TREGILLGAS SURNAME ORIGIN

The original spelling of this surname was TregilgasHowever, when my grandfather was born in 1866 in Ennis Barton, St Enoder, Cornwall, his name was recorded on his birth certificate as Thomas Henry Tregillgas.

Thomas Henry Tregillgas emigrated from Cornwall to Australia in 1889 when he was 23 years of age and founded a family whose direct living descendants in October 1999 numbered 31 persons.

THE TREGILLGAS FAMILY

I would like to acknowledge and thank my fifth cousin, Loraine Bessant, who lives in England and who, with her husband Roger, has done a tremendous amount of research into the history of the Tregilgas family, tracing our origins back to John Tregilgas born circa 1480.

Two brothers of my great great grandfather, William Tregilgas (born 1808), settled in South Australia in the mid 19th Century.  They were Joseph Tregilgas (born 1811) and Richard Tregilgas (born 1818).  Joseph Percival (Perc) Tregilgas of Balhannah, South Australia, has compiled a family tree on the descendants of these two brothers.  I have partly transcribed the chart done by Perc and this table can be accessed through a link on the Tregillgas/Tregilgas Family Tree page.

It seems likely that Thomas Henry Tregillgas was not aware of his South Australian relatives since both of his great uncles had left Cornwall many years before he was born.  His great uncle Richard (died1892) arrived in South Australia in 1850 and his great uncle Joseph (died 1859) arrived in South Australia in 1847.
