Charles Marvin Miller

Marvin Miller, died 12-02-1977. Services for Marvin Miller, 79, of Fieldon were held this afternoon, December 5, at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Dorcie Hill. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He died at 5:10 pm on December 2 a Jersey Community Hospital. A machinist in ammunition production, he was born may 14, 1898 in Missouri, a son of William and Emma Bunch Miller.

His survivors are his wife, the former Ruea Evans; four Sons, Earsie L. Miller of Fieldon, Dallas D., Carl D., and Ira W. Miller, all of Jerseyville; three daughters; Mrs. Floyd (Marie) McIntire, Grafton, Mrs. Leroy (Irene) Wells, Bloomington and Mrs. Steve (Margaret) Evancho, Jerseyville, 59 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. One brother, Clark Miller, Jerseyville and a sister, Lula Short of St. Louis. Two sons, Leo and Loya, preceded him in death. The family designates the heart fund as . . . rest if obit missing.

Marvin Miller's wife - Ruea (Evans) Miller, 89, died at 3:20 am. today, November 13, 1987 at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born in Missouri, a daughter of the late James and Margaret (Brakefield) Evans. On September 19, 1917 she married C. Marvin Miller in Missouri. He died December 2, 1977.

Surviving are four sons, Earsie Miller of Fieldon, Dallas and Carl Miller, both of Delhi, and ira Miller of Jerseyville; three daughters Dolly McIntire and Margaret Evancho, both of Jerseyville, and Irene wells of Bloomington; 56 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carrie Wilkinson. Two sons preceded her in death, Leo and Loy Miller. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Saturday With services at 1 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Burial will be in Fieldon cemetery, and memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

(1) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's daughter - Dollie Marie McIntire, 79, formerly of Jerseyville and Godfrey, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Alton Memorial Hospital, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family, after entering a peaceful rest. She was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Enough, Mo., to Charles Marvin and Reau (Evans) Miller. She married Floyd A. McIntire on Aug. 2, 1944, in Jerseyville. He died Feb. 21, 1990. A loving and devoted wife and mother, she was homemaker and farmer and leaves behind many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will cherish her memory. Her legacy is her faith in God and devotion to her children.

Surviving are 12 children and their spouses, Lloyd and Denise McIntire of Jackson, Mich., Barbara and John Wiley of Godfrey, Joan McIntire of Albany, Mo., Pat and Joe VanWalleghen of O'Fallon, Mo., Sandy Compton of Alton, Dollie and John Klaas of Kane, Pearl and Terry Fester of Dow, Bessie Walker of Alton, Raymond and Kandy McIntire of Bethalto, Mary J. Johnson of Godfrey, Betty Finch of Wood River and Virginia and Paul Ward of Jerseyville; 34 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren, with whom she played a vital role in their lives; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Steve Evancho of Godfrey; and a brother, Dallas Delmar Miller of Delhi.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet; a stepdaughter, June Hayes; a son-in-law, George Johnson; two grandsons, Shannon and Darrell Johnson; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Irene Wells; and five brothers, Carl "Eddie" Miller, Ira "Bill" Miller, Earsie Miller, Loya Miller and an infant. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Wilbur Cain will officiate. Interment will be beside her husband of 45 years and infant daughter at Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be given to a church of the donor's choice.

(Note: Dollie Marie (Miller) McIntire's daughter Virginia (Griffin) Ward is a daughter from a previous marriage to Harold Griffin. Virginia (Griffin) Ward's father Harold Griffin was my late cousin. He was the son of Wesley and Anna (Westfall) Griffin. Anna (Westfall) Griffin was my father Walter Edward "Ed" Westfall's sister.) Virginia's father Harold Wesley Griffin was born Oct. 7, 1924 in Otterville, Jersey County, IL and died June 17, 2002 in Coupeville, Washington. He married Wilma Irene Talley 7-21-1949 in Jersey County, IL. She was the daughter of George and Gertrude (Parker) Talley. Wilma was born July 31, 1930 (died 3-4-91 age 60 of breast cancer), and they had 4 children-Ronald Griffin, David Griffin, Rosemary Griffin, and Mitchell Griffin.

Virginia (Griffin) Ward is married to Paul V. Ward and they live near Jerseyville, IL. Paul and Virginia (Griffin) Ward have 3 children-Marty Ward, Bonnie Ward who married Mark Helfer, the son Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Helfer of Delhi, IL, and Anna Ward.

(2) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's son - Earsie L. Miller, 84, died at 5:35 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1917, in Enoch, Mo., to Marvin C. and Ruea (Evans) Miller. He married Hazel M. (Seeman) Miller on Nov. 17, 1945, in Pocahontas, Ark. She died Jan. 24, 1985. A U.S. Army World War II veteran, he was employed as a carpenter. He was a past member of the Laborers Union and the Jerseyville American Legion.

Surviving are five sons, Dennis Miller of Fieldon, Douglas L. Miller of Jerseyville, Earsie D. Miller of Hardin, Jeff Miller of Fieldon and Herb Miller of Missouri; three daughters, Betty Miller and Debra Wyhs, both of Raymond, Ill., and Melissa Hill of Chesterfield, Ill.; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie McIntyre and Margaret Evancho, both of Godfrey; and two brothers, Dallas and Carl Miller, both of Delhi. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Forrest William Miller; three brothers, Ira and Loy Miller and an infant; and a sister, Irene Wells.

Visitation was from 4 to 9 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home (Jacoby Chapel) in Jerseyville, where services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Martha Horrell officiated. Burial was at Fieldon Cemetery, with military rites by the Jerseyville American Legion. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Earsie L. Miller's wife - Hazel M. (Seeman) Miller, died 01-24-1985. Services for Hazel M. Miller, 60, R. 1, Fieldon were conducted Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home by the Rev. Clyde Shaw with burial at Fieldon cemetery. She died at 6:30 pm January 24 at Christian hospital northeast. She was born March 2, 1924 in Greene County to the late Merle and Agnes Ontis Seeman. Surviving are her husband, Earsie whom she married November 17, 1945; sons, Dennis, Douglas, Earsie D., all of Jerseyville, Jeff and Herb of Fieldon; daughters, Betty Miller, Debbie Wyhs and Melissa K. Miller, Fieldon; a half sister, Katie Scherret, Flint, Michigan and 11 grandchildren.

(3) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's son - Dallas Delmar Miller, 76, died at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born in Washington County, Mo., on March 19, 1929, the son of the late Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller. He married the former Lily Mae Andrews on Oct. 26, 1951, in Hardin, and they shared nearly 50 years together before her death on March 2, 2001. As a young boy, his family moved to Jersey County, and he has been a resident there for his entire life. Shortly after his marriage, he served with the U.S. Army overseas during the Korean War, and after discharge, soon became employed with Olin Corporation, where he worked in shipping as well as a forklift operator for 31 years, before retiring in 1985. In his spare time, Delmar loved to be outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or in his healthier days, being in the woods cutting timber.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Donald Duane Ferguson Sr. of New Delhi; three grandsons, Dallas Ferguson and his wife, Patches, Donald Duane Ferguson Jr. and Michael Andrew Ferguson, all of New Delhi; a great-granddaughter, Brittney Anne Ferguson; and a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Steve Evancho of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Pamela and Peggy; two sisters, Opal Irene Wells and Dollie McIntire; and five brothers, Carl Edward, Ira "Bill," Loy, Earsie, and an infant, Leo Miller. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Clyde Shaw will officiate. Burial will be at Rosedale Cemetery, where the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 will conduct military rites. Memorials may be given to the Rosedale Cemetery.

(4) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's son - Carl Dale Edward "Ed" Miller, 67, died unexpectedly at 7:27 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at his home after several weeks of failing health. He was born April 8, 1936, in Sullivan, Mo., one of nine children of Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller. The U.S. Army veteran was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for many years working for several companies, driving throughout the country. However, when the opportunity presented itself, he began a truly enjoyable experience working alongside his daughter and son-in-law at Len's Towing, where he continued to assist until recently. He married the former Gail L. Gray on Oct. 25, 1958, in Elsah. She survives.

Also surviving are four children and their spouses, Carla and Robert Lindley Jr. of Bethalto and David and Janet Miller, Sue and Bob Stilts and Stacey and Steve Wock, all of Jerseyville; as the founder of the "Grandpa Club", seven grandchildren, Heather and Megan Miller, Bradley, Brandon and Kaitlyn Wock and Matthew and Ryan Lindley; a brother, Dallas Miller of Delhi; and two sisters, Marie McIntyre of O'Fallon, Mo., and Margaret Evancho of Godfrey. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Wells; and four brothers, Ira "Bill," Loya and Earsie Miller and an infant.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home (Jacoby Chapel) in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. John Gibson will officiate. He will be buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville with military honors provided by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528. Memorials may be given to the Victory Baptist Church in Jerseyville, where he was a member, or to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed and always remembered.

(9) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's daughter Margaret Miller married Steve E. Evancho 1-17-1959 in Jersey County, IL. They live in Godfrey, IL.

(9) Charles Marvin and Ruea (Evans) Miller's son Loya Miller. Died 00-03-1970. The death of Loya Miller, 48, of Frankfort, Missouri, in a crawler tractor accident Friday morning on the farm of Becker brothers in English township was the second tragic event to occur in the Miller family within a few days time. Miller's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Miller of Fieldon are the great grandparents of Shannon Lee and Darrell Edward, 3 and 1 year old sons of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson of Jerseyville, who lost their lives in the destruction by fire of the family home on February 23. Miller, father of twelve, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jersey Community hospital at ten fifty-five o'clock am. The Missouri man, formerly of Jersey County, had been operating a crawler tractor pushing a tree out of a ditch. According to reports, a limb of the tree struck Miller inflicting fatal injuries. An inquest will be held later by coroner Rodney Jacoby.

Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers Chapel where services were conducted at one-thirty o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. Dorcie Hill. Burial was in the Fieldon cemetery. Mr. Miller was born in Missouri, may 31, 1921, and was a carpenter by trade. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Madge B. Ridenour Miller; six sons, Marvin, Edward, Mark, and Paul Miller of Frankfort, Charles Miller of Louisiana, Missouri and Elmer Miller of Darby, Montana; six daughters; Mrs. Darrell Krauss of O'fallon, Missouri. - rest of obit missing (continued on page 3a in paper).

John Alben was born in Italy. He immigrated to America and settled in the Alton, IL area. He married Lucia Virgo. John and Lucia Virgo had 9 children-Joseph V. Alben, Samuel John Alben, Angelo Thomas Alben, Josephine Elizabeth Alben, Joan Rose Alben, Paul Alben, Carl Alben, Anthony Alben, and Anne Alben

(1) John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben's son Joseph V. Alben was born 2-18-1912 in Alton, IL, and died 2-17-2000 in St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton, IL. (Note: Joseph V. Alben married my sister Mildred Westfall.)

He and my sister Mildred lived in Godfrey at the time of his death. He passed away in Saint Anthony's Hospital in Alton. His parents immigrated to America from Italy. He was in the Military Service in the U. S. Army and was a World War II Veteran.

Joseph V. Alben's obituary - Joseph V. Alben, 87, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 at Saint Anthony's Hospital in Alton. A son of the late John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben, he was born Feb. 18, 1912 in Alton. An U.S. Army veteran, he was employed as a mill operator at Laclede Steel. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Alton Sportsmen's Club in Godfrey. He and the former Mildred Westfall were united in marriage Nov. 11, 1944, in Alton. She survives.

Also surviving are a stepson and his wife, Russell and Lois Thompson of Wood River, three grandchildren and their spouses, Terri and Mike Harvey of Alton, Melanie and David Moore of Alton and Lesley and Alan Kolesa of East Alton, five great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Whitney Harvey, Jenna Doolin, Tyler Moore and Alexis Heacox; two sisters, JoAnne Romano of Brighton and Josephine Mayhall of Jerseyville; and four brothers, Angelo Alben of Bethalto, Paul Alben of East Alton, Sam Alben of Brighton and Anthony Alben of Forrest Homes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Alben, and a brother, Carl Alben.

(2) John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben's son - Samuel John Alben, 82, died at 4:42 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Saint Anthony's Health Center in Alton. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Alton to John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben. He married the former Hilda Elizabeth Flunker Sept. 8, 1942, in Old Monroe, Mo. She survives. He was a furnace operator in the tube mill of Laclede Steel, retiring in 1984 after 38 years of service. He was a life member of VFW Post 1308, Knights of Columbus 460 and Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jacob Greeling of Bella Vista, Ark., and Theresa M. and Charles Cairns of Concord, N.C.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Denise and Todd Vaughan of Albany, N.Y., Eric T. Hoehn of Wood River, John J. and Chrissy Greeling of Round Rock, Texas, Sara and Mike Tucker and Brian C. Cairns, all of Concord; six great-grandchildren, Quinten and Abigail Vaughan of Albany, Samantha and Maxwell Hoehn of Wood River, Daisy Tucker of Concord and Jessica Greeling of Round Rock; two sisters, Josephine Mayhall of Alton and Joan Romano of Brighton; and two brothers, Paul Alben of Rosewood Heights and Anthony Alben of Cottage Hills. Samuel John Alben's wife Hilda Elizabeth (Flunker) Alben's obituary - Hilda Elizabeth Alben, 84, died at 1:01 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2007, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Jersey County, to Fredrick J. and Nora A. (Engel) Flunker. She married Samuel John Alben on Sept. 8, 1942 in Old Monroe, Ill. He died March 12, 2005. A homemaker, she was a member of the Ladies of the Jerseyville Moose and St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she was active in a quilting guild.

Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Theresa and Charles Cairns of Brighton and Karen and Jacob Greeling of Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren, Denise Vaughan, Eric Hoehn, John Greeling, Sarah Tucker and Brian Cairns; great-grandchildren, Quinten and Abby Vaughan, Samantha and Max Hoehn, Jessica, Colin and Cody Greeling and Daisy and Elijah Tucker; and four sisters, Freda Fritz of Jerseyville, Bertha Clowers of Alton and Eva and Frank Huber and Molly and George Tolle, all of Godfrey. Samuel John Alben's wife Hilda Elizabeth (Flunker) Alben's sister Eva (Flunker) Huber's husband Frank J. Huber Jr.'s obituary - Frank J. Huber Jr., 88, died at 7 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2009, at Eldercare Nursing Home. Born Jan. 26, 1921, in Alton, he was the son of Frank and Marguerite (St. Cin) Huber Sr. On June 20, 1946, in Alton, he married the former Eva Flunker. She survives. He was a self-employed meat cutter for many years and retired after 13 years of service in security at Lewis and Clark Community College. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.

In addition to his wife, surviving are two daughters, Yvonne Harlow and her husband, Robert, of Indianapolis and Monica Huber of Alton; two sons, Phillip S. Huber of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Kirk D. Huber and his wife, Lisa, of Brighton; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Eugenia Hassman of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Beatrice Huber; a grandson, Jeffrey Huber; and a sister, Mary Jane Yaws. (3) John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben's son Angelo - Angelo Thomas Alben, 83, died at 7:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, with his family at his side. He was born Oct. 25, 1920, in Alton to John and Lucy (Virgo) Alben. He married the former Josephine Lombardo on Sept. 7, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. After many years of service at Owens-Illinois Glass, Inc., he retired in 1983 from the corrogated department. He served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force, was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alton Post 1308 and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton and a third-degree member of Knights of Columbus Alton Council 460. He will always be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his beloved wife of 57 years, he is also survived and will be greatly missed by two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Gary Mook of Alton and Betty and Gary Clark of Godfrey; three brothers, Paul Alben, Anthony Alben and Samuel Alben; two sisters, Josephine Mayhall and Joan Romano; six grandchildren and their spouses, Beth and Rick Mellenthin, Debby and Rich Hood, Chrissy and Joe Certa, Susie and Joe Frasier, Nicole and Nathan Dietrich and Jason and Jendra Clark; two great-grandchildren, Mikey Mook and Gabrielle Dietrich; other extended family; and many dear friends.

Angelo Thomas Alben's wife - Josephine A. (Lombardo) Alben, 81, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Jerseyville Manor. Born June 26, 1924, in Alton, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Dora (Pinta) Lombardo. She married Angelo Thomas Alben on Sept. 7, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, where the couple remained longtime members. He died Nov. 7, 2003. She will be lovingly remembered for her love of her family, especially the love and devotion she had for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by two daughters and a son-in-law, Angela and Gary Mook of Alton and Betty Clark of Godfrey; six grandchildren and their spouses, Beth and Rick Mellenthin of Bunker Hill, Debby and Rich Hood of Edwardsville, Christine and Joe Certa of Springfield, Susan and Joe Frasier of Alton, Nicole and Nathan Dietrich of Ashburn, Va. and 1st Lt. Jason and Jendra Clark of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland; three great-grandchildren Mike Mook of Bunker Hill, Gabrielle Dietrich of Ashburn, Va., and Aiden Frasier of Alton; other extended family; and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Jasper, Joseph and Jackie Lombardo; and a sister, Lena Wyatt. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Father Shawn Monahan, O.M.V., will be the celebrant. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton, followed by a dove release in her memory. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Capital Fund.

(4) John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben's daughter - Josephine Elizabeth Mayhall, 92, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born April 11, 1914, to John and Lucia (Virga) Alben. She married Amiel Mayhall on Oct. 17, 1936, in Alton. He died April 13, 2001. She was a homemaker and a resident at Rosewood Care Center in Alton for the last four years.

She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Sonya and Gary Whyte of Godfrey, Barbara and Ronald Short of Jerseyville, Carole Mayhall of St. Louis and Alyce and William Gibbs of Del Mar, Calif.; a son and his wife, Gene and Maggie Mayhall of Granite City; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Alben of Rosewood Heights and Anthony Alben of Cottage Hills; a daughter-in-law, Christina Phillips of Godfrey; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Alben of Bethalto, Hilda "Curly" Alben of Brighton and Billie Alben of Alton; and her beloved friend at Rosewood Care Center, Susan Morris.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Harold Phillips and infants, Richard and George Mayhall; two sisters, Anne Chick and Joan Romano; and four brothers, Carl, Joseph, Sam and Angelo Alben. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. James Lamply will officiate. Burial will be at Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rosewood Care Center in Alton or the Jersey County Relay for Life.

Josephine Elizabeth (Alben) Mayhall's husband - Amiel Mayhall, 89, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at his home. He was born March 19, 1912, in Chautauqua, a son of the late James Henry and Laura Ann (Brown) Mayhall. A lifelong resident of Fern Glen Valley, he recently moved to Jerseyville because of his ill health. A pipefitter by trade, he began working at Shell Oil Co., where he remained for 19 years, until he began working on construction as a pipefitter with Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local No. 553, of which he was a 65-year member. He married the former Josephine Alben Oct. 17, 1936, in Alton. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Christine Phillips of Godfrey and Gene and Maggie Mayhall of Granite City; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sonya and Gary Whyte of Godfrey, Barbara and Ronald Short of Jerseyville, Carole Mayhall of St. Louis and Alyce and William Gibbs of Del Mar, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Henry J. and Alyce Mayhall of Manchester, Mo. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Richard and George; two sisters, Cora Ince and Bessie Chadderton; and three brothers, Harold Mayhall, Lawrence Mayhall and James Henry Mayhall. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. David McElwain will offficiate. He will be laid to rest in Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society-Jersey County Relay for Life.

Son of Josephine (Alben) Mayhall and the late Harold Owen Phillips Sr. - Harold Owen "Hoppy" Phillips Jr., 70, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a brief illness. A son of Josephine (Alben) Mayhall of Jerseyville and the late Harold Owen Phillips Sr., he was born Nov. 6, 1932, in Alton. He married the former Christina A. Weirich Nov. 9, 1957, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton. She survives. He graduated in 1952 from Marquette Catholic High School. A delivery driver for more than 50 years with Prairie Farms Dairy, he will be remembered as the "Milk Man" by many families. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. A fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Pere Marquette Assembly 203, he enjoyed cooking at the council's chicken and fish dinners. He was an avid fan of Jack Buck and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

In addition to his beloved wife of 45 years and mother, surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey and Cee Jaye Phillips of Columbia, Mo., Christopher and Janise Phillips of Mahomet, Ill. and Shawn and Eileen Phillips of Columbia, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tracey and Jeffrey Bierman of Manchester, Mo., and Michelle and Jeffry Romano of Chicago; 12 grandchildren, Sarah, Lacey, Lindsey, Ryan, Haley, Anna, Samuel, Noah, Rachael, Michael, Joseph, and Parker; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Sonja and Gary Whyte of Godfrey, Barbara and Ronald Short of Jerseyville, Carole Mayhall of St. Louis and Alice and Buzz Gibbs of De Mar, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Maggie Mayhall of Granite City; and other family members and friends. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberley Louise Phillips. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Subday at Staten Funeral Home in Alton with fourth degree Knights of Columbus service and chalice presentation at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Father Jim Nibler will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Alton VFW 1308 ritual team. (5) John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben's daughter - Joan Rose (Alben) Romano, 87, died at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Alton to John and Lucia (Verigo) Alben. She married Vincent J. Romano on April 24, 1937, in Alton. He died April 24, 1978.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Lucia McNear and Anita and Harry Oertel, all of Brighton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank "Butch" and Nan Romano of Brighton and Mike and Sandy Romano of Alton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Mayholl of Alton; and two brothers, Paul Alben of Rosewood Heights and Tony Alben of Illinois. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Carl, Joe, Sam and Angelo Alben; and one sister, Ann Chick. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at Targhetta and Wooldridge Funeral Home, followed by services at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton. Father Peter Donohoe will officiate.
