The Archivist of the Society is required to retain custody of the all official documents relating to the incorporation of the Society and to receive, house, and to make available to researchers all genealogical donations.

One source of genealogical information of interest to researchers, is the large collection of newsletters housed in the S.C.G.S. Archives. Chapters of the S.C.G.S. are asked to put a copy of each newsletter published into our collection. These newsletters and journals contain a wide variety of genealogical abstracts from all areas of the state. Most newsletters also contain queries from researchers interested in South Carolina genealogy. Back issues of the CAROLINA HERALD are also housed in the S.C.G.S. Archives.

A wide variety of published family histories are also available at the S.C.G.S. Archives. Recent acquisitions into the collection include: FREDERICK BROCK, 1719-1807, HIS AMERICAN FAMILY; THE LADSON FAMILY OF S.C. AND GEORGIA, 1678-1900; GLENN AND KINN; LIFE AND TIMES OF REV. JOHN G. LANDRUM; DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM OF FANQUIER CO., VA AND GREENVILLE CO., SC; OUR ALL SOUTHERN FAMILY (Barfield, Barnett, Bayne, and Gresham Families); NATHANIEL BUTLER BANKS AND ANNA BARBARA ARTMAN; WYATT HALL OF EDGEFIELD CO., SC; ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF HANCOCK D. SUDDATH AND JEMIMA WHALEY ETHEREDGE; CLARK FAMILY HISTORY; CROMER FAMILY; MAULDIN-REED FAMILIES; THE SC BROWNLEES; JACKSONS OF NORTH PACOLET: DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL JACKSON, SR.; and THE FAMILY AND DESCENDANTS OF JONATHAN NEWMAN.

A budget was recently approved by the S.C.G.S. Board of Directors for the operation of the Archives. This budget will be used to better store and make available the various research materials in the S.C.G.S. Archives. Genealogical materials housed in the S.C.G.S. Archives are available during the hours the Hartsville Genealogical Research Library is open. Currently these hours are: Mondays, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.; Fridays, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., and Sundays, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Research Library is closed most holidays. Donations of family histories and genealogies, abstracts of state and county records, county histories and local history, church histories, etc. are gladly accepted. All donations should be mailed to: S.C.G.S. Archivist, P.O. Box 492, Columbia, SC 29202.
