sometime during the first ablation, Max suffered a hyperextension injury as they were positioning his head for surgery. He had no coughing or gagging until then, but since the first laryngoscopy was performed after the ablation...we have no proof. As such, the first surgeon did not admit to any responsibility. Max's condition, we think (and hope) is non-progressive, since it was caused by an injury. His problem does not seem to change much year to year...just coughing and gagging, some days he coughs quite a bit, other days, very little. I am so happy to have found this site several months ago. For so long, I thought we were they only ones with this problem. I have learned so much from everyone here. Thank you!

Cassie has started acupuncture treatments. LP responds to acupuncture in only 40-60% of cases. Initally acupuncture is performed once weekly for 8-12 weeks. If a positive response is obtained then usually monthly treatments are necessary to maintain the reduction of symptoms. For comparison, >90% cases of arthritis show some response after the 2nd or 3rd treatment and only need maintenance treatments every 2-6 months, according to the veterinary acupuncturists that I have consulted) Cassie has just had her second treatment so we don't yet know if she will respond, but we are hopeful. She is still only mildly affected, but we would like to at least slow the progression if possible. I'll post again after the initial series of acupu cture treatments.

I believe that O'Keeffe developed LP as a result of trauma inflicted by an over enthusiastic and out of control 10 month old St. Bernard puppy. When she was 12, the St. Bernard clipped her under her chin and sent her head over heels. The vets I have dis ussed her case with have not been convinced that this caused it. All I can say is that the day before the trauma, she was barking normally and the day after, she was hoarse. Noticing her hoarseness, I immediately took her to the NCSU Vet School (my normal vet) where they diagnosed her correctly. She had a very mild case of it, only slowly down a little in her activities.... no wheezing, coughing, etc. In recent months (she' now 14.5), she has started coughing a lot when she's hanging around the house but not when she's exercising. I suspect mucous, but don't know what to do about it. I tried Benedryl briefly, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Nothing was ever pros ribed or suggested by the Vet. She doesn't need surgery at the present time. Any suggestions or comments are welcome..

She was just diagnosed with bilateral laryngeal paralysis, pectus excovatum, and mega esophagus. (spelling) I'd say it's more than just a malformation in her voice box. I am not very happy and am waiting for the Doctors who just saw her to do some more research to s e what can be done for her. They said they are simply amazed that she has done so well for this long. Needless to say I am going to contact the breeder. I would like to get a refund so I can afford some kind of treatment for Freya.

We are still undergoing the process of diagnosis. It's been very frightening for us, and we desperately covet your prayers for correct, safe and timely treatment. I fear that I may one day awake to a dead dog. :( Her history is as follows and really spans many years, with very slowly increasing symptoms: To start with, we have 3 parrots who are total slobs and constantly throwing their food out of their cage. Jazz literally begs from them and vacuumes it up, the little hoover that she is! :) We thought all of this coughing (it's so sporadic)was related to having little bits of bird food stuck in her throat. She also coughs when she's been barking intensely such as when someone comes to the door. We thought she wa just somehow straining her voice...We also thought that her life-long heat intolerance was just due to her being a brachiocepahlic breed, (she had a mild case of heat stroke during a summer training class when she was 4 years old). She has always been a ad surgical risk due to slow recovery times and significant hypothermia. It seems now, that these are probably all closely interrelated and I'm feeling so guilty for missing it, especially since I'm a vet tech! (I tend to worry about her so much that pe haps I have talked myself out of their severity...?) I’m addmittedly co-depentant to my dog! She saved my life and I owe everything to her! On 2/5/99, during a pre-surgical exam prior to the removal of some small but changing, sub-Q tumors right over her jugular area, her vet found a new and < grade one (?) heart murmur. (He is very good, and for the reason, he’s been THE only one I will see ) During that weekend, after running on Sunday afternoon, she had a rear-quarter collapsing incident in the middle of the night that scared the pant off of me and her as well! I though she had somehow blown a disk or something while running earlier in the ay, and envisioned taking her in daily for the following 10 days for Palosein injections, etc, so wanting to act immediately if it were a neuro injury, I gave her the pred from her bee sting kit, knowing that it couldn't hurt. (Which curiouly enough, rem nds me, that she almost died once from a bee sting back in 1991 because her throat swelled shut **(LP?)!) With the pred, she was dramatically improved by morning and was alomost normal! :) Could the pred have temporarily treated the LP and reversed the subsequent RQ muscle weakness? She did also seem to have injured her RR stifle (ACL?)and still continued to limp on it for about a week afterward, but the RQ deficit was gone! I think I have noticed it returning to a milder degree, now that the pred is out of her system, and it does seem worse at night when she has been sound alseep and then stirs to turns or change positions. (She does have moderate to severe lumbosacral disease but has bee regularly seeing a Vet. Chiro. :) No more noctural urine leaking !! :) Yeah!!! :D She subesquently had rads (very good) and an echo on 2/9/99 which revealed very mild dilative cardiomyopathy, and she was placed on Enacard, 10 mg BID, along with L- Carnitine and CoQ10. She has since seemed very depressed (literally sad (?)) [on the Enac rd specifically which wasn't started until 2/19] and also much more symptomatic since starting this medication! Last night we made a very frightening trip the emergency vet due to bradycardia (HR 40-60!)and an unproductive mild cough. The vet there sugg sted we stop the enacard immediately and get a second opinion looking specifically for LP. (Chest rads were very clear:) So, that's where we are right now. I am so afraid of the prospect of any surgery for her, *but especially now* that she has this underlying heart disease. ****Does anyone know if LP can actually CAUSE dilated cardiomyopathy due to cardiac cell death from anoxia or for asome other reason and exactly what their relation is? Are they frequently confused in cases like this? Where can I go to find out more???? Again, I am a vet tech if this helps anyone, so feel free to can get technical with me but admitte ly, I'm no cardiologist ;) She was scheduled for an ECG with our vet tomorrow, (3/1/99), but plans have changed and now I'm just going to make an appt for her with Dr. Luthey here in Chicago. Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated! Hugs and slo py, sneezy, wet boxer kisses from Jazz!:) AKA the Big Kitty! >^..^< & from Rita, her worried Mommy too! :)

Has a great appetite and has no problem eating or drinking. Still smiles !! Chews her bones an welcomes anyone that comes. Can't bark anymore. She hasn't tried for a while.

Comments:
I didn't realise LP was so devastating. We had gone to the Neurologist for her lameness and hanging neck. He was asking about her general health and I said she has been very healthy up to now but did sound like a steam train. He asked more questions and f lt her and said she had LP and that older dogs got it. I had never heard of it. He also found her left back leg had nerological damage- it didn't turn back quickly. She shows no sign of it being a problem. He said she could have had a stroke but he could 't connect any of her problems. They were on different sides. She had large litters of puppies, has a good coat and has had no health problems up to now. She has her Ch.,OTCh.,and WC. She has been involved in agility and flyball so has been a very active irl.

Comments:
Looking back now, I can recall that Chip began showing symptoms almost two years ago. He would drag behind when we went out for walks and had a distinct roaring sound to his breathing which we attributed to his age and weight problem. In October of this ear, he had a real crisis in his breathing and we took him to ISU where he was diagnosed with LP. We tried all other methods to avoid surgery because we feared, since he also had weakness in his hind legs, that he might not be able to survive surgery. H wever, after three very difficult days for him, we decided we didn't have any other options. He came through the surgery well and came home five days post-op. His legs appear to be much stronger and he is eating and drinking with no difficulty. He does have an occasional slight cough but the doctors assured me this is to be expected.

I am fortunate have worked as a veterinary nurse for 10 years, (including about 2 years at Angell Memorial), so I noticed a subtle change in the sound of my dog's breathing a few months ago and was able to get a diagnosis early in the progression of LP. anticipate having surgery performed when Cassie's clinical condition affects her exercise tolerance. Although her back legs are unstable at times, she does run a little, chase her bu per and plays keep-away with her bed. This LP List is similar to an encyclopedia, where there is a wealth of knowledge; however, also come prayers, best wishes, thoughts, slurps, crossed paws, tail wags, encouraging words, etc. It was only because of the LP Listers' advice (mainly "Do not w it ....."), that we went ahead with her operation without further procrastination. After surgery we were given suggestions as to postsurgical methods, eating and drinking, what to expect with panting, and even a recipe for Doris' chicken pops. A prayer age was developed for those LP's, who need extra comforting thoughts. Thank you Doris and everyone. God Bless.

Surgery through the throat (where they cut excess tissue), not the tieback type
CURRENT CONDITIONS?: Didn't make it

Comments:
Bingo had 1st episode of LP this summer-age 14-he had a major seizure (never had one before), unable to breath his temp was over 105, and he was turning purple. Vet was able to save him, and discussed options. We put him on Rimadyl for arthritis, that ca help LP as well. He had an additional seizure, without LP, so started seizure medicine which took care of the seizures. Had another LP epidose when he got excited (but no seizure), so decided to go forward with the surgery (the type through the throat, not tieback). He had surgery 11/4/98, and seemed to be doing well after his surgery. A few hours later however, his throat swelled too much, his heartbeat was racing, temp was 105. Vet tried different things to control swelling, and was sedated. Condi ion worsened through the night, and at 2:00 am we had to make the awful decision to not have him suffer anymore. We were able to hold him when he was put to sleep, and he was surrounded by his toys and family. Bingo gave us 14 great years!! He is missed! br>

My nephew says when he dies, if he comes back, he wants to come back as my dog. Willie sits here looking at me with those big brown eyes wondering where his breakfast is. We will be leaving for the surgeon in a few minutes, so he can't have anything to eat. We live in Georgia on a 15 acre farm, and this morning Willie and I took a walk in the woods so he could scope out the deer trails before going to the surgeon. I feel as if I am betraying the trust he has in me. Thank you all so much for accepting me into the group, and I hope all is going wonderfully well with your babies. I brought this to the attention of our vet, hen it first occured, but he did not feel that Rusy was experiencing anything unusual. Because his syptoms became more severe, we went to a specialist who scoped him and confirmed LP. He feels that there might be a connection between the LP and his Hers rung's Disease. He had surgery today, because his condition was considered serious and potentially fatal. So far he is recovering. I am greatful for this page.

My vet told me after the surgery that he was surprised that he could get any air at all due to the paralysis and the collapse of the arytenoidal cartilage. If needed I will update m answers when I have had more time to evaluate how Josiah comes along from the surgery. I was instructed to keep him quiet and restrained for 10 days following the surgery. Shorty first started showing symptoms at 10 1/2. At this time, she had a torn cruciate ligament and the panting was attributed to pain from the knee. After surgery symptoms did not ease and got worse in the summer. That is when LP was correctly diagnosed We have been unable to do surgery because of impaired liver function. Her littermate Cita died from misdiagnosed LP. She was given heart drugs and later autoimmune disease drugs which allowed a secondary infection to kill her. Their mother also pante heavily but it was attributed to a spinal tumor causing pain. Suspect it also could have been LP.

He is currently on 0.6mg soloxine 2x daily. His attitude has improved immensely. Acts like a puppy now. We are watching for breathing difficulties, but so far, he is only exhibiting raspy bark. i had never heard of this disease, until Buster couldn't breath one night, and our vet had to preform emergency surgery. Why should he have had his thyroid tested?

We went to our vet concerned about this coughing sound Molly'd make sometimes when panting hard. She shows no signs of distress when this happens. Vet got her to make the sound and suggested it might be LP. Molly's pretty excitable and I used to use a pro g collar on her. Vet thought the collar might have done the damage. She put her under and looked at larynx, said both sides were severely impaired and said we'd have to get the surgery done before summer. I did a bit of research and consulted with Tufts V t School. Dr. Murtaugh there was highly suspicious of an LP diagnosis in such a young dog and said there could be lots of other things wrong (he also completely discounted collar-damage theory). He agreed with me that since she doesn't seem to be any dist ess whatsoever, that it would not be wise to have her undergo any surgery but that we should keep an eye on it and have her checked out by someone experienced in treating LP if condition becomes worse. So, now we just watch her carefully for signs of diff cult breathing and pray...

No Definite DX of LP, but symptom indicate it might be. Plan now is to keep bitch from stress, removed collar, raised food dish. No vet in area to do surgery, bitch becomes very stressed and hyperventilates when driving.

Comments:
We are so happy with Cayman's post op recovery from single tie back surgery which was perfored 8/31/98. She is like a different dog. It has taken a while to get her back on a schedule for eating and we are feeding her more often to help with the mucous accumulation. She still drinks water a little fast, so we either try to stop her mid drink to take a breath, or she "hacks" and clears the water from her throat herself. It doesn't come back up like it did immediately after surgery. With her fur growin back rapidly, she looks great and we love the "quiet" dog we now have. No loud breathing or coughing. However, the lack of bark is something we are still getting used to.

Comments:
Beauty is just beginning with the symptoms. My vet noticed the condition without even me bringing it up to her. We were in for something else, and began talking about another dog (a rescue) when suddenly she said I think Beauty has LP. She walked over and began examining her more closely immediately. I later left her in while on a trip, told them if necessary they could do up to $150 of tests while I was gone, including the thyroid test. I Believe she decided the thyroid was not necessary, and did x-rays of the throat. Her muscles are obviously sagg ng INTO her throat. ALso, my vet said MOST vets aren't sure if that's LP or not, but she says in bigger dogs it seems to be following a pattern,,, that the x-rays show the muscles sagging, looking more U shaped instead of normal 0 shape. It IS quite obv ous on the x-rays, even I can see it. Also curious about people's use of the choke/training collar. My response on that is on the mailing list.

yes, 11 1/2 yrs, LP diagnosed by referred specialist, through the mouth surgery, prelim. results great, but panting again
CURRENT CONDITIONS?: to be evaluated again on Oct 1st--to be scoped again

Comments:
Biscuit is much better than before she had her LP surgery. However, due to an increasing panting problem, we feel we are not yet out of the woods. She will be evaluated again at appt. on Oct 1st. This group of exceptional dog owners has been such a comfort to us. I doubt we would have had the courage to go forward with Biscuit's surgery (and possibly another one) if it hadn't been for the people here. We can make much better decisions if we are informed...and others knowledge and experiences help so very much. We are so grateful to everyone here......

At 14.3 years of age, Sandy is doing better than she was a year and a half before surgery! She had no complications from her surgery and is living a full life, which includes traveling, going for walks, swimming and retrieving. Yes--Hycodan, Cortisone, Benedryl--Yes, for a short while

Yes---Double tieback, cartilage excision
CURRENT CONDITIONS?: Doing GREAT!!!

Comments:
Kansas went in for a single tieback but she was a rare exception and developed severe complictions the day after surgery. The surgeon had to perform a tracheostomey and then tied back the 2nd laryngeal fold, removed her vocal folds and removed as much cartilage as he dared. We came very close to losing her. The skilled hands of the vet brought her back to us and now, almost 5 months post-op, she is acting like a pup again.
