Just a few miles North Baton Rouge is the Port Hudson battle field where  once a year the Civil War Battle of Port Hudson is reenacted . This noisy celebration happens right out there on Highway 61.

Contrary to popular belief the Civil War was not just fought to free the slaves. Although I am not proud of the South's role in slavery, The institution of slavery did not start in the South, nor did it end here.

Slavery started in Biblical times or even well before that. The English and other countries including Africa were dealing in slavery  before cotton was king in Dixie. The American Civil   War was fought for the  cotton economy and the coming of the industrial revolution. The same holds true for World War II  and other battles that were fought for oil. Check out a book called the Seven Sisters.
