SALUKI: A graceful, beautiful sight hound, the saluki's ancestry dates back
possibly to 7000 B.C. Tomb carvings of Sumeria and Egypt show this tall
Greyhound (dogs, 23 to 28 inches), with feathered ears, legs, and tail,
almost exactly as it looks today. Coveted by Arab sheiks, the Saluki was
bred and trained to work with falcons in hunting gazelle. The present-
day standard dictates that the Saluki must give an impression of possess-
ing the speed and endurance necessary to bring down and kill a gazelle.
In England the saluki courses hares and races for the mechanical rabbit
at dog tracks. It's soft, silky coat can be black and tan, cream, fawn,
golden, grizzle and tan, or tricolor (white, black, and tan), or white. In
the United States a smooth variation without feathering is recognized. A
devoted companion, the dog is affectionate, dignified, unaggressive, and
extremely sensitive.
