GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION LIST

Everyone who participates in the email list must adhere to a few simple guidelines - no flaming, no spamming, and no off-topic posts. The sole purpose of the list is to discuss housing issues as they apply to people with autism. Feel free to express your ideas, concerns, experiences, etc., pertaining to housing needs and/or planning for the future to meet those needs. Some examples of topics that would be considered relelvant are: group homes, homesharing, co-housing, intentional communities, homeownership, live-in caregivers, etc. It's not enough to just talk about various housing alternatives - there also must be ways to finance such projects. So, other issues become relevant, such as: grants, formation of non-profit corporations, wills, trusts, guardianship, SSI, medicaid, waivered services, etc. Day programs and respite care also go hand-in-hand with planning for living arrangements of autistic people. These suggestions are provided as an example of some of the topics that would be acceptable, but is not intended to be an exhaustive list.

This list is NOT for general autism discussions, treatment methods, school issues (except possibly residential schools), parenting techniques, and most casual chit-chat. Those would be considered "off-topic". This list isn't intended to be "all things to all people". There are many other lists available for the discussion of issues that are considered "off-topic" for this list.

Also, please do not send mail to the list that is intended for just one individual. Some folks can't handle a lot of mail so we need to keep the volume down to just relevant posts. All members must treat one another with respect even when there is a difference in opinion. If members can't agree to disagree, then the subject should be dropped.

Use the following address to send mail to the list - AutismCommunity@onelist.com

You must use the same address that you used when you signed up for the list, otherwise your post will bounce.

By joining the list, you will receive a free listing in our Member Directory. You can email your bio to me to be included on the Member's page. Please use "Autism Community Bio" as the subject line. Each member can have a photo of their autisitc child listed with their bio. I will scan one photo for each member who wants to be listed and doesn't have an image that I can download from the Internet. If you already have a webpage with photos, please send me the URL to one photo that you want displayed in the directory. I will copy it & upload it to my server. Please do not email attachments.

You can sign-up anywhere you see the "Join List" button. (If you already signed up on the home page, there's no need to sign up here, too.) After you enter your email address into the queue, please send me a brief email stating why you would like to join the list & how you found out about it. Upon approval of your subscription, you'll receive a "Welcome" message. Please read it and save it for future reference.

Once you become a subscriber, you will be able to change your subscription options between digest, mail and no-mail from the One List website. You can also unsubscribe from their webpage. These instructions are included at the end of each post that is sent to the list.

You can view the old (8/98-1/99) Autism Community Mailing List Archive, if you wish, before joining.

Please Note: If your mailbox becomes full resulting in bounced mail, or if your mail bounces for any other reason, the listserv will automatically remove your name from the mailing list & you will have to sign up again.
