He is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Laura Jane Mathews 3-14-1873 in Jersey County, IL. She died in 1909 at age 53. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. Charles and Laura (Mathews) Schaaf had 4 children-Henry Isom Schaaf, Leslie James Schaaf, Charles E. "Dick" Schaaf, and Adelia Schaaf.

He was the son of Charles and Laura Mathews Schaaf. (1a) Henry Isom and Adah (Young) Schaaf's daughter - Rosemary Schaaf, 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County. Born in Fieldon on July 30, 1929, she was the daughter of Isom Henry and Ada Charlotte (Young) Schaaf. A lifelong resident of Fieldon, she was employed at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville and the Fieldon Grade School. She then began operating the Farmers Market in Fieldon alongside Warren Fester. The two maintained a loving companionship for 30 years before his death on Dec. 25, 2002.
She is survived by her only surviving sister, Hazel Thompson of Kane; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her companion, Warren, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, Julius "Dude" and Fred Schaaf; and four sisters, Sophia Miller, Dorothy Mitchell, Alberta Evans and Lelia "Marge" Dilks. Visitation were held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the Rev. Randy Cartwright conducted funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial was at Fieldon Cemetery.

Her burial was at Mount Gilead Cemetery in Carrollton, Greene County, IL. Julius "Dude" Schaaf and Cora Alice Ford divorced and she remarried to Glenn G. Varble Dec. 18, 1975, in Alton. Children of Julius "Dude" Schaaf and Cora Alice Ford were-Judy Schaaf, Carol Schaaf, Russell Schaaf, Robert Schaaf, Kenneth W. "Bill" Schaaf, Charles Schaaf, Donald Schaaf, Jim Schaaf, and two children who died in infancy.

Julius "Dude" Schaaf's wife Cora Alice (Ford) Schaaf Varble's obituary - Cora Alice Schaaf Varble, 86, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Kane, the daughter of Louis and Nettie (Dunham) Ford. She married Julius "Dude" Schaaf of Fieldon and together they were the parents of 10 children before their eventual divorce. After the divorce, she operated a restaurant in Fieldon and was a nurse's aide at Garnet's Chateau. She met Glen G. Varble and the two later married on Dec. 18, 1975, in Alton. After their marriage, they moved to Pearl, where she began working at Brown Shoe Company and later as a nurse's aide at the Community Care Center, both in Pittsfield. Her husband's declining health forced her to retire and he passed away Jan. 15, 1994, after 18 happy years of a happy marriage.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Joe Roth of Fieldon and Carol and Jeff Barnett of Mount Sterling, Ill.; six sons and daughters-in-law, Russell Schaaf of Cottage Hills, Robert and Carolyn Schaaf and Kenneth W. "Bill" and Alice Schaaf, all of Jerseyville, Charles and Edna Schaaf, Donald and Barbara Schaaf, all of Fieldon, and Jim and Marcia Schaaf of Griggsville, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two brothers, William "Woody" Ford of Kane and Wilbert Ford of Springfield, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant children; a daughter-in-law, Marge Schaaf; three brothers, Henry, Ernest and Winslin Ford; and two sisters, Frances Wilson and Edna Pickett. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the Rev. Barbara Alley will conduct services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3. Burial will be at Mount Gilead Cemetery in Carrollton. Memorials may be given to the Fieldon United Church of Christ or to the Blessing Hospice of Greene County.

Cora Alice (Ford) Schaaf Varble's second husband Glenn G. Varble's obituary - Glenn G. Varble, 81, of Pearl died Saturday morning, Jan. 15 , 1994, at his residence. Born June 5, 1912, in Woodville, he was a son of Leonard and Tina Schudel Varble. He married Bernita M. Cummings Feb. 5, 1936. She died April 13, 1975. He later married Cora Alice Schaaf Dec. 18, 1975. She Survives.
He is also survived by two daughters, Carolyn Karben of Vancouver, Wash., and Glenda Gibbens of Eugene, Ore.; three sons, Adrian Varble of Eldred, Dale Varble of Reno, Nev.; two step-daughter, Carol Barnett of Mt. Sterling and Judy Roth of Fieldon, Bob Schaaf of Jerseyville, Charlie and Bill Schaaf, both of Fieldon and Jim Schaaf of Meredosia; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many stepgrandchildren; a sister, Edna Bailey of Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother, Delbert Varble of Alton. Mr Varble was a lifelong farmer in Greene and later Pike County. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to the Glenn Varble Memorial Fund in care of Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Cora Alice (Ford) Schaaf Varble's brother William W. "Woody" Ford's obituary - William W. "Woody" Ford, 89, died and went home to be with the Lord at 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Kane on Aug. 14, 1919, the son of the late Louis and Nettie (Dunham) Ford. He married the former Wilma Jean "Jeanie" Strebel on Aug. 25, 1956, in Mississippi and they shared 34 years together before her death on March 30, 1991. He later married the former Shirley Franklin on Sept. 8, 2005, in Pittsfield. She survives. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a truck driver for Gorma Brothers Ready Mix in Jerseyville for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and his wife, Wilbert Gene and Dea Ford of Jerseyville; three stepchildren and their spouses, Sherrie and Paul Edgell of Kane, Terry and Paula Gust of Edwardsville and Michele Morris of Kane; several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; and a brother, Wilbert Ford of Springfield, Ill. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Frances Wilson, Alice Schaaf Varble, Edna Pickett Gilbert and a twin sister in infancy; three brothers, Earnest, Henry and Winslin Ford; and a stepson, Gerald Gust. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until services at noon Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Martin Smay will officiate. Burial will be at Kane Cemetery with Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites. Memorials may be made to the cemetery or the Open Door House of Praise in Jerseyville.

(3a) Henry Isom and Adah (Young) Schaaf's daughter - Hazel (Schaaf) Thompson, 88, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Jersey County, she was one of nine children of Isom and Ada C. (Young) Schaaf. She married Russell Thompson on Nov. 6, 1943, and the two lived in Kane for many years, where he was employed on the Kane Croft Farm. They shared 61 years together before his death on Dec. 15, 2004. Coming from a large, close-knit family, she learned early on what hard work, dedication and loyalty to family meant. She was employed as a cook for many years at Hanks Cafe in Kane and later became a cook at the Kane Grade School for 16 years before retiring.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Jean Johnson of Alton and Verna Kay and Perry Ontis of Fieldon; a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Doris Thompson of Fieldon; a stepson, Russell Edward Thompson of Wood River; and numerous grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Edna Marie Farris, in December 1968; three grandsons, Carl Russell Johnson, Billy Joe Farris and Michael Farris; two great-grandsons, Scott Johnson and Matthew Crull; three brothers, Fred, Julius "Dude" and Henry Schaaf; and five sisters, Sophia Miller, Lelia Dilks, Alberta Evans, Dorothy Mitchell and Rosemary Schaaf. Hazel Schaaf was born 9-20-1918 in Jersey County, IL. She died 2-6-2007 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville, IL. Her burial was at Kane Cemetery in Jersey County, IL. She first married James D. Maple 3-22-1936. She later married Russell Oliver Thompson 11-6-1943. Her husband - Russell Oliver Thompson, 85, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Jersey County, one of 11 children of Logan and Viola (Bowers) Thompson. He married the former Hazel Schaaf on Nov. 6, 1943, in Jerseyville. She survives. A resident of Kane for many years, he was employed at the Kane Croft Farm for 21 years until the farm was sold and then began working as a mechanic and driver for Krause and Son Implement Co. in Jerseyville, retiring in 1982, after dedicating 15 years to the business. He was a member of the Jerseyville Moose Lodge 695 and enjoyed their many activities and meals that he and his wife were able to take part in and was especially proud of his yard and garden.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Russell Edward Thompson of Wood River and Raymond and Doris Thompson of Fieldon; a daughter and son-in-law, Verna Kay and Perry Ontis of Fieldon; a stepdaughter, Shirley Jean Johnson of Roxana; four grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-great- grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Brown of California and Cecile Russell of Godfrey; and two brothers, Herman "Pete" Thompson of Tacoma, Wash., and Donald Thompson of Granite City. Preceding him in death were his parents; a stepdaughter, Edna Mae Farris; three stepgrandchildren, Carl Russell Johnson, Billy Joe Farris and Michael Farris; a sister, Hazel Mae Thompson; and five brothers, Raymond, James, Logan Jr., Charles William and Truman Thompson. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the Rev. Jon Lobos conducted funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial was at Kane Cemetery. (4a) Henry Isom and Adah (Young) Schaaf's daughter Lelia Margie Schaaf was born in Jersey County, IL. She is deceased. She married Owen Leroy Dilks 1-24-1948 in Jersey County, IL. Her husband Owen Leroy Dilks - Died 06-23-1980. Owen Leroy Dilks, 56, of Jerseyville died June 23, at Jersey Community hospital. Services were conducted at Healing Waters Temple by Rev Gordon Dean Cox. Burial was in Fieldon cemetery. He was a retired logger, born January 13, 1924 in Rosedale, a son of the late Jessie &I Mattie (Evans) Dilks and was a WWII army veteran.
His survivors are his wife, Lelia Margie (Schaaf) Dilks; 5 sons, Ronald, Rodney, Randy, Kevin and Billy Jo, all of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Connie Lott of Jerseyville; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers, John and Alvin Dilks of Jerseyville and 2 sisters, Uldine Humiston, Jerseyville and Mildred Short, Warrenton, Missouri. Graveside service was held by American Legion post. Memorials may be given to Cancer Soc.

(5a) Henry Isom and Adah (Young) Schaaf's daughter - Dorothy (Schaaf) Mitchell, 79, died Monday, September 23, 1991, at her daughter's home in winchester. Born on July 29, 1912, in Fieldon, she was a daughter of the Late Isom and Ada (Young) Schaaf. She married Charles Mitchell on February 15, 1931 in Jerseyville. He died December 27, 1974.
Surviving are five sons, Charles Mitchell of Alsey, L. C. Mitchell of Virginia Illinois, George Mitchell of Silvis and Thomas and Clyde Mitchell, both of Murrayville; a daughter, Reba Witwer of Sinchester; 16 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Schaaf of Jerseyville; and four sisters, Rosemary Schaaf of Fieldon, Hazel Thompson of Kane and Sophia Miller and Margie Dilks, both of Jerseyville. Two brothers, Henry and Julius Schaaf, and a sister, Alberta Evans, preceded her in death.
Visitation was from 1:30 to 9 pm Wednesday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, where services were at 11 am Thursday. The Rev. Phillip Dunn officiated. Burial was in Murrayville cemetery.

(6a) Henry Isom and Adah (Young) Schaaf's daughter - Alberta M. (Schaaf) Evans, 63, died at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug 14, 1987 at St Anthony's Hospital in Alton. She was born in Fieldon, a daughter of the late Isom and Adah Young Schaaf. On Dec 8, 1945 in Jerseyville she married Ward Evans and he survives.
Also surviving are a son David Evans of Jerseyville; two grandchildren; a brother, Charles Schaaf of Jerseyville and five sisters Sophia Miller and Margie Dilks of Jerseyville, Dorothy Mitchell of Winchester, Hazel Thompson of Kane and Rosemary Schaaf of Fieldon. Services were conducted at 10 a.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Hone in Jerseyville. The Rev. Jean Erb officiated. Burial was in Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

Final rites for Roy U. Miller, 76, of 109 Lincoln, Jerseyville were conducted at 10 o'clock June 12, at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Todd officiating. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 7:55 am on June 10 at Jersey Community Hospital. Interment was in the Fieldon cemetery. A carpenter, he was born September 12, 1898 in Harrisburg, and was a World War II veteran. Miller was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sophia Schaaf Miller; and a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Doris) Dickerson of East Alton; one grandchild.

Their other children, William C. Schaaf, Agnes (Schaaf) Isringhausen, Frank Schaaf, and Walter L. Schaaf are deceased.

Schaaf, 88, died at 12:44 a.m. Monday, July 2, 2007, at Willow Rose Rehabilitation and Health Care in Jerseyville. She was born in Grafton on Nov. 21, 1918, one of nine children born to the late Harry and Alma (Suddeth) Legate. She married William C. Schaaf on Dec. 2, 1936, in Jerseyville, and the two farmed for many years before moving into Jerseyville in 1961. She then began working at several restaurants, including Walkers Five and Dime and Sav-Mor. The couple shared nearly 57 years together before his death on July 13, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Edgar Short and Joann and Paul Cunningham, all of Jerseyville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Martin and Cathy Short, Terry and Carolyn Short and Cynthia Stamper, all of Jerseyville; great-grandchildren, Eric, Zachary, Travis and Faith Short and Corey and Codey Stamper; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was an infant son; a granddaughter, Denise Cunningham; a grandson-in-law, Avery "Curt" Stamper; and eight siblings. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Doug Haynes will officiate. Burial will be at Fieldon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Jerseyville.

(2aa) William and Cora (Legate) Schaaf's daughter Joann B. Schaaf married Paul M. Cunningham 9-19-1959. Paul and Joann (Schaaf) Cunningham's daughter Denise Lavonne Cunningham died -04-1971 - Denise Lavonne Cunningham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maurice Cunningham of 107 Circle Drive, Jerseyville, died at seven-twenty o'clock Thursday morning at Children's Hospital in St. Louis. Her death occurred on her ninth birthday anniversary. Denise was stricken with leukemia at the age of three and one-half years and for the past few years she has been hospitalized on several occasions. When her health permitted she attended Holy Ghost parochial school and despite her frailty she was present, in a wheelchair, for the ground breaking of the new Holy Ghost Church last fall.
The Mass of the Angels was read for the funeral of Denise at her parish church Monday morning at nine-thirty o'clock with Father Robert Heintz, celebrant. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation hours were held on Saturday evening and Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited at eight o'clock Sunday night. In addition to her parents, Denise is survived by one sister, Cynthia Yvonne; her maternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. William C. Schaaf of Jerseyville and her great grandparents, Mrs. Ruth Schaaf of Jerseyville and Mrs. and Mrs. Harry M. Legate of East Alton.

(2a) Leslie and Ruth (Levi) Schaaf's daughter Agnes Schaaf (deceased) married Floyd G. Isringhausen 11-16-1941. She was born 11-15-1923, and died 6-17-1943 in childbirth. Floyd and Agnes (Schaaf) Isringhausen's son Floyd Gilbert Isringhausen died in childbirth 6-17-1943. Agnes and her son are both buried in Fieldon Cemetery. Floyd G. Isringhausen later married the former Virginia Winchell on Dec. 23, 1944, in Fieldon. Floyd and Virginia (Winchell) Isringhausen raised five children, Judy Isringhausen, Susan Isringhausen, Roger Isringhausen, Gary Isringhausen, and Bruce Isringhausen, and shared 36 years together before she died Feb. 4, 1981. He later married the former Mary Jane Mountain on Sept. 5, 1981, in Jerseyville. Floyd G. Isringhausen was born in Fieldon March 13, 1922, one of eight children born to the late Louis and Florence (Claflin) Isringhausen. He died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. His burial was at Fieldon Cemetery. He was a grandson of William and Emma (Seehausen) Isringhausen.

The obituary of Floyd G. Isringhausen - Floyd G. Isringhausen, 86, died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a period of declining health. He was born in Fieldon March 13, 1922, one of eight children born to the late Louis and Florence (Claflin) Isringhausen. He married the former Agnes Schaaf and they were married for a short time before she died in childbirth, along with their only child, Floyd Jr. He later married the former Virginia Winchell on Dec. 23, 1944, in Fieldon. They raised five children and shared 36 years together before she died Feb. 4, 1981. He married the former Mary Jane Mountain on Sept. 5, 1981, in Jerseyville and they have been blessed with 27 years together. He was a Jersey County resident his entire life, working in agriculture. He operated a livestock and grain farm near Fieldon for many years. Active in his community, he was a member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ, the Elks Lodge 954 and Moose Lodge, both of Jerseyville, and the Fieldon Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife, surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Judy and Ted Kuebrich and Susan Isringhausen, all of Jerseyville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger and Linda and Gary Isringhausen, all of Fieldon, and Bruce Isringhausen of Godfrey; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Skinner of Jerseyville. Besides his parents, wives and son, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Kuebrich, on Feb. 11, 2004, a sister, Hazel Gettings, and five brothers, Marvin, Clyde, Wayne, Pearl and Glenn Isringhausen. Visitation was Friday, Dec. 26, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, and will continue from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Fieldon United Church of Christ. The Rev. (Bushnell) Schaaf, 72, died at 5:41 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at her home. A daughter of Olin and Clover Wilma (Camerer) Bushnell, she was born May 19, 1935, in Eldred. On Dec. 24, 1951, she and Leo K. "Pete" Schaaf were united in marriage in Carrollton. He survives. A homemaker, she was a member of Eastern Star for 47 years and a member of Bunker Hill Eastern Star Chapter 465 since Dec. 3, 1994. She was initiated into Calhoun Chapter 990 on Jan. 7, 1960. She was a worthy matron for the years of 1967, 1973, 1976, 1985, 1998, 2004 and 2005.

(1aa) Lester and Stella (Schaaf) Driver's son Thomas Rodney Driver's obituary - Thomas Rodney Driver, 73, died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Jersey Community Hospital after a brief battle with acute leukemia. He was born near Fieldon Feb. 6, 1935, the son of Lester and Stella (Schaaf) Driver, now deceased. He married the former May Lou Woolsey Dec. 3, 1955, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville, and together they shared 53 years together and shared the joys and responsibilities that came with their family of three children. For many years he was employed as a foreman at the Grafton Boat Works, and then later began working at the Tri County FS as an LP delivery/salesman, retiring in December 2008 due to his declining health.
Surviving are his wife, May Lou Woolsey of Jerseyville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Rodney and Anita Driver and Darel Driver, all of Jerseyville; four grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Chris Wilfong, Brandon and Shannon Dunham, Travis Driver, Samantha and Alex Poppe, all of Jerseyville; four great-grandchildren, Blake and Dylan Wilfong and Anna and Clayton Poppe, and one due in July; two brothers, Robert Driver of Delhi and Elmer "Sam" Driver of Jerseyville; and one sister, Nilda "Sis" Evans of Barnhart, Mo. He was preceded in death by his only daughter, Victoria "Vicky" Dunham, Jan. 23, 1995, and one brother, Charles "Shorty" Driver. (1a) Fred and Adelia (Schaaf) Young's daughter - Hazel Mildred (Young) Woolsey, 84, formerly of Kane, died at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for several years. The last surviving child of the late Fred and Adelia (Schaaf) Young, she was born in Rosedale Township in Jersey County on Feb. 20, 1918. On March 2, 1936, she married Phillip Woolsey in Jersey County. He died Aug. 25, 1980, while they were living in California.
During World War II, she was employed at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville, and the Western Corporation in East Alton. Before she retired, she worked with her sister, Lucille, at Town & Country Dry Cleaners in Jerseyville. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Gary and Sue Wade of Jerseyville, and their children and grandchildren, Terri and Darren Howland and daughter Kelsey; Sheryl and Don Simpson, and their daughter, Ashley Jones; and Debbie and Mike Bader, all of Jerseyville.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Tony, Fred, Carl and Robert Young; and four sisters, Leona Bell, Marguerite Lewis, Roberta "Bettie" Collins and Lucille Wade. (1a) Fred and Adelia (Schaaf) Young's son - Robert Elvin "Bob" Young, 80, went to be with the Lord 1719 7:18 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County with his children and their spouses at his side. He was born in Jersey County on Sept. 10, 1922, to Fred and Adelia (Schaaf) Young. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and returned home, where he worked as an overhead crane operator for Olin Corp. in East Alton for 37 years before retiring. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, where he served as an ordained deacon during his lifetime. He was also a member of the Jerseyville American Legion, Moose Lodge 695, Olin Westerner Club, Tri County Antique Club and a lifetime member of the Boilermakers Union 483.
He married the former Edith "Edie" Schaff on Sept. 10, 1947, at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, and they shared 51 years of marriage before her sudden passing Jan. 22, 1999. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert A. and Nancy Young of Jerseyville, Richard and Mickey Young of Godfrey and Tim and Tiffany Young of Jerseyville; three daughters, Carol Young, Barb Woelfel and Sara Eberlin, all of Jerseyville; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Jason Steele, Suzie and Tim Sandifer, Beth Young, Carisa and Chas Peuterbaugh, Kristin and Chris Young, Marion Hanson, Elizabeth Woelfel, Dian Young, Cale Young, Laura Eberlin and Taylor Young; two great-grandchildren, Ariana Lillard and Claire Steele; and one sister, Hazel Woolsey of Jerseyville.

She was born on Aug. 12, 1922, in Carlinville, one of three children of Lawrence P. and Freda M. (Cochran) Schaaf. She graduated in 1941 from Carlinville High School and married Charles William Witt on Nov. 27, 1946, in Carlinville. They lived in Jerseyville for a time and while there she was employed as the office manager at Jersey County Farm Supply. They later returned to Carlinville, where they resided for nearly 35 years before moving to the Alton area in 1999. While in Carlinville, she was employed in the office of Konneker-Brown Implement Company and later enjoyed her free time traveling, pursuing the perfect bargain at yard sales and going to the Alton Belle. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Richard Wakeford of Alton and Cheryl and Larry Strohbeck of Brighton; a daughter-in-law, Ann Witt Huff of Santa Anna, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, William Broadwater of Granite City. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 28, 2001; a son, Dennis Witt on Aug. 25, 2000; an infant grandson, Jason Witt in 1974; a granddaughter, Carrie Bissett in 2002; her parents; a brother, Ernest Schaaf; and an infant sister, Minnie Mary Ellen Schaaf. Betty (Schaaf) Witt's husband - Charles Witt, 81, died at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Born on the family farm in Polk Township, Macoupin County, just north of Plainview, on Jan. 28, 1920, he was a son of the late William and Opal (Parnell) Witt. After graduating from Carlinville High School in 1939, he entered the United States Navy during peacetime and served in the Pacific Ocean aboard four different submarines during World War II. Throughout his service he served on 13 war patrols and was honorably discharged as a chief petty officer and chief electrician. Upon his discharge he returned home and married the former Betty Gene Schaaf on Nov. 27, 1946 in Carlinville. She survives. A lifetime employee of MJM Electric Cooperative Inc., he began as a lineman in the Jersey County area from 1945 to 1962. Then he and his family relocated to Carlinville, where he was promoted as the companies coop general manager, a position he held for 33 years until retiring in 1985. After retiring he and his wife continued to live in Carlinville until a few years ago when they moved to their current home, where Witt continued to perfect his love of gardening. He was a 50 year member of the Plainview Masonic Lodge, a member of Jerseyville American Legion, where he was a past commander, the Carlinville American Legion, Carlinville Rotary, Illinois-Missouri World War II Submarine Veterans, Foster Township Senior Citizens and the United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters and two sons-in-law, Dawn and Richard Wakeford of Camdenton, Mo. and Cheryl and Larry Strohbeck of Brighton; a daughter-in-law, Ann Witt Huff; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert Witt of Plainview; a sister, Helen Komick of Bunker Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his son, Dennis Lawrence Witt on Aug. 25, 2000 and two brothers, Leonard and Alfred Witt. She is survived by her husband, Emil Ohley whom she married 29 July 1944 in Jerseyville; one daughter, Alsia Metz of Alton; two grandchildren; one Brother, John Schaaf of Escondido, California. Sigel A. Schaaf
Sigel Schaaf, and enterprising young farmer of English township, is a son of Louis and Christina (Youngblood) Schaaf, natives of Germany. Sigel Schaaf was born on the 25th day of Oct. 1863 in Jersey county, Ill., and was here reared on a farm, obtaining his education in the district schools. He resided with his parents until March 28, 1885, when he was united in marriage with Sophia Harding, daughter of Michael and Mary H. Harding. Mr. Schaaf cultivates about 100 acres of land and is an intelligent and worthy citizen.

Sigel A. Schaaf married Sophia Harding 3-24-1885 in Jersey County, IL. She died in 1964 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. Sigel and Sophia (Harding) Schaaf had 4 children-Estelle S. Schaaf, Carrie Schaaf, Anna Schaaf, and Charles L. Schaaf.
(1) Sigel and Sophia (Harding) Schaaf's daughter Estelle S. (Schaaf) Vinnedge died 11-05-1981 - Funeral services were held for Estelle S. Vinnedge November 5, 1981 at the Arm Bruster Funeral Home in St. Louis. Mrs. Vinnedge died following a fall at her home that caused a broken hip. She was hospitalized for several weeks and had been moved to the Chastains Nursing Home where her Sister, Carey Brock, is a resident.
She was born in Fieldon in 1892, the daughter of Sigel and Sophia Schaaf. She went to school in Grafton and later worked in St. Louis as a milliner. In 1923, she married Charles A. Vinnedge who was secretary of the Terminal Railroad Association. Her parents, husband, sister, Anna Bienvenue, and brother Charles L. Schaaf, preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 sister, 2 nieces, a nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews.
(2) Sigel and Sophia (Harding) Schaaf's daughter Carrie Schaaf's husband Russell Brock, died 06-10-1919. Russell Brock, was killed in action. Son of Justin Brock of Elsah, his eldest son. He leaves his wife, who was Mill Carrie Schaaf, formerly of Grafton. Before entering service he lived in St. Louis.
(3) Sigel and Sophia (Harding) Schaaf's daughter Anna Schaaf married a man who's last name was Bienvenue. I don't have any other information about her or her family.
(4) Sigel and Sophia (Harding) Schaaf had a son Charles L. Schaaf. I don't have any information about their son Charles L. Schaaf.
