Storms

The skyline here is so much different than it was anywhere else that I have lived. It seems so much closer to the ground! Sometimes, I feel like I could just reach up and touch the clouds!

We have a rainy season, that lasts approximately three months of the year, it begins in mid summer. During this season, we get rain at the same time every day and it lasts anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Each day, we get 3"-5" of rain. Luckily, the ground here is sand and it soaks up the water pretty quick. After the rains, the skies are beautiful, all different colors in the clouds, rainbows all over the place, no other sky as beautiful as a stormy sunset. During the storms, the lightening is many times louder than the thunder... can you hear it? (sounds last load on this page)

Spring, brings the most beautiful lightening storms each night. They start around 10 or 11 p.m. and they last throughout the night, into early morning hours. These storms light up the clouds in many colors, such as red, blue, yellow, pink, purple and white. It is a beautiful sight to see. I have spent many nights, watching out the window in amazement at the wonderous beauty and silence of it.

Winter, does not bring many storms. We have tropical weather here and most of the winter is balmy and in the mid 70's and mid 80's with a breeze coming in off the Gulf of Mexico. Much better than the COLD snow!

Of course, we also have Hurricane Season! I have never been in a hurricane yet, however a few months ago, Hurricane Georges was in the Gulf and headed our way. The preparations were under way, the stores were emptied in a hurry of all canned foods, bottled water, paper products, first aid and camping items. Luckily for us the hurricane turned, unlucky for texas and louisiana however. Florida takes hurricane warnings very serious, as you can imagine as there is water on three sides of the state. It is a scary and very real danger here, but the rest of the time, because it is such a beautiful state, the dangers are forgotten.
