Amphibians

The most abundant of the amphibians here are lizards! They come in many colors, black, brown, green, red, yellow. Many of them change colors. Some of them have stripes on their sides or backs, some have spots and others have horns or spikes on their heads! These look like they must have evolved from the dinosaurs. One type of the colored lizards are called geckos. All of the lizards here are small in size. They range from 1/2" to 6". They are really pretty cute.

The one thing that I have noticed that all of the lizards have in common is the way they attract attention when looking for a mate. They have a sac on their neck and when they are trying to be noticed, the sac fills with air and blows up and then empties. So the sac looks like a balloon blowing up and being deflated over and over on the neck. The sac turns a scarlet red or a brilliant orange while inflated. It is a spectacular sight.

Of course, everyone knows that Florida is known for alligators and crocodiles. We do not have any near or around our yard, however, they are all around town. Our yard is on a salt water canal, and from what I understand, the gators much prefer the fresh water canals and the rivers over the salt water.
