George married Lucinda (Lucy) Lee Bullard, born April 10, 1817 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and died October 9, 1917 in Cameron, Missouri. George married April 17, 1836. George Cope's wife - Lucinda (Bullard) Cope, died 10-09-1917. Mrs. Lucinda Cope, 100 years, died at home of her son, Milton Cope, in Cameron, Mo. Tuesday, October, 9. Funeral at Cameron. Mr. Cope was oldest pioneer of Jersey Co., having come to this county when a child of 6. Her husband, George Cope, died 25 years ago. Mother of 11 children: Mrs. Daniel Bray, Allie Cope, of Jersey. Co.; Mrs. Orange Sandidge of Adair, Okla., Milton Cope of Camerson Mo., and Joseph Cope of Joplin, Mo.

Henry & Emeline (Cope) Chance's daughter - Mary (Chance) Reddish, died 03-08-1952. Mary Reddish, 87 years, 8 months, 15 days, widow of Zeddock Reddish, died at 11 am Saturday, March 8. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Monday, March 10, at the family home, 307 Hickory St., Jerseyville. Rev. M. Edwards Breed, pastor of First Presbyterian church officiated and interment was in Reddish cemetery. Mrs. Reddish had been in ill health for some time and had been bedfast for the past 3 years.

She was a daughter of the late Henry & Emeline (Cope) Chance and was born in Jersey County, June 23, 1864. She had lived in Jersey County all her life. Surviving are : 2 sons, Jacob H. Reddish of Jerseyville, and Zed C. Reddish of Chicago; 3 daughters, Mrs. Joel Morrison of Fieldon, Mrs. Lillian Daniels and Mrs. Roy C. Hicks of Jerseyville; 7 grandchildren; 7 g-grandchildren and 3 sisters, Mrs. Alice Bridges of Fieldon, Mrs. Lynda Bowers and Mrs. Hattie Schultz of Jerseyville.

(5a) George and Lucinda "Lucy" (Bullard) Cope's son Allen Cope was born 9-25-1847 in Jersey County, IL. He died 11-13-1938. He is buried at Grimes-Neely Cemetery, English Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Cynthia Warner 10-28-1868 in Jersey County, IL. She was born in 1853 and died in 1915. She is buried in Grimes-Neely Cemetery. Allen Cope's wife - Mrs. Allen Cope of Spankey died May 24. 62 years. Leaves husband, 4 sons, 3 daughters. Aged mother, 2 sisters three brothers. 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.

(1aa) Allen and Cynthia (Warner) Cope's son - Luther Cope, died 12-21-1954. Luther Cope, a native of Jersey County, died Tuesday, December 21, at his home in Bloomfield, Missouri, following a short illness. The body was brought to Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville where friends may call. Services were held at the Funeral Home Friday afternoon, December 24, at two o'clock. Reverend Carl Moman officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Cope is a retired farmer. he was a son of the late Allen and Cynthia Warner Cope, and his age at the time of death was eighty-five years, one month and twenty days. The decedent is survived by two sons, Clyde M. Cope of Jerseyville and Elbert Cope of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Mrs. Mark Welch of Decatur; two brothers William and Fred Cope of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. John Powel of East Hardin, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Luther Cope married Ella Armstrong 7-3-1891. Luther and Ella (Armstrong) Cope's son Clyde M. Cope was born in in 1892 in Jersey County, IL. He died 11-1-1980. He married Effie E. Bunse 11-20-1915 in Jersey County, IL. Clyde Cope's wife - Effie E. (Bunse) Cope, died 03-20-1983. A funeral Mass for Effie E. Cope, 90, of 410 Fletcher, Jerseyville was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father Patrick Morrow as celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. She died at 3:40 a.m. March 20 at Jersey Community hospital. She was born Feb. 4, 1893 in Jersey County, a daughter of William and Mary Henrihon Bunse. Her husband, Clyde M. Cope, died Nov. 1, 1980, and her son, Maurice Cope, also preceded her in death. She is survived by one sister, Eva Gilleland of Eldred; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. the Rosary was recited at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home.

Clara Alice Borman, 76 years 2 mo, 8 days, of Fieldon and widow of Joseph Borman, died March 24, at Boyd Memorial hospital in Carrollton where she had been a patient for the past 6 wks. Mrs Borman was the daughter of the Allen & Cynthia (Warner) Cope, and was born in Jersey county, Jan. 16, 1871.

Surviving Mrs. Borman are 2 daughters, Mrs. Paul Gilleland of Fieldon and Mrs. Jessie Reynolds of Carrollton; 6 grandchildren; 11 Great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. John Powell of Fieldon and Mrs. John Holtsworth of Eldred; 3 brothers, Luther Cope of Bloomfield, MO, William Cope and Fred Cope of Des Moines, IA. Her husband and 1 daughter, Mrs Josie Schudel preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Louis V. Huber officiated and interment was in Dayton cemetery.

John and Mary Cope Powell's son - Vernice Clayton Powell, died 9 February 1982: The funeral of Vernice Clayton Powell, 75, of Hardin was conducted Tuesday at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin with burial in the Hardin cemetery. Born 27 December 1906 in Fieldon, he was the son of John and Mary Cope Powell. His survivors are his wife, the former Malissa Peeler; and three sisters, Maurieta Watson, Delta Rush and Bonita Powell, all of Jerseyville. The Calhoun Ambulance Fund and the American Cancer Society have been named as memorials.

John and Mary (Cope) Powell's daughter Bonita Powell's obituary - Bonita Powell, 91, died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born Aug. 31, 1916, in Fieldon to John and Mary (Cope) Powell, who are deceased. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Delta Rush and Maurieta Watson and one brother, Vernice Powell. Visitation will be from 12:30 to time of services at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Charles West will officiate. Burial will be at Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

He married Lory Medford 4-25-1872 in Jersey County, IL. She was the daughter of James and Atha Ann (Carson) Medford. William Henry and Lory (Medford) Cope had these children-Loney M. Cope, Herbert Cope, Mark Cope, and Florence Cope.

He is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Eliza Jane Plumb 12-25-1901 in Jersey County, IL. She was the daugter of Lafayette and Mary (Lippard) Plumb. She was born 7-28-1884 and 3-15-1932. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery. Loney and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope had these children-Alfred Leonard Cope, Earl L. Cope, Clyde Cope, Mary Cope, and Pearl Cope.

(1aaa) Loney and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope's son Leonard Alfred Cope, died 01-26-1973. Funeral services for Alfred Leonard Cope, 70, of Godfrey were held Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with Rev. M. Edwards Breed of Jerseyville officiating. He died at 9:20 a.m. on January 26 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton. Interment was in the Fieldon Cemetery. Born September 20, 1902 he was the son of Lonnie M. and Aliza Plumb Cope. Mr. Cope was a laborer. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. William J. Briggs of Jerseyville and Mrs. Thomas Siek of Godfrey; one brother Earl Cope of Grand Junction, Michigan. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home.

(2aaa) Loney and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope's son Earl L. Cope, died 11-27-1988. Earl L. Cope, 77, of Benton Harbor, Mich., formerly of Jersey County, died at 7 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 1988, at home. The retired flower farmer was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. Born in Jersey County, his parents were the late Loney M. and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope. He married Marie Emery, who preceded him in death, and later married the former Jenny Gregory, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Linda Cope of Benton Harbor; two grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Silk of Godfrey. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Leonard and Clyde Cope; and a sister, Pearl Briggs. Visitation was 5-9 p.m. with service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Florin Funeral Home in Benton Harbor. Burial was in the Lee County (Mich.) Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Lacota (Mich.) Baptist Church, where Cope was a member.

(3aaa) Loney and Eliza Jane (Plumb) Cope's daughter - Mary A. (Cope) Silk, 82, died at 3:42 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Fieldon to Loney M. and Eliza J. (Plumb) Cope. She married Thomas W. Silk Oct. 26, 1941, in Union, Mo. He died Dec. 29, 1982. She was the owner and operator of Silk Kennels, retiring in 1965 after 12 years of service, and a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Alton.

Survivors include a son, Tom Silk, and his wife, Gayle Smith, of West Alton; three grandchildren, Thomas Lee Silk, Ashley Silk and Shane Silk, all of West Alton; and two great-grandchildren, Kimberly Silk and Skye Silk, both of West Alton. Visitation were from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Services were at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Orrin Anderson officiating. Burial was at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the 5As.

Briggs, 74, of Jerseyville, died Jan. 22, at Jersey Community hospital. Her husband was the late William Jefferson Briggs Sr. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Leo Nafd Todd officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. She was born Dec. 25, 1905 at Fieldon, a daughter of Lonnie M. & Eliza Jane (Plum) Cope.

Survivors are 2 sons, Charles W Briggs and Morris Briggs both of Jerseyville; 6 daughters, Thelma Davis, Kane, Grace Kanallakan, Barbara Lyles and Marcella Lyles, Jerseyville, Elsie Simpson, Winston Salem, NC and Betty Roberts, Dow; 1 brother, Earl Cope of Michigan; 1 sister, Mary Silk of Godfrey; 31 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sons, Paul and William Jr., 4 brothers and 1 sister. Memorials may be given to the Art fund.

(1aaaa) William Briggs Sr. & Pearl (Cope) Briggs's son Charles "Stormy", born 03-09-1924, Fieldon, Jersey County, Illinois, died 11-14-1993, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Charles "Stormy" Briggs, 69, died Nov.14, 1993, at Jersey Community hospital. He worked for nearly 30 years at Owens-Illinois Glass as a route clerk and retired in 1979. The WWII army veteran later worked part time at Dairy Queen in Jerseyville. born March 9, 1924, in Fieldon Township (Richwood), he was a son of the late William Briggs Sr. & Pearl (Cope) Briggs. He married Catherine (Goeman) Briggs Nov.30, 1963, in Jerseyville. She survives. Also

surviving are a stepson,Fred Walther of Nashville, TN; 3 step grandchildren; Katie Primm, Becky Walther and Eric Walther; 1 step G-grandchild, Ashley Nichole Primm; 6 sisters, Mrs. Charles (Thelma) Davis of Jerseyville, Mrs. Delbert (Grace) Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Mrs. Milford (Elsie) Simpson of N Carolina, Mrs. Harold (Betty) Roberts of Dow, Mrs. Jim (Barbara) Lyles of Kane, and Mrs. James (Marcella) Lyles of Georgia; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Morris & Patricia Briggs of Delhi; and numerous nieces and nephews. 2 brothers, Paul and William Briggs, preceded him in death. Visitation and services were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev John Allen of Peace United Church of Christ officiated with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to ambulance fund or a charity of one's choice.

(2aaaa) William Briggs Sr. & Pearl (Cope) Briggs's son - Paul C., born 10-12-1925, Alton, Madison County, Illinois, died 09-21-1975, buried Oak Grove Cemetery. Paul C. Briggs, 49, died at Sept. 21, at Jersey Community hospital, following an illness of 2 days. He was born Oct. 12, 1925 in Alton, the son of William & Pearl (Cope) Briggs. He served in the armed forces during WWII. He married Shirley (Ford) Briggs, Jun 28, 1951, and was a salesman for Colonial Bakery.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley, daughter, Janice at home and Mrs. Dan (Diana) Osborn, Jerseyville; his parents; brothers, Charles William Jr., and Morris Briggs, all of Jerseyville; sisters, Mrs. Thelma Davis, of Kane; Mrs. Grace Kanallakan, Jerseyville; Mrs. Elsie Simpson, NC, Mrs. Betty Roberts, Dow and Barbara Lyles and Mrs. Marcella Lyles, both of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral home in Jerseyville. Rev Robert Heintz officiated with interment in Oak Grove cemetery. He was a member of VFW, Moose, Eagles and American Legion. Memorials may be given to Mooseheart.

He married Mary Hall. Mark and Mary (Hall) Cope had these children-Mae Cope, Lena Cope, Clarence Cope, Mark Cope, and Mrs. Charles Hardwick.

Mrs. Forbes, wife of John Forbes, was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Mark Cope and was born in Fieldon September 7, 1916. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Robert of Milton and John V. of St. Joseph, MO; 14 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. George Frazier of Jerseyville and Mrs. Charles Hardwick of Shipman; and 2 brothers, Mark Cope of Fieldon and Clarence Cope of Alton. Services were held Sunday at C. C. hanks Funeral Home in Pearl. Burial was in Nebo city cemetery.

She is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyvile, IL. She married George F. Frazer the son of Fredrick and Margaret (Dabbs) Frazer. He was born 1-13-1899 in Jersey County, IL, and he died 4-30-1978 at Greenwood Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville, IL. He is buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. He married Lena Cope 8-3-1921. They had 3 children-Ruth Frazer, Marcella "Mickey" Frazer, and George E. Frazer.

She was born May 16, 1930, in Otterville, to George and Lena (Cope) Frazer. A homemaker and farm wife, she married Eugene Steinkuehler on Aug. 14, 1954, at Bethel Baptist Church. He survives. In addition to her husband, surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pamela Gowin and Sandy and John Clark, all of Jerseyville, and Kim and Ed Snyder of Shipman; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronald and Bobbi Steinkuehler and Michael Steinkuehler, all of Jerseyville; grandchildren and spouses, Tracy and Ben Gilmore, Tabitha and Donald Bortz, Jim and Alison Clark, Doug and Anna, Chris and Whitney and Robert Steinkuehler, Ryan Clark, Justin and Jennifer Steinkuehler and Merissa and Shon Graden; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, George Frazer, and a sister, Ruth Richey. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Pastor Michael Parsons will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Fund.

Cope, 73, died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at his home. He was born March 29, 1931, in Alton to William Franklin and Myrtle Marie (Duncan) Cope. He married the former Betty L. Keel on Nov. 23, 1950, at the Cherry Street Baptist Church in Alton. She survives. He worked for A.O. Smith in Granite City for 27 years. He then founded Cope and Sons Asphalt, from which he semi-retired in 1997. He continued to work in the business with his sons until two years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Muriel Sutton and Mary Lou Milhime; and two granddaughters, Tracy Cope and Chanda Lynn Cope. Mrs. Adelaide Cope, 99, believed to be Jerseyville's oldest citizen, died at six-ten o'clock Thursday evening, April 11, at Waters Nursing Home where she had been a patient the past six weeks. Prior to her last illness, Mrs. Cope had made her home for many years with her daughter, Mrs. Scott Hardman, 405 West Pine Street, Jerseyville. Reverend Harold E. Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, officiated at funeral services held at three o'clock Easter Sunday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in the Grimes-Neely Cemetery, west of Jerseyville. Mrs. Cope was born in Jersey County on December 29, 1863, a daughter of the late Gershon Clay and Caroline D Sandidge Patterson. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Cope had enjoyed fairly good health and maintained an active interest in everyday affairs.

Her survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Hardman; one son, W. Austin Cope, Jerseyville businessman and teacher; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. Her husband, William J. Cope, a daughter, Bertha, and a son, Orville A. Cope, preceded her in death.

(1aaa) William Jacob and Adelaide (Patterson) Cope's son - William Austin Cope, died 10-28-1965. William Austin Cope, retired Jerseyville businessman and school teacher, died unexpectedly Thursday night, October 28, at 11:55 o'clock at his home, 213 East Pearl Street, this city. Mr. and Mrs. Cope had spent Thursday evening in Godfrey. He became ill after retiring for the night and his death occurred within a short time. Visitation hours were at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where Masonic services were conducted Saturday evening at eight o'clock. He had been a Mason for forty years, joining the fraternal organization in Freeburg, and transferring his membership to Jerseyville in 1943. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Baptist Church where he was teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Rev. Carlton G. Christenson, pastor of the church, officiated at the rites and burial was in Grimes Cemetery west of Jerseyville.

Mr. Cope was engaged in the teaching profession about twenty-five years. His first position was at Henderson school west of Jerseyville at the age of eighteen. His last position was as a member of the faculty at the Jerseyville East Elementary School. After his retirement from the teaching field Mr. Cope died substitute teaching. He attended Illinois State Teachers College at Carbondale and continued his degree through correspondence work. The family moved to Jerseyville in 1937 from Godfrey where he was engaged in the Round Oak heating business and also taught school. In 1938 he purchased the Oliver machinery agency from Downey and Beckner and the business became known as Austin Cope & Son. For a period of fifteen years Mr. Cope was sales representative for the Oliver Company. In 1947 the firm erected a new building and entered into the automobile business along with its farm machinery. The firm disposed of the Oliver agency in 1957. Since retiring from business six years ago Mr. Cope had sold real estate at various times.

He was a son of the late WIlliam Jacob and Adeline Patterson Cope and was born in Jersey County on June 24, 1890. His age at the time of death was seventy-five years four months and four days. Mr. Cope's death occurred as he and his wife were making plans to mark their golden wedding anniversary. He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Sanders to whom he was married December 4, 1915 in Troy, Mo., two sons, Aaron, Jerseyville businessman, and Wendell of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Norma) L'Heureux of Dixon and Mrs. Doris Osmond of Hinsdale; one sister, Mrs. Olive M. Hardman of Jerseyville, nine grandchildren and one great grandson.

William Austin and Alice N. (Sanders) Cope's son - Aaron Cope, died 06-19-1992. Aaron Cope, 75, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday June 19, 1992, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton. He was a retail cars salesman with an Oldsmobile and Cadillac dealer from 1941 to 1967; a salesman with Oliver Farm Machinery; and a Chicago Motor Club AAA Territorial Representative, retiring in 1978. Cope was a member of the Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis, Scottish Rites Bodies of Belleville, Order of the Eastern Star 656 of Jerseyville, Elks Lodge 1016 of Effingham and Effingham Presbyterian Church. Born in Kemper Nov. 21, 1916, he was a son of the late WIlliam Austin and Alice N. (Sanders) Cope. He married the former Pauline Voorhees in Jerseyville on Aug. 27, 1939. She died Nov. 16, 1986.

Surviving are three sons, David P. Cope of Godfrey, James L. Cope of Washington, Pa., and William A. "Bill" Cope of Taylorville; two daughters, Nancy Jane Campbell of Morton and Judy Foxall of Bluford; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Doris Jean Osmond of Burr Ridge and Norma L. Heureux of Dixon. A half brother, Wendell A. Jackson, preceded him in death. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with rites at 7 p.m. by Jerseyville Masonic Lodge 394 AF & AM, of which he was a member. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Walter Krebs officiating. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Cope, 68, of Effingham, Ill. formerly of Jerseyville, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 1986 at St. Anthony's Hospital in Effingham. She was born in Jersey County, daughter of the late Richard H. and Nina (Nail) Voorhees. On Aug. 27, 1939, in Jerseyville, she married Aaron Cope, and he survives. Mrs. Cope was a self-employed piano and organ teacher and a former organist of the First Presbyterian Church of Effingham.

Besides her husband, surviving are three sons, David P. Cope of Godfrey, James L. "Jim" Cope of Washington, Pa., and William A. "Bill" Cope of West Lafayette, Ind., two daughters, Nancy Jane Campbell of Morton Ill., and Judith L. Harrell of Bluford, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a sister, Doris V. Gubser of Godfrey. Visitation was scheduled 4 to 8 p.m. at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham and 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. At the First Presbyterian Church of Jerseyville, visitation continued from 8:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of services at 10 a.m. The Revs. Russell Stark and Simon A. Simon officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the First Presbyterian Church of Effingham, where she was a member.

Aaron and Pauline (Voorhees) Cope's son - David Patterson Cope, 65, went to live with God at 2:46 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at Alton Memorial Hospital. A son of Aron and Pauline (Voorhees) Cope, he was born on May 20, 1941, in Alton. He and the former Sally Kendall were married on May 21, 1966, in Jerseyville. She survives. A professional piano and organ entertainer at the Stratford Hotel for many years, he was a music teacher in Alton, St. Louis, Grafton, Jerseyville and Calhoun. He served as choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville, First Presbyterian Church in Alton youth choir, and United Church of Christ in Godfrey Chancel choir director for 21 years. He was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, First Presbyterian Church in Alton, where he served as elder, Jerseyville Elks Club Lodge 954, Jerseyville Masonic Lodge 394, Jerseyville DeMolay, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music fraternity and Tau Kappa Epsilon, both at Millikin University in Decatur.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Jenny Lambie of Camp Zama, Japan, and her children, Erin Margaret, Joshua Bernard, Sally Ann, Kathryn James and Owen David; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sarah Cope of Jacksonville, Fla., and their children, Samuel Joseph and Elizabeth Clair; two sisters, Nancy Jane Campbell of Morton and Judy Foxall of Taylorville; and two brothers, James L. Cope of Washington, Pa., and William A. Cope of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Lurton of St. Louis, Judge of the United States Court of China in Shanghai for twenty-one years, died Friday morning, 21 Dec. at three thirty o'clock at St. John's hospital in St. Louis, where he had submitted to surgery two weeks ago. He resided at 5966 Enright in that city. Judge Lurton was a son of the late Henry C. and Olive Caroline Cope Lurton and was born in Jersey county on 1 Jan. 1883. He was aged seventy-three years, eleven months and twenty days.

Judge Lurton received his early education in Jersey county. After being admitted to the bar he practiced law in St. Louis for five years. At the end of that period he was appointed U.S. Commissioner to Shanghai in 1918 and held the office until his resignation in 1927. He was reappointed to the post in 1937 and at that time his wife and son, Nelson E. Lurton, Jr. were evacuated and came to St. Louis to reside. While in Shanghai he also served as Judge of the Consular Court. He was interned by the Japanese for a time and returned to the states from China on the exchange ship Gripsholm in August, 1942.

The former Jersey county resident had served on the Missouri State Workmen's Compensation Commission since 1945. Fraternally he was a member of the AF & AM Scottish Rites Bodies and Shrine. Judge Lurton was also Deputy Sovereign Commander of China for a number of years. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Lida Houghtlin Lurton of St. Louis, one Son, Nelson E. Lurton, Jr. of Shreveport, La.; one brother, William P. Lurton of Dow; and two sisters, Mrs. Lyle Garrison of St. Louis and Miss Metta Lurton of Los Angeles, California. A Masonic service was conducted at Alexander and Sons funeral chapel in St. Louis Sunday evening at eight o'clock. The body was brought to Jerseyville for interment in Oak Grove cemetery.

Lurton of Dow received word Wednesday morning of the death of his sister, Miss Metta E. Lurton of Los Angeles, California, which occurred at four o'clock that morning at the Christian Science Sanitarium in Pasadena, Calif. Where she had been for a week. Miss Lurton, a retired government employee had spent three weeks here this summer visiting relatives and had returned to her home about 10 Jul.

She was a daughter of the late Henry C. and Olive Cope Lurton and was born at Dow on 10 Aug. 1888. She had marked her seventy third birthday last Thursday. Miss Lurton was educated in the Jerseyville schools and for ten years was engaged in the teaching profession in Elsah, Jerseyville and Granite City. She entered the employ of the government and for many years held a position with the income tax division. Miss Lurton worked in Washington, DC about two years before being transferred to Chicago. In 1950 she was transferred from Chicago to Los Angeles where she was employed until her retirement about three years ago. Surviving her in addition to her brother of Dow are a sister, Mrs. ..rest of obituary is missing.
