Foghorn Leghorn is the oldest chicken resident here and probably the luckiest! I have given him "Most Favored Chicken "status, because he is a survivor. When he was very young I got him from the local "Chicken Man" and was told he was a hen. I was mighty surprised when he started crowing! Not being a country girl, I had no idea about his breed and just thought he was really pretty.
Well, one day while Foghorn was in Dreamer's stall, Dreamer got mad at me for not letting him out so he stepped on Forhorn's leg, breaking it. I had no idea what to do so I called the local Vet and he told me to wring his neck.....I cant do that! YUCK! So instead I took some roll-a-plaster and made him a little cast. Then I brought him into the house and turned my laundry room into a "Chicken ICU" . After about 3 weeks I cut his little cast off and his leg was mended...problem was the cast was so heavy that now his leg was twisted. But, Foghorn learned to adjust, and although he walks with a limp, he's still walking.
Another time Foghorn got chased behind a 90 gallon stock tank we have in the barn and he could'nt get out.I thought some critter had gotten ahold of him, and wrote him off as someones lunch. About 5 days after I realized he was missing I happened to move the stock tank and found him. Thirsty, hungry and really hot, but very much alive. It took him about a week, but he recovered fully.
Just recently, I noticed that Foghorns left eye was all puffy and goopy....upon closer inspection I noticed that someone had pecked it out. My favorite rooster had been given an eye-ectomy! But you know what? He can still see out of the other one. Foghorn lives in the barn, nesting on a warm pile of hay. He gets all the corn and water he wants, and lots of attention.
Buffy is one of our 3 Araucana Roosters. Araucana Chickens are from South America, and they are nicknamed the "Easter Egg Chickens" because they lay pastel colored eggs. The chickens all have a nice even temperment, and none of the roosters are agressive towards people.
