Intimate secrets

When the raindrops whisper our intimate secrets
and fall to earth on invisible wings
they remind me of the phantom days
when you and I gave freeplay to our dreams.

I find myself thinking of the
"what might have been,"
if only the days that use to be
had held on a little tighter to you and to me.

The days before our hearts entered their wilting season
and love was more than a waning specter in the night.
When we loved, not with reason,
but loved with all our might.

I know that memories are selective
and that my soul still grieves
for red mountain raspberries, honeysuckle vines
and a bouquet of kisses under autumn's falling leaves.

Why when the raindrops trace
your pattern once again upon my face,
can I not enfold you within loves tender embrace,
and all our hurts gently erase.

I want us to come forth from the invisible wings,
and quit hiding in the loneliness that heartbreak brings.
