Birds...

The wildlife in Florida is very abundant. One example of this, is the birds. We get lots of them in our back yard! You walk outside into a virtual wildlife heaven. Do you hear the seagulls? (once page is loaded, you will!)

One of the neatest birds to see down here, is a diving bird, called an Anghina. He dives under water and swims around to get his fish. He can stay under water longer than I ever could! When he has had his fill, he gets out of the water and stands with his wings spread wide to dry them off. He stays completely still like that until all his feathers are dry, so then he is able to fly to the next water spot he feels like diving into.

Another funny bird is the sandpiper, they walk along the sand sticking that long beak into the sand and eat fiddler crabs and whatever else they find down there. They are a funny sight to see. Most of all, though, I like the fact that we have so many types of birds in our own back yard.

At supper time, we can go outside and whistle or wave and we will get flooded with seagulls! They love to receive bread, french fries, potato chips, crackers and just about any other bread or potato product you can think of. Although they are not crazy about cornbread!

We also get egrets, which are a medium sized bird, say 3-5 pounds. They are snow white, with yellow heads. Their feathers look very fluffy like a mixture of cotton and goose down. They don't mingle with us much. The pelicans are a picky bunch. They want fish, shrimp and very rarely will take an offering of bread. We also get a large bird called a heron. They stand approximately three feet tall. There are several species of them around here, I don't know the names, but some are white, some are gray, some are a blue gray and the others are gray / white. They are shy, but are willing to come take food from you if you have shrimp, fish or some other delicacy. They won't waste their time with you for anything less. To them, the shrimp are an appetizer, they want bigger and better, or get bored and leave.

Of course we also get regular every day birds in our yard also. The bluejays, cardinals, robin, sparrow, crows, terns (also known as sea hawks, and an occasional owl or eagle will swoop in for a visit.

Needless to say, we wake up to a morning full of bird songs in our ears. It really does sound quite pretty with all the different songs going at once.
