John Westfall

Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall Sr.'s son John Westfall was born in 1761 in Sussex Co., New Jersey, and died December 12, 1824 in Harrison Co, Virginia. He married Margaret Wolfe, the daughter of Nicholas and Christina Wolfe and they had 3 children-Elizabeth Westfall, Stephen Westfall, and Jacob Westfall.

John Westfall was the son of Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall Sr. His grandparents were Abel and Antjen "Anna" (Bogaert) Westfall. His great grandparents were Johannes and Marritje (Kool) Westfall, and John's great great grandfather was the original Westfall immigrant to America who came to America in 1642 from Holland, Jurian Westfall who married Maritje Hansen.

(Note: John Westfall was a brother of my gr. gr. gr. grandfather Cornelius Westfall Jr. In fact Ruby Genevieve (Lentz) Wilmore, the daughter of my father's half sister Grace (Westfall) Lentz, who wrote a book about the Westfalls said in her book that either Cornelius Westfall Sr.'s son John Westfall or Cornelius Westfall Jr. was my gr. gr. grandfather Jacob C. Westfall's father. Both John and Cornelius Jr. had sons named Jacob born about the same time. Other sources I have found on the internet seem to point to Cornelius Westfall Jr. being the father of my gr. gr. grandfather Jacob C. Westfall, but there is still some uncertainty.)

John Westfall's gr. gr. grandfather Juriaen Westfall (Westvael) was born in 1629 in Holland. Jurian Westfall was the first recorded Westfall ancestor in America. He came to America in 1642. On August 4, 1642 Jurian Westfall (Juriaen Van Westphalen) arrived in New Amsterdam, New York aboard a ship called "The Houttuyn" from Luyderdorp, Holland. He was only 13 at the time. His family had migrated to Holland from Westphalia in Germany in the 1600's. It is not known whether his parents died in Holland or enroute, or he came with other relatives. He then went up the Hudson River 135 miles arriving at Fort Orange (later Albany) New York on August 11, 1642. He arrived as an indentured servant to killiaen Van Reassalaer. He was placed in the home of Michael Jansen ... Jurian moved south of Albany to Esopus (later Kingston) New York with his friend and fellow indentured servant Evert Pels in about 1653. He was granted 32 morgan (70 acres) of land Sept. of 1654. He married Marretge Jansen that same year. On Aug. 17, 1659 Jurian and 12 others petitioned Peter Stuyvesant to establish a chuch at Wiltwyck (Esopus was briefly named Wiltwyck and later after British rule called Kingston}. Jurian signed with a three pronged fork of trident mark. The church was established. Numerous records regarding Jurian and his descendants are available in records of the then Dutch Reformed Church of New York.

The following information is from a book "American Nomads" written by Emily Stowell whose ancestor Jacob Kuykendall married Sara Westfall daughter of Johannes.... The Esopus Indians lived near Wiltwyck and for a number of years they were peaceful, but in 1663 they burned and looted the town. There were 12 men, 2 children, and 4 women killed, and 6 women and 7 children taken prisoner. Jurian and his family escaped harm at the time, but later in 1667 or 1668 Jurian was killed by Indians who were at war with the Esopus Indians while he was guiding a troop of British soldiers. Jurian married Marretje Hansen about 1654. Marretje was born in about 1636 in Holland. Her father was Hans Hansen or Jansen (Hans Jansen Van Noordstrandt). Hans was born about 1610 on Norstrand Island, Netherlands, and migrated to New Amsterdam in 1638. He worked as an interpreter and often traveled between Holland and the new settlement. He married Rymerig Volkert, and they had 4 children-Marretje, Hans, Simon, and Elsa. His wife died in 1645, and Hans placed Marritje who was just 9 and her sister Elsa in the home of a farmer Phillip Garretsen where they learned the art of homemaking. Hans died in 1690 in Flatlands, Brooklyn. After Jurian's death Marritje remarried to Jacob Jansen. Marritje died after 1670 in Ulster, Kingston County, New York.

In 1696 Jurian's son Johannes Westfall, who was John Westfall's great grandfather, and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas, and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. The peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement. They were among the first white people to live in the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian married Jacob's sister Styntje Kuykendall and Jacob married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard in the area, and Jacob established the first trading post.

---------------------

Jurian and Marretje (Hansen) Westfall had 6 children-Rymerick Westfall, Nicholas Claes Westfall, Johannes Juriaen Westfall, Abel Westfall, Symen Westfall, and Elsjen Westfall.

John Westfall's grandfather was Abel John Westfall born about 1696 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. He died in 1755 in Hampshire County, Virginia. He was the son of Johannes and Maritje (Kool) Westfall. He married 2-25-1717 Antjen "Anna" Bogaert (sometimes spelled Bogard or Bogart) in Minisink, Orange County, New York. She was the daughter of Cornelius and Eva (Hornbeck) Bogaert. They had 9 children-Cornelius Westfall, Sara Westfall, Johannes Westfall, John Westfall, Catherine Westfall, Leah Westfall, Anna Westfall, and Lydia estfall.

John Westfall's father was Cornelius Abel Westfall Sr. born in 1721 Kingston, New York. He died in 1784 in Hampshire County, Virginia. He was the son of Abel and Antjen "Anna" (Bogaert) Westfall. He married Elizabeth Westfall born 1-16-1726, the daughter of Jacob and Margrietje "Margaret" (De Duyster) Westfall. They were cousins. She died in 1767. In about 1747 Cornelius and Elizabeth were married. At about this time Cornelius and his wife Elizabeth moved away from the Delaware River to the Virginia Territory near the south branch of the Potomac River near the present day town of Romney. Cornelius's father Abel had migrated there in 1743 with his nephew Jacob and son John, and was granted 400 acres in Augusta County, Virginia in 1748. In 1754 Hampshire County, Virginia was created from Augusta and Frederic Counties, and Romney became the Hampshire County seat in 1762, and later in 1863 became a part of West Virginia when that state was admitted to the union.

Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall had 8 children-Cornelius Westfall Jr. (my great great great grandfather), Anna Westfall, Margaret Westfall, Jacob Westfall, John Westfall, Mary Caroline Westfall, Isaac Westfall, Zachariah Westfall.

Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall Sr's son John Westfall married Margaret Wolfe. He was born in 1761 in Sussex Co., New Jersey, and died December 12, 1824 in Harrison Co, Virginia. He married Margaret Wolfe Abt. 1787. Margaret Wolfe was the daughter of Nicholas and Christina Wolfe and they had these 3 children-Elizabeth Westfall, Stephen Westfall, and Jacob Westfall.

This land is around the present city of Petersburg, WV. John shows in 1782 Hampshire Co tax record used to reconstruct the missing 1790 VA census with a total of 7 people. As Cornelius died in 1781 this could be family or farm help but definitely not his wife and children as he would be about 21 at this time.

John enlisted in the Continental army (7th VA regiment) in 1780 for 18 months service. He joined at Winchester VA and did service at Hillsborough NC, Guilford Courthouse NC (not in this battle), and was discharged at Salisbury, NC according to pension records. He could have been in Kings mtn, Cowbins, and Yorktown battle but I have not studied the activities of the 7th VA regiment in the Continental army (another project as well as Capt Abel Westfall's 8th VA). After father Cornelius died in 1781 the children moved away from Hardy Co Va. Jacob went to KY with cousin Daniel, while Isaac, Cornelius, Josiah, and Zachariah went to Beverly, Randolph Co. VA. Note: I found the following informaton about Stephen and Elizabeth (Morrison) Westfall's son Jackson (Jack) Westfall who settled in the town of Westfall Oregon on the internet at this website- http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/or/westfall.html

Town of Westfall, Oregon; County: Mulheur; Climate: In the mountains; Best time to visit: Summer.
Comments: According to the 1990 census there were 40 people in the 'township'. It did have a post office. From I 84 just inside Oregon from Idaho turn onto hwy 201 south to state hwy 20/26. Go west about 12 miles or so to the town of Vale. Continue on hwy 20 another 20 miles or so to the town of Harper. There is a paved road that goes north from Harper to the town of Westfall, then the pavement stops according to the map. There is a Westfall cemetery also. Remains: Unknown

Westfall, Oregon was founded by Levi Westfall. This was close to the Oregon Trail and is along Bully Creek. Will post a revision when I have more. Submitted by: Nancy Wagner: The town was founded by Levi Westfall - the following is from a book, Pioneer Days in Malheur County, pages starting 328. Westfall was a typical town of "The Old West". It could appropriately be called the last frontier town in Malheur county. It first appearaed on the map about 1882 when Phil Cammann opened a store on the old Levi Westfall place. There were only four small houses in the town. Levi Westfall, for whom the town was named, located the homstead in 1870. He was a West Virginian and was the first pioneer to locate in the Alder creek valley - later Bully creek. James and Jack Westfall, brothers, came to the vicinity with their families in the early Eighties. .... James F., son of James Westfall, was born in Westfall. In early manhood he farmed and raised livestock on Bully creek and later engaged in business in Juntura and Fruitland. He died at the hospital in Ontario January 18, 1946, at the age of 64. The worst Indian trouble early settlers had in the Westfall locality was due to stock stealing. Many ranchers continuously risked their lives in trying to recover the animals. On one raid the Indians stold Levi Westfall's bible, tore out the leaves, and scattered them along the trail.

Westfall grew from one small store to three general stores, two hotels, a bank, three saloons, a blacksmith shop, two livery barns, a large frame school house, church, candy store, garage and dance hall. ...... Westfall was incorporated in 1895 and J.C. Skelton was the first mayor. William M. Westfall, a nephew of Levi Westfall, was among the last of those old pioneers to cross the great divide. He died in Ontario on May 9, 1946, at the age of 81. Mr. Westfall spent his boyhood in west Virginia and came to Westfall in 1883, when 18 years of age. He was married in 1896 and spent most of his life farming in that community. His wife preceded him in death. His three sons, Ray, Victor and Delbert, reside in Ontario. Two daughters, Mrs. Etta Schulz and Mrs. Barbara Turner, reside at Harper. A third daughter lives in California.

Jack Westfall came from West Virginia in 1884 with his family, including four sons, Henry, John, Albert and Jasper, and two daughters, now Mrs. Martha Westfall Solders, and Mrs. Alice Westfall Cole. Jasper was killed while serving as city marshal of Westfall by Asa Carey, May 10, 1912 when Carey was resisting arrest. Carey was sent to prison. Henry and John now live in Ontario. Henry Westfall and his wife, May, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on November 10, 1947. When the Malheur valley railroad started building through Malheur canyon and work was started on a depot at Harper in 1909 most of the town of Westfall was moved to Harper. At one time Westfall contained three stores, a bank, two hotels, two saloons, two livery barns, a blacksmith shop and other business establishments and the homes of about 300 families. Soon after Harper became the railroad station, Westfall dwindled to one store, one dwelling, a school house and a church.

(3) John and Margaret (Wolfe) Westfall's son Jacob Westfall was born in 1797. I don't have any other information about their son Jacob Westfall.
