----------------------

Note: I found this information on the internet about John and Anna (Westfall) Anderson's son Jeremiah Goldsmith Anderson who was killed with John Brown at Harper's Ferry at this website- http://www3.iath.virginia.edu/jbrown/men.html

Jeremiah Goldsmith Anderson, one of Brown's lieutenants, was born April 17, 1833, in Indiana, and was therefore in his twenty-seventh year when killed at Harper's Ferry. He was the son of John Anderson, and was the grandson of slaveholders; his maternal grandfather, Colonel Jacob Westfall, of Tygert Valley, Virginia, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a slaveholder.

Anderson went to school at Galesburg, Illinois, and Kossuth, Iowa; he worked as a peddler, farmer, and employee of a saw-mill, before emigrating to Kansas in August, 1857, where he settled on the Little Osage, Bourbon County, a mile from Fort Bain. He was twice arrested by pro- slaveryites, and for ten weeks imprisoned at Fort Scott; he then became a lieutenant of Captain Montgomery, and was with him in the attack on Captain Anderson's troop of the First U. S. Cavalry. He also witnessed the murder on his own doorstep of a Mr. Denton by Border Ruffians. He was with John Brown on the slave raid into Missouri, and thereafter followed Brown's fortunes. Writing July 5, 1859, of his determination to continue to fight for freedom, he said:" Millions of fellow-beings require it of us; their cries for help go out to the universe daily and hourly. Whose duty is it to help them? Is it yours? Is it mine? It is every man's, but how few there are to help. But there are a few who dare to answer this call and dare to answer it in a manner that will make this land of liberty and equality shake to the centre."

Anderson was killed at Harper's Ferry by a bayonet-thrust of one of the marines. "One of the prisoners described Anderson as turning completely over against the wall [to which he was pinned by the bayonet] in his dying agony. he lived a short time, stretched on the brick walk without, where he was subjected to savage brutalities, being kicked in body and face, while one brute of an armed farmer spat a huge quid of tobacco from his vile jaws into the mouth of the dying man, which he first forced open."

Note: I found the following information about the Harper's Ferry John Brown's Raid in which Jeramiah Anderson was killed on the internet at this website- http://www.laughtergenealogy.com/bin/histprof/misc/harpersferry.html

Harper's Ferry John Brown's Raid -- Oct. 16, 1859 John Brown saw himself as a God-sent liberator to wipe out slavery in the American South. Following his raid in Kansas in 1856, he had been devising a plan to purify the entire South through an armed slave rebellion that he would lead. Brown believed that "without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins" Also, with all of the recent victories for southern slave-holders (Kansas-Nebraska Act, Dred Scott decision, etc.), Brown thought that "violent counterstroke was the only answer" .

Brown persuaded many abolitionists to support his ideas, and attempted to recruit Frederick Douglas into his effort. Douglass, the night before Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, failed in an attempt to persuade Brown not to go forward with the plan to capture the Federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), seize all the weapons there, and arm thousands of slaves who were to join him. Brown recruited 17 white and five black men to comprise his "army."

On Oct. 16, 1859, Brown and his men captured the unguarded arsenal, but then seemed to have no alternate plan for the next step. He waited for the legions of slaves to join him, but because he had sent out little word to them, only a handful actually showed up. News of the arsenal's capture spread rapidly, and during the night of Oct. 17-18, Brown's men were surrounded by marines commanded by Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart.

Brown refused to surrender, and the marines stormed the building resulting in a battle leaving three locals, two of Brown's sons, and twelve others dead. Brown was sentenced to death and his attempt to start a rebellion had failed. However, Brown did not fail to provoke a violent uprising. His raid was one of many causes leading directly to the Civil War. It was the first nationally publicized uprising and after his execution, those who believed him a saint now saw him as a martyr. His death provided impetus for abolitionists in the North to rally and gain strength. Source Used: Ordeal By Fire, James MacPherson, 1991.

Note: I found the following information about Reuben Westfall and his family being among the first settlers in Yellow Springs Township, Des Moines County, Iowa on the internet at this website- /Heartland/Valley/7259/westfall.html

YELLOW SPRINGS AND HURON TOWNSHIP, by J.W. Merril and published 1897 in Mediapolis, IA we find the following items: pg 27 ".....They (the Blairs) found a cabin at Yellow Spring, occupied by Jacob Westfall and Allen Eliot, a brother of Mrs. Westfall. These claimants had come in the winter of 1834, and the Westfall cabin was the first habitation built in the township. ....... In this cabin, a few months later, Jacob Westfall jr first saw the light of day and set up his claim, which has never been disputed, as being the first white child born in Yellow Springs township."

pg 31 " Josiah Edwards married Pamelia Westfall in the spring of 1836. This was the first wedding in Yellow Spring Township. " and "In the spring of 1836, Reuben Westfall, the father of Jacob came, with his children and relatives - an extensive connection when they all got in. They were the Andersons, Kings, Proctors, Swanks, Rouses, Holts, Gobens and Barnes, who settled near Yellow Spring, on the south side of Round Prairie, and on the Bottom."

pg 49 "THE WESTFALL FAMILY. It has been a difficult matter to obtain any sketch of this family of early settlers. Jacob was one of the first claim makers and built the first cabin in the township, as otherwhere recorded. He appears to have been a man given to hospitality, and his cabin was a home and a preaching place for the itinerant for many years. His father, Reuben Westfall, and other sons came in later, settling in the Yellow Spring neighborhood and on the Bottom. They are all gone now. One son, Jacob Jr. the first white child born in the township, was here a few years ago, but he is now in the west.

Westfall, a farmer residing on section 7, Oakland Township, was born in Boone Counlty, Ind., in 1831, and was the second in a family of nine children born to Jacob and Caroline (Elliott) Westfall. His father was a native of Kentucky, while his mother was born in York State, and when a young man Jacob Westfall removed to Indiana, where he was married and there followed farming for several years. In 1834 he followed the course of Western emigration, settling in Des Moines County, Iowa, entering a claim in Yellow Springs Township, which he later purchased at the Burlington land sales. He also resided in Washington and Henry Counties, and in 1862 came to Louisa County, locating in Oakland Township, where he remained some years, when he went to Kansas, but after a short time returned to Louisa County, and made his home with our subject until his death, which occurred June 20, 1874. His wife survived him for about two years, dying Nov. 29, 1876.

Our subject grew to manhood upon a farm, and received his education in the district schools of the state. He was among the first to respond to his country's call for troops, enlisting in September 1861 as First Sergeant of Company D, 4th Iowa Cavalry, and was mustered into service at Camp Harlan in Mt. Pleasant. He participated in the battle of Vicksburg, and was engaged in scouting expeditions and skirmishes in the Southern and Southwestern States. In the battle of Oakland, Miss., he was wounded by gunshot, and on the 4th of November 1864, was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa. After the cessation of hostilities, he returned to Louisa County, where, during his term of service, he had purchased a farm of 230 acres. He has since disposed of a part of that tract, and now has remaining about sixty acres of fine, arable land, which is highly cultivated and improved.

On the 2d of September, 1869, in Louisa County, Mr. Westfall led to the marriage alter Miss Alice M. Blake, daughter of Joseph and Ester (Hungerford) Blake, the father a native of Greenbrier County, W.Va., the mother of New York. Accompanied by his family, the father came to Louisa County in 1838, settling in Oakland Township. They setled on section 7, Oakland Township, he buying the land at the Burlington land sales, and there resided until his death, Dec 14, 1883, aged eighty years. Mrs. Blake is still living, and resides in Barber County, Kan. By the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Westfall two children were born; Lottie I., wife of E. Garard, who lives on the old homestead; and Gertie, who died March 4, 1881, at the age of four years. Mr. Westfall is an active worker for the interests of the Republican party, and an ardent supporter of its principles. He has held several local offices of trust, in which he discharged his duties faithfully and well. His home is pleasantly situated about two miles from Columbus Junction, between the forks of the rivers, where the land is very productive. He is a systematic and progressive farmer, and as a citizen ranks high in the community.
